Hey folks, welcome to the new whine/general topic thread. Feel free to use this thread to discuss anything that is on your mind. Caregiving- related stuff, life after a loved one's death, your own emotional wellbeing. Whatever..........anything on your mind.
I will be in and out this afternoon.
I am inside cooling off. Just finished mowing the lawn.
Someone tell me it’s cool somewhere...🥵
I also am not going to church.
Myself, I am not a good conversationalist, more like a post and run.
But I will come back.
I also know a few people on here not going to church today.
A few pastors I know of wear blue jeans to church. I know that is not what you are wearing. What is the summer fashion in Canada anyway? Is it more formal than blue jeans?
There are also very serious topics.
I'm all dressed and ready for church but I just don't want to go, it's a holiday weekend and that means nobody will be there except the Very Faithful and I sure not one of those. It is that time of year when we are noticeably teetering on the pinnacle of summer before beginning the headlong rush into fall - the wheat is harvested, the crickets are out, the earliest garden crops are finished and the rest are swiftly ripening. sigh
Do you all have a 72 hour law in your city?
Hubby will be able to park in the driveway all week since I am off to help my parents. Told my mom I was coming up for a visit and she’s putting me right to work! Needs things thrown out and furniture moved. Yay for getting rid of crap but boo for moving furniture. I don’t know why my mom keeps buying new furniture and replacing the flooring at her age, with 2 indoor dogs and 2 indoor cats but it keeps her happy so it is what is it. I would rather she sell the house and come back down here where she can breathe and has a better quality of life.
Overall, I'm pretty happy with the company, as they are pretty good about picking up most items, but I do wish we still had twice a week pickup like we used to have when we first moved here. It would be nice to have a choice of companies here too so we could compare prices and services. Ours is selected and voted on by the city and we pay for water and trash services on the same bill.
Here in my area, out in the suburbs, our bill is close to $100 every 3 months for twice a week trash pickup... once a week landscaping debris .... and once a week recycling.
I can use whatever trash service company I want. The company will supply wheel bins but I use an old Rubber Maid trash barrel that is easier to manage and to store in the garage. That barrel must be 30 years old and still going strong. I do have a couple of recycling bins.
Sometimes another company will pick up my trash in error... so sig other quickly looks around for more stuff to put out [we are downsizing "stuff"] for when the company we pay comes around later in the day :)
We can pretty much put out anything with reason and it will be picked up. This week an old very sturdy but growing moss lawn chair went on its merry way. We never sit out on the back deck anyway.
At Christmas time, sig other tries to catch the regular trash driver and gives him a monetary tip.
I like the trash service we have, the trucks and pick-ups are fairly quiet, as a long metal arm comes out from the truck to pick up the wheel bins, shakes out whatever is in that bin, then place them back. The metal arm can even close the lids. The other companies sound like a rolling thunder storm coming through :P
My state use to be big on recycling, but not so much anymore. We do have where we turn in our pop cans and plastic pop bottles in for cash.
Like Isthisrealyreal, here you don't have to have garbage sevices. Although, I wish they did. I have a neighbor who keeps his garbage in his garage then he gets mad because my cat goes over to his house to mouse hunt. I did tell him I should charge him for every time my cat catches a mouse because that is one less mouse that could end up in his house. I won't tell you what he told me I could do with my cat! Good figure!
Isthisrealyreal, you trash company chargers 40 a month that is high. We pay around 60 every 3 months. Wow!!
You do not need to use their optometrist services. It is for convenience purposes only.
So you don’t have to pay for trash collection if you don’t put trash out? That’s awesome. But not how it works here haha! They charge you whether you put your cans out each week or not. There’s no way to avoid being charged. My MILs partner never used their bins so they paid for a service they didn’t use. Which made no sense to us considering what a cheap SOB the guy is. Every night he would take the trash out to random private dumpsters. For someone who loathes paying taxes and got their utilities down to the bare minimum (he cancelled cable, they paid $49 a month for Internet. $49 a month for MILs cell phone, $20 for Netflix, $30 for water and $60-ish for Pg&e, that was the extent of their bills). They had the smallest trash bins so they paid around $80 every 3 months And they never used their trash bins! For years he took the trash to a dumpster every night. I don’t think I will ever understand that one!
Cwillie, I guess I didn’t realize that Canada’s universal healthcare doesn’t include dental and vision. To be honest a lot of us in the US who have vision and dental insurance have pretty crappy plans. Our plans are pretty bad BUT it’s better than nothing. I’m looking at well over $400 out of pocket if I get my glasses from my optometrist. Hopefully Costco will sell me a pair without charging me for an exam!”
Shell, thanks for the explanation! That makes total sense. I take it your state isn’t big on recycling like California is? We are required to recycle as far as I know, which is why the trash company gives us a big recycling bin. The only things we don’t recycle are cans and plastic bottles because we turn them in to a recycling center for cash. 5 or 6 big bags of bottles usually nets around $40! It sounds like it is better to have more than just city-contracted trash services! I wish we had that option BUT it is nice that they pick up yard waste twice a month. If they didn’t, we’d have to make a dump run regularly.
MsMadge, I feel your pain! I had to find a new eye dr last year because my eye dr of 10 years move out of state! It was the strangest thing, I called and instead of the usual Dr B’s office greeting, the receptionist said “family optometry”! And then she said B had moved out of state and that they didn’t have an optometrist in the office! It was so strange. I went to an eye dr recommended by a friend and wasn’t happy with them because I have astigmatism and my right eye was blurry after they changed my contact prescription and they couldnt get it any clearer. I tried a different place this year at the recommendation of another friend and I like them much better BUT they are a lot more expensive! My old eye dr didn’t charge an arm & a leg, I could get glasses and walk out without spending more than $200!
I'm very particular about the frames, nose pads and even where they sit on my nose so I'm nervous about starting with someone new especially if I have to return for adjustments
Even with pretty decent insurance, I'm generally out a few hundred
So we have to haul or pay someone to haul away our lawn waste except for our leaves the city does that in the fall for free.
No I don't have to call every week to have the trash remove, we have a pick up day like everybody else. But you can choose not to have trash removal services as well. Basically our trash companies are not contracted through the city here.
If your prescription is older than 1 year they require an eye exam. That is because they warranty the glasses and if your site has changed then obviously you won't like the results.
We have city garbage or private industry options, they all provide wheelie bins for trash and recycling. We recycle and compost so we make 1 produce bag of garbage about every 10 days. I throw it in the bin at the gas station, I can't pay 40.00 monthly for 3 little bags. Just my 2cents
and who won the lawsuit?
We have wheelie bins and like Worried we call them trash cans or bins, but we had to buy our own and pay a company to pick them up weekly and they have to stay on your.property. If you put them in the street you will get a ticket but that is just in my city. Bigger cities can have them in the street. They are for household garbage only, any lawn waste in the bin and the company will not pick it up and you will be sent a not so nice letter. I think the ticket is $50.00.
We do have wheelie bins in the states. I call them trash cans or bins.i think I like “wheelie bins” better though! The trash company gives each house their own trash, recycling and yard waste bins. We put them on the street the night before trash day. We store ours in the backyard behind the gate because believe it or not, sometimes the bins go missing! The only disputes I’ve heard of are residents in over populated neighborshods leaving their bins on the street so no one can park in front of their house. Or people deliberately park in front of the bins, preventing the trash from being collected! Which creates a problem for the resident because the trash and recycling bins are small and most households fill them up in a week. You get charged extra if the lid on your bins doesn’t close & there’s trash piled up. So....miss a week of trash collection and you either pay a fine or you have to take the excess trash to the dump which isn’t free either :/
Oh, now, I suspect you don't have wheelie bins in the States... :( They're trash bins on wheels, issued by local councils for garbage collection. You must have something like them, surely? What happens in cities and suburbs?
Anyway. If Mrs Cor-tesy, as we named her, ever wants to leave her wheelie bin in your shared driveway for heaven's sake just let her. It's not worth it.
isthisreallyreal, great idea! We are Costco members. I can take my written prescription there & get glasses right? I don’t have to have an exam first? I only wear my glasses at night unless I run out of contacts. Which is why I’ve always declined the “extras”. This year I had told myself to splurge and get it all since I’ve been putting it off for years, so the rest of the family can get what they need. my vision has gotten worse since I last got new glasses so I’ve been wearing the wrong prescription. I figure maybe if I find a pair that actually looks good on me (most look ridiculous because of my face shape and small face) I would start wearing them during the day too.
From what I read on line the newer anti reflective lenses don't have the problems with smears, dust and smudges that they used to, but I don't trust that applies to lenses that aren't made by crizal, essilor or other top of the line products. The ones I had were always so dirty or foggy it was worse than any reflections, that despite cleaning several times a day.
Think about how you handle and use your glasses, this will help you decide which options you want. Costco does use the latest technology for lenses and that is a scratch resistant polymer or something like that, no extra fee.
I miss my transition lenses, I was not thinking about how I wear and handle my glasses that day. Next time I will remember, I hope.
LOL FF! I don’t want to end up on live PD either! That would be so embarrassing!
CM, the parking issue isn’t that serious! It’s not going to escalate. Nobody is angry over it. My husband is a little annoyed because they took “his” spot but it’s fine, it’s a public street and he of all people knows that. He would never go over and say anything to do them or ask them to park elsewhere. He probably parked inches from their rear bumper because he had to leave enough room for me to park in the driveway when I got home from our son’s football practice. I’m the only one who ever gets bent out of shape overly neighor issues (loud music) and wants to call the cops!
The car is still in the same spot today. As I stood looking out the window waiting for my coffee to finish brewing, it occurred to me that the actual reason they are parking in front of our house is probably so that their visitors can park in front of their house & in their driveway! Our street is “permit-only” parking and since they are next to the park, I believe the front of their house is 2 hour parking just like in front of the park. The rest of the block is permit only parking. I just hope that when they move their car, they park under the tree ;)
