Hi everyone,
I've been caring for my parent for about two years now, and one of the biggest surprises was how much mental energy goes into just keeping track of things—appointments, medications, which doctor said what, where records are, coordinating with my siblings.
I started with a simple spreadsheet and it honestly changed everything. I organized by:
Provider/specialist contact info and last visit
Current medications with dosages and refills
Upcoming appointments and deadlines
Key medical history (surgeries, allergies, major diagnoses)
Insurance and coverage details
Having this in one place meant I could stop using my brain as a filing system. I could actually focus on being present instead of trying to remember if my parent had a follow-up with cardiology or which pills interact with which.
I've also found that having this organized makes conversations with my siblings SO much easier. They can actually help because they know what's going on.
I know other people use different systems—some use apps, some keep paper files, some do both. But the core principle is the same: get it out of your head, get it organized, share it where appropriate.
If anyone's struggling with this, you're not alone. It gets better once you establish a system.
