Find Care & Housing
Hi CWillie and Send,

I will be in and out this afternoon.

I am inside cooling off. Just finished mowing the lawn.

Someone tell me it’s cool somewhere...🥵

We are a pretty traditional conservative church but I've seen a few pairs of blue jeans there Send. My father's generation wore a full suit and tie, now we've got an elder in shorts serving communion alongside the pastor. At least he's still "in uniform" (robes).

What do you want to talk about CWillie?
I also am not going to church.
Myself, I am not a good conversationalist, more like a post and run.
But I will come back.
I also know a few people on here not going to church today.

A few pastors I know of wear blue jeans to church. I know that is not what you are wearing. What is the summer fashion in Canada anyway? Is it more formal than blue jeans?

There are also very serious topics.

Hi everyone, anyone just want to chat?
I'm all dressed and ready for church but I just don't want to go, it's a holiday weekend and that means nobody will be there except the Very Faithful and I sure not one of those. It is that time of year when we are noticeably teetering on the pinnacle of summer before beginning the headlong rush into fall - the wheat is harvested, the crickets are out, the earliest garden crops are finished and the rest are swiftly ripening. sigh

Parking wars day 5–neighbor still hasn’t moved their car. It’s been in front of our house since 12:55pm Tuesday. It’s now illegally parked-72 hour law.

Do you all have a 72 hour law in your city?

Hubby will be able to park in the driveway all week since I am off to help my parents. Told my mom I was coming up for a visit and she’s putting me right to work! Needs things thrown out and furniture moved. Yay for getting rid of crap but boo for moving furniture. I don’t know why my mom keeps buying new furniture and replacing the flooring at her age, with 2 indoor dogs and 2 indoor cats but it keeps her happy so it is what is it. I would rather she sell the house and come back down here where she can breathe and has a better quality of life.

At our church they publish a list of all the people who have birthdays, anniversaries and baptismal birthdays coming up in the next week, and guess whose name was still on it. Even worse when the pastor read them out for prayers he didn't catch it either - good thing I'd read the bulletin so I was kind of expecting it.😐

Ours here is about $15 a month for once a week trash and recycling pickup. We have the recycle truck which comes by on the same morning as the trash. Our city started recycling a couple of years back. There is the option to opt out of recycling, but it costs a few dollars more per month to do so. Trash and recycle carts are supplied by the company who provides our citywide service.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the company, as they are pretty good about picking up most items, but I do wish we still had twice a week pickup like we used to have when we first moved here. It would be nice to have a choice of companies here too so we could compare prices and services. Ours is selected and voted on by the city and we pay for water and trash services on the same bill.

Talking trash, again? Just always wanted to say that, but the timing was never right :)

Here in my area, out in the suburbs, our bill is close to $100 every 3 months for twice a week trash pickup... once a week landscaping debris .... and once a week recycling.

I can use whatever trash service company I want. The company will supply wheel bins but I use an old Rubber Maid trash barrel that is easier to manage and to store in the garage. That barrel must be 30 years old and still going strong. I do have a couple of recycling bins.

Sometimes another company will pick up my trash in error... so sig other quickly looks around for more stuff to put out [we are downsizing "stuff"] for when the company we pay comes around later in the day :)

We can pretty much put out anything with reason and it will be picked up. This week an old very sturdy but growing moss lawn chair went on its merry way. We never sit out on the back deck anyway.

At Christmas time, sig other tries to catch the regular trash driver and gives him a monetary tip.

I like the trash service we have, the trucks and pick-ups are fairly quiet, as a long metal arm comes out from the truck to pick up the wheel bins, shakes out whatever is in that bin, then place them back. The metal arm can even close the lids. The other companies sound like a rolling thunder storm coming through :P

Worried,
My state use to be big on recycling, but not so much anymore. We do have where we turn in our pop cans and plastic pop bottles in for cash.
Like Isthisrealyreal, here you don't have to have garbage sevices. Although, I wish they did. I have a neighbor who keeps his garbage in his garage then he gets mad because my cat goes over to his house to mouse hunt. I did tell him I should charge him for every time my cat catches a mouse because that is one less mouse that could end up in his house. I won't tell you what he told me I could do with my cat! Good figure!

Isthisrealyreal, you trash company chargers 40 a month that is high. We pay around 60 every 3 months. Wow!!

As far as being charged for service whether you put the bins out or not, it is the same here, you have to sign up for service though. We didn't. Doesn't make any sense to pay 40.00 monthly when the recycling facility is like 8 miles from my house and I break it all down, usually make a run every quarter and it is free to drop it off.

Cali, if your script is from June 2019 you will be fine. No one will honor an old script, which makes total sense.

You do not need to use their optometrist services. It is for convenience purposes only.

Thanks isthisreallyreal! Sounds like Costco is quite cost effective. I just had an exam in early June so all I need to do is get a written ‘script for the lenses and hopefully Costco will help me out. My insurance won’t pay for another exam until next June & I don’t want to pay out of pocket.

So you don’t have to pay for trash collection if you don’t put trash out? That’s awesome. But not how it works here haha! They charge you whether you put your cans out each week or not. There’s no way to avoid being charged. My MILs partner never used their bins so they paid for a service they didn’t use. Which made no sense to us considering what a cheap SOB the guy is. Every night he would take the trash out to random private dumpsters. For someone who loathes paying taxes and got their utilities down to the bare minimum (he cancelled cable, they paid $49 a month for Internet. $49 a month for MILs cell phone, $20 for Netflix, $30 for water and $60-ish for Pg&e, that was the extent of their bills). They had the smallest trash bins so they paid around $80 every 3 months And they never used their trash bins! For years he took the trash to a dumpster every night. I don’t think I will ever understand that one!

Cwillie, I guess I didn’t realize that Canada’s universal healthcare doesn’t include dental and vision. To be honest a lot of us in the US who have vision and dental insurance have pretty crappy plans. Our plans are pretty bad BUT it’s better than nothing. I’m looking at well over $400 out of pocket if I get my glasses from my optometrist. Hopefully Costco will sell me a pair without charging me for an exam!”

Shell, thanks for the explanation! That makes total sense. I take it your state isn’t big on recycling like California is? We are required to recycle as far as I know, which is why the trash company gives us a big recycling bin. The only things we don’t recycle are cans and plastic bottles because we turn them in to a recycling center for cash. 5 or 6 big bags of bottles usually nets around $40! It sounds like it is better to have more than just city-contracted trash services! I wish we had that option BUT it is nice that they pick up yard waste twice a month. If they didn’t, we’d have to make a dump run regularly.

MsMadge, I feel your pain! I had to find a new eye dr last year because my eye dr of 10 years move out of state! It was the strangest thing, I called and instead of the usual Dr B’s office greeting, the receptionist said “family optometry”! And then she said B had moved out of state and that they didn’t have an optometrist in the office! It was so strange. I went to an eye dr recommended by a friend and wasn’t happy with them because I have astigmatism and my right eye was blurry after they changed my contact prescription and they couldnt get it any clearer. I tried a different place this year at the recommendation of another friend and I like them much better BUT they are a lot more expensive! My old eye dr didn’t charge an arm & a leg, I could get glasses and walk out without spending more than $200!

I typically get 2 new pair of progressive (trifocals) glasses every 2 years - my eye dr of the past 20 years is located in my office bldg so very handy except he lost his lease and is moving out next week - and isn't taking any more appointments - oh swell

I'm very particular about the frames, nose pads and even where they sit on my nose so I'm nervous about starting with someone new especially if I have to return for adjustments
Even with pretty decent insurance, I'm generally out a few hundred

Worried, dental and and eye glasses are not covered under our provincial health plan and I've never worked for a company that gave extra benefits, so those costs have always been 100% on me - I also had to pay for the initial eye exam. And those are Canadian dollars, everything is less in American dollars.

Worried no I do not live in the country. I live in a small city and we have 3 companies that pick up trash. However, none of them do lawn waste. All of them do offer bins with an extra charge on your bill. The company that I am with has one size and it is way to big and expensive. Like you we get a bill every three months and they charge you for the size, but if you use the company's bin then you get your regular pick up charge plus the bin size and then the rent of using their been. Does that make sense? So it is cheaper to by your own, plus if it gets stolen you don't have to pay the company for the bin, just go buy a new one. And we don't have a company anymore that picks up recyclables because the two places where the recycling is done at, quite taking most of the recyclables. They now only take glass and some boxes, but no more plastic bags, pop boxes, not even pizza boxes... well the list goes on and on!

So we have to haul or pay someone to haul away our lawn waste except for our leaves the city does that in the fall for free.

No I don't have to call every week to have the trash remove, we have a pick up day like everybody else. But you can choose not to have trash removal services as well. Basically our trash companies are not contracted through the city here.

Cali, 2 pairs of progressive lenses, 1 pair of single lense, all with reflective, anti-scratch and 1 with transition less then 480.00. We paid 60.00 for the eye exam on sight. All the latest technology and the easiest eye exam ever.

If your prescription is older than 1 year they require an eye exam. That is because they warranty the glasses and if your site has changed then obviously you won't like the results.

We have city garbage or private industry options, they all provide wheelie bins for trash and recycling. We recycle and compost so we make 1 produce bag of garbage about every 10 days. I throw it in the bin at the gas station, I can't pay 40.00 monthly for 3 little bags. Just my 2cents

Shell, are you out in the country or something? I thought everyone had trash pickup through their city/county! The trash company is contracted with the city & they provide the bins, it’s an automatic service, but do pay for it. They send a bill every 3 months. They give you a small brown bin for trash, large grey bin for recyclables and large green bin for yard waste. The small trash bin is to encourage you to recycle. Your bill is based on the size of your bins, you can request bigger bins but your bill will be higher. I don’t know why but I thought trash collection was a basic city service everywhere! Do you have to call every week & arrange for your trash to be picked up?

Report

Thank you CM for clearing up the wheelie bin. 😁

We have wheelie bins and like Worried we call them trash cans or bins, but we had to buy our own and pay a company to pick them up weekly and they have to stay on your.property. If you put them in the street you will get a ticket but that is just in my city. Bigger cities can have them in the street. They are for household garbage only, any lawn waste in the bin and the company will not pick it up and you will be sent a not so nice letter. I think the ticket is $50.00.

Duly noted CM. I think I would have a breakdown if I was hauled in to court to the tune of £3k!

We do have wheelie bins in the states. I call them trash cans or bins.i think I like “wheelie bins” better though! The trash company gives each house their own trash, recycling and yard waste bins. We put them on the street the night before trash day. We store ours in the backyard behind the gate because believe it or not, sometimes the bins go missing! The only disputes I’ve heard of are residents in over populated neighborshods leaving their bins on the street so no one can park in front of their house. Or people deliberately park in front of the bins, preventing the trash from being collected! Which creates a problem for the resident because the trash and recycling bins are small and most households fill them up in a week. You get charged extra if the lid on your bins doesn’t close & there’s trash piled up. So....miss a week of trash collection and you either pay a fine or you have to take the excess trash to the dump which isn’t free either :/

Countrymouse. we have "wheely bins " here, but in my area they are for recycling. They are picked up for free every 2 weeks, Our trash is picked up weekly, and we privately pay for that.

Worried, I once got dragged into a four-household dispute over where one woman wanted to leave her wheelie bin. It cost us £3K each. Our lawyer had a nervous breakdown. I'm scarred.

Oh, now, I suspect you don't have wheelie bins in the States... :( They're trash bins on wheels, issued by local councils for garbage collection. You must have something like them, surely? What happens in cities and suburbs?

Anyway. If Mrs Cor-tesy, as we named her, ever wants to leave her wheelie bin in your shared driveway for heaven's sake just let her. It's not worth it.

Cwillie was that how much you paid after your insurance paid their part? That seems so high especially if you didn’t get the anti-glare coating. I did pick out a pair and get a quote last month-$330 if I had used my insurance benefit, and that was without any extras! Just lenses and frames. My insurance will pay $100 per year towards contacts or glasses, it’s one or the other. I used it to get contacts this year.

isthisreallyreal, great idea! We are Costco members. I can take my written prescription there & get glasses right? I don’t have to have an exam first? I only wear my glasses at night unless I run out of contacts. Which is why I’ve always declined the “extras”. This year I had told myself to splurge and get it all since I’ve been putting it off for years, so the rest of the family can get what they need. my vision has gotten worse since I last got new glasses so I’ve been wearing the wrong prescription. I figure maybe if I find a pair that actually looks good on me (most look ridiculous because of my face shape and small face) I would start wearing them during the day too.

$504 for my progressive glasses, this includes a frame that comes with magnetized clip on sunglasses which I figured was one way to get sunglasses without having to buy another pair. The single vision reading glasses were a bargain at under $150.
From what I read on line the newer anti reflective lenses don't have the problems with smears, dust and smudges that they used to, but I don't trust that applies to lenses that aren't made by crizal, essilor or other top of the line products. The ones I had were always so dirty or foggy it was worse than any reflections, that despite cleaning several times a day.

Cali, check out Costco optical. Prices were really reasonable and we had our glasses in a few days, with really good warranties.

Think about how you handle and use your glasses, this will help you decide which options you want. Costco does use the latest technology for lenses and that is a scratch resistant polymer or something like that, no extra fee.

I miss my transition lenses, I was not thinking about how I wear and handle my glasses that day. Next time I will remember, I hope.

Cwillie & FF I’m glad you guys brought this up! I’ve never sprung for anti-glare coating on my glasses and I don’t think I ever will. I didn’t know that it attracted dirt and smidges. I have a hard enough time keeping my glasses clean as it is! I’m overdue for a new pair-I had my anual exam booked and then my FIL died & we had to go out of state so I decided to get contacts and wait on the glasses for a few months because they always cost me hundreds of dollars. I had told myself this year I’m getting new glasses with the anti scratch coat and everything else they try to upsell,. I always decline everything they try to push on you-anti glare, some special coating to keep the lenses from scratching and something that makes the lens darken when you are outdoors because it all adds up! And the optician has never once mentioned that the anti glare coating attracts dust!

cwilie, I have had those anti-glare coating on my glasses for decades. Guess I am so use to cleaning the lenses that it is just part of my daily life. If I am ever stopped by the police and they need fingerprints, I could just hand them my glasses :P

I just picked up my new glasses and reading glasses. I'm kinda wishing I got the anti reflective coating, but I am gun shy after having a horrible experience with it attracting every bit of dirt and smudge years ago... the optometrist wasn't reassuring that it has improved since then. I hate the adjustment period. The cost wasn't any fun either.

*correction, husband had to partially block OUR driveway last night, not the neighbors!

LOL FF! I don’t want to end up on live PD either! That would be so embarrassing!

CM, the parking issue isn’t that serious! It’s not going to escalate. Nobody is angry over it. My husband is a little annoyed because they took “his” spot but it’s fine, it’s a public street and he of all people knows that. He would never go over and say anything to do them or ask them to park elsewhere. He probably parked inches from their rear bumper because he had to leave enough room for me to park in the driveway when I got home from our son’s football practice. I’m the only one who ever gets bent out of shape overly neighor issues (loud music) and wants to call the cops!

The car is still in the same spot today. As I stood looking out the window waiting for my coffee to finish brewing, it occurred to me that the actual reason they are parking in front of our house is probably so that their visitors can park in front of their house & in their driveway! Our street is “permit-only” parking and since they are next to the park, I believe the front of their house is 2 hour parking just like in front of the park. The rest of the block is permit only parking. I just hope that when they move their car, they park under the tree ;)
