Daisy ,

Are you using different soap than usual when you travel ? There is also ph balanced liquid soap just for the private areas you could try . There are also women’s wipes for private areas .
Maybe after the long airplane trip change underwear asap? And like already said change undies twice a day ?
I’m not quite sure what travel has to do with it except maybe the sitting a long time ( sweating 🤷‍♀️) .

Travellers are probably drinking less because of the disruption to their routines and also to avoid needing to use restrooms in strange places.

My mother’s definition of travel was having to use strange bathrooms , so she avoided travel as much as she could .

Can’t really avoid strange bathrooms during travel .

I drink a lot the last few days before day of a long airplane trip . Then after landing stay hydrated during trip .

Beatty, when you are clear of symptoms, please consider using the d-Mannose supplement that Alva initially recommended a few years ago. My MIL in LTC was getting UTIs literally every other month. Once I supplied the staff with the supplement and instructed them on a dosage, it cut down her UTIs by at least 50% or more. You may know I don't have any love for the big, greedy, unregulated, unaccountable supplement industry but d-Mannose was a very low (or no-) health or medical risk experiment and the results spoke itself. I got them on amazon.com I was in Greece this last October and it was still somewhat hot there. Since I struggle with bladder incontinence, the lack of public bathrooms in some parts of Europe is a real problem. I already don't like to drink water and when I came home from that trip I found out my kidney function had taken a hit. We need to drink enough water. Says easy but does hard.

I think on top of a lot of the normal reasons for UTIs, I think the stress from traveling, and drinking more sugary drinks, than usual when your traveling, didn't help me.

A few more ideas:
Apologies to the modest women who find this is a sensitive topic. I know I do, but it is necessary to speak up. Those not having many Uti's may not understand the vigilant care necessary for prevention once UTI's become a problem and more frequent.

Even at home, one could over-clean, over-use toilet paper, and ruin the normal pH.
I read we should be using toilet paper wiping only twice. Front to back.
You can use a sitz bath (portable sits on toilet/Amazon) to clean in between showers.
It is partially a hygiene issue, not showering enough, but it could be caused by over-cleansing. Not thoroughly drying when you are in a hurry. (when traveling, you are in a hurry.) After showering, you can use a hair dryer to gently dry in all the folds.

Wearing cotton underwear is recommended, or at least a cotton crotch.
Do not wear undies too tight. It is recommended that sometimes sleeping without underwear allows the air to circulate.

Maybe take your own toilet paper for use in public restrooms. Who knows what is in that toilet paper, and where it has rolled? On the floor? And, sometimes, there is no toilet paper.

And, never be the woman who says I am not drinking anything because I will need to pee. Drink, add electrolytes to prevent dehydration.

Driving Daisy is right about sugary drinks not being beneficial. Always finish the entire course of antibiotic. Be prepared to get diagnosed with a yeast infection after the antibiotic and treat it.

Hope this was helpful. Everyone's comments have also helped me.

About 40-50 years ago I had a UTI. None since. Mother as the same and we both stay/stayed very hydrated. It's a nuisance having to visit the washroom often but better, I think, than having a UTI. I avoid sugary drinks alltogether and keep the caffeine very low. I don't care for straight water but diluted electrolyte drinks work well for me. On a trip I will limit fluids but the rest of the time not. Haven't had an antibiotic in over 15 years for any reason.

It's a long weekend in Canada and our unofficial kick to to summer. We've gone from sweltering with unseasonably high temperatures last week to 13°C (55°F) today, but when I was checking the beach camera in my near-by resort town I saw several people are out there by the lake determined to have summer 🥶🤣

Not great upstate either, temps in the sevenths, but I'm thinking we should by a boat, rain , rain and more rain, and then more rain. There is nice times, most days we get breaks but the rivers and streams are getting dangerously high for some.

I heard my Vermont neighbors have had some bad flooding in places

We need some of that rain here. it's dry, and windy and the farmers are seeding . Nonetheless the field outside is starting to show a little colour. Yay!

Temps are very moderate and cool at night. We had a few warm days last week. Summer is coming! Here we can have the odd snowstorm in May.

This is totally not a caregiving related question but my Bissell Pet Pro mini vacuum just went down for the dirt nap. Get it.......dirt nap. Har de har har.

Anyway............does anyone have any recommendations for another brand. This one worked good when it worked but had constant charging cord issues. I'm looking for one mostly for my couches etc. and prefer one that has a brush roller.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Golden 46F here this morning, I woke up freezing during the night, should of left the heat on, definitely not short of rain either.

Hope you get some rain!! So no fires start near you, that's gotta be so scary.

Speaking of fires, there was an abandoned mill fire near moms, this weekend. When my oldest was 15 one summer day him and his friend decided to build a small fire and skateboard over it. The biggest issue with that was, they built it in an old abandoned rather large TP factory, I'm sure you can imagine what happened next. So this brought back some memories..... 🤪

Gershun, my mom's got one she loves, I was actually planning on buying one myself, I'll let you know later the brand.

Gershun - I have had a Red Revil for years and it still works well. It has a roller brush and a very long cord.

Daisy -about 50F here now and I love it. Prob going up to 65 and very windy this afternoon which I don't love. The field outside is getting greener.

Make that Red Devil

Lol.
Red Devil for too too many years.
An upright vacuum is hard to use on your couches.

My favorite vacuum was a Kenmore Cannister vacuum with a beater bar brush
back in the day. Saved the carpets like new for many years. So many that when you want to change out the carpets, they are still like new and it cannot be financially justified.

However, I think you are looking for a cordless vacuum for your couches.
I like the Brand name Miele. Never owned one.

send - what I am referring to this is not an upright vacuum. It's a small handheld one with a roller brush, a wand out the side and a very long cord. I prefer it to the cordless ones. It's also called a Dirt Devil. I don't know if they make them any more.

Golden,
Yes! Mine is called a "Dirt Devil". Not a Red Devil.

Yes! They still make the small handheld vacuum under the name of "Dirt Devil"
in the U.S.

Searching on Amazon or Walmart might yield a decent vacuum Gershun.

Went on a walk in my neighborhood this morning and saw a couple of elders potentially headed for rehab .

One neighbor in his later 70’s not walking as well as he used to, not picking up his feet, and is stooped over went out on his motorcycle this morning .
YIKES.

I also saw an elderly man precariously on a ladder in his driveway about 10-12 feet high trying to hose off the top of his very large camper.

Coincidently there is a rehab facility a half mile away , as well as two AL’s and an SNF.

Way, I see people here tottering to their vehicles regularly. They can barely walk but, by gum, they can drive - big SUVs.and take 10 minutes (I'm exaggerating here) to get into or out of their parking spots. Then it's totter to get a grocery cart and transfer the groceries and maneuver the cart and so on.

I had a girlfriend who needed a walker to get around, but once she was in her car you could see she felt free. One cold December day when the road conditions were poor. she was driving north to her younger daughter's for Christmas, accompanied by one of her granddaughters who was on a break from university. In a split second she made a bad decision in bad road conditions and lost her life. Her granddaughter, fortunately, survived with only a mild concussion and has no memory of the accident which killed her grandmother instantly.

When I heard the details I didn't think it was the road conditions as much as a bad decision to overtake. I had suspected for a while that she was developing dementia as she had mentioned not always knowing her way in the city she had lived for 40 years, She picked me up once from her son's house and got lost on the way back to her house. Fortunately I figured it out.

M was a very bright and social lady and one of my best friends, but I wasn't comfortable with her driving, not that there was anything I could have done about it. She was 75 and lived in assisted living. I am so thankful that her granddaughter survived basically unharmed.

Golden, that's so sad, 😔 , so glad her granddaughter was ok

My hubbys father in his middle 80s went around a corner to fast, rolled his SUV, his mom was upside down too long and her heart failed, his father never got over it, started drinking, fell and never recovered from a broken hip, that was before me.

Just feels so wrong , people dieing in there later years of car accidents.

The place I see many is moms foot doctor, man 90 percent of them shouldnt be driving, I spend the whole time in the weighting room helping people in with their walkers.

Golden , Daisy ,
Driving is a problem . Some don’t have other ways to get around I suppose , or don’t want to inconvenience anyone , or don’t recognize they are having problems , or do and they are stubborn .

I guess there isn’t a podiatrist who makes house calls by you Daisy . We do have them by me .

It's amazing that the Granddaughter survived alright.
My niece was 14 and shouldn't have been driving, and she hit a tree and she and the other 14 year old that was with her ,both died.
and
I probably shouldn't be driving any more, myself because I don't feel my foot on the gas and Iv'e come so close to hitting the car in front of me and a few other things I do wrong with my driving but
If my dh or a friend will drive ,I feel safer and I know that the people around me are safer.

Lucky
That happened to a 16 yr old in my family. Two girls, one car accident, coming home from a school event. Both died. Heartbreaking.

I wonder how difficult it would be for you to convert your car to hand controls? Might give you a few more years to drive.

Could you feel the pedal if you were barefoot? That’s one of the problems with the thick soles that are popular now. We need to do foot exercises, go barefoot, etc to retain the feeling in our feet which is vital for stability of the body.

Watch this on YouTube. Might give you some ideas.
