Hey folks, welcome to the new whine/general topic thread. Feel free to use this thread to discuss anything that is on your mind. Caregiving- related stuff, life after a loved one's death, your own emotional wellbeing. Whatever..........anything on your mind.
So I've broken the 4th and 5th metatarsal bones on my left foot. No surgery required! Thank you God! I need to get a fracture boot. I could have got one from them but they only have the ones that come up to your knee and they want $150.00 for them. So we are going to pick one up from a Shopper's Home & Health store or somewhere like that.
She said it should take 4 to 6 week to recover fully. Meanwhile I'm hobbling around on my crutches. CWillie, I hear ya about hating the crutches. I hate them. I do better just limping around without them. Although today I needed them when we went out. In the pouring rain with my summer thong sandals on cause they are the only shoe I can get my foot in comfortably right now. It's slow going on them that's for sure. Only a few days of it and DH or in this case GH (grumpy hubs) is getting impatient.
Anyway, no matter how it happened it sucks!
Today, the orthopedic dr. Same thing. Didn't look at my foot or touch it. It's a nice shade of purple and green now and still slightly swollen but it's not contaminated. Yeah, I know. There's nothing to do with broken metatarsals but really?
'2 fractured metatarsals here. Next!'
But toes are attached to a living PERSON & breaking bones (even if smaller ones) is a big deal in a person's world.
Gershun, well tea & sympathy HERE 🤗
Once your swelling reduces, hopefully the boot will mean getting around is easier. Take care with the crutches! Dangeling from crutches (if armpit type) can damage armpit nerves - avoid. Mind how your use your shoulders (forearm type). Not up at your ears? Also, take care when placing the crutches down. Met a lady that tripped on her fallen crutches (used for ankle sprain) & broke her elbow!! Don't do that.
I'll keep in mind all you said. Thx!
There was a guy in the bed next to me who was having a cyst drained. "Draining a cyst here!" ''
"Okay, impacted bowel, bed ten"
"Got it!................hey, could you get me a pumpkin spice when you go to Starbucks!"
"Yep, no prob........just need to deal with the meth addict in bed two'
Yes, factory medicine at it's finest. ;)
I have to say though that my beat up toes were a bit more glamorous and caused by kicking sand roses that are by my bedroom door.😊😊
Although I did get an earful when I was waiting there for the doc. The nurses were discussing quite loudly some patients and their experiences. I couldn't help wondering what they might have said about me after I left. I understand for them it might be stress relief and I get that but keeping their voices down would probably serve them better in the future. JMHO
I wish I could have said it was a snowboarding accident or it happened when I landed skydiving. A lot more glamorous.
If you haven't been cautioned against weight bearing then I think I'd ditch the crutches unless doing without hurts.
But that was back in my child care days and SIL was starting back to work after mat leave so I had to figure out how to care for a baby (only 6 months mat leave then) and a two year old as well as managing sister's household, all with limited ability to carry things. I threw stuff a lot 🤣.
I never appreciated how good I had it.
Note to self: Self, don't fall again.
Amazon boot: $29 - $49, then up from there.
It happens. The best way not to fall again is:
Discover the real reason.
Slow way down, no, slow way way down.
The automatic things we could usually do without thinking about how (like tying our shoes), later require thought and attention.
There was nothing there when I tripped and fell, breaking my fibula tip. (broken ankle).
A week later, my collarbone hurt-it was a broken collarbone.
I was in too much of a rush that time.
Slowed way way down after the second fall, with the second broken ankle
2013 ad 2015 if I recall correctly.
It really hurts! Not ever worth going through that again.
