I do ditch the crutches when I'm inside. I just kind of limp along. But I can't put all my weight on it yet so I need the crutches outside at least until hubs is off work and can take me to get a fracture boot. As I said the only ones they had at the orthopedic office were those long ones that come up to the knee plus they were too much money. We'll pick a shorter, hopefully cheaper one up this weekend.

Technically breaking your metatarsals isn't breaking your toes, they are the long foot bones below the toes. I did a little reading and it seems that other than dropping something heavy on the foot a fall where you twist the foot is the most usual cause, and your description of the fall seems to fit with that scenario.
If you haven't been cautioned against weight bearing then I think I'd ditch the crutches unless doing without hurts.

Glad, I like your broken toes story. I was almost embarrassed explaining to the intake person how I hurt mine. He said "So, what are you saying? You tripped on something and you don't know what it was, inside your home? Me: Yup

I wish I could have said it was a snowboarding accident or it happened when I landed skydiving. A lot more glamorous.

Llama, I know I was exaggerating. Just what Beatty had said made me laugh so I thought I'd continue in that vein.

Although I did get an earful when I was waiting there for the doc. The nurses were discussing quite loudly some patients and their experiences. I couldn't help wondering what they might have said about me after I left. I understand for them it might be stress relief and I get that but keeping their voices down would probably serve them better in the future. JMHO

G, phew that makes me feel better. I broke a couple of toes, 4&5 a few months ago. They hurt for a few days, no doc, no nothing. Because it was summer I was able to wear sandals ok. If it were now, I would be wearing my UGGS. Anyone living up north should have them anyway! I use mine almost exclusively for inside and to the mail box slippers.I

I have to say though that my beat up toes were a bit more glamorous and caused by kicking sand roses that are by my bedroom door.😊😊

I found a walker easier to use than crutches following cellulitis in my leg. I understand it takes more upper body strength to move with zero weight on the leg but it worked for me - at least on solid level surfaces.

You made me laugh Beatty. "Two broken metatarsals here!" LOL

There was a guy in the bed next to me who was having a cyst drained. "Draining a cyst here!" ''

"Okay, impacted bowel, bed ten"

"Got it!................hey, could you get me a pumpkin spice when you go to Starbucks!"

"Yep, no prob........just need to deal with the meth addict in bed two'

Yes, factory medicine at it's finest. ;)

Good advice Beatty! I'm not good with the crutches. I'll admit it, not the most coordinated person. Never have been.

I'll keep in mind all you said. Thx!

I think medical people forget sometimes about PEOPLE.
'2 fractured metatarsals here. Next!'

But toes are attached to a living PERSON & breaking bones (even if smaller ones) is a big deal in a person's world.

Gershun, well tea & sympathy HERE 🤗

Once your swelling reduces, hopefully the boot will mean getting around is easier. Take care with the crutches! Dangeling from crutches (if armpit type) can damage armpit nerves - avoid. Mind how your use your shoulders (forearm type). Not up at your ears? Also, take care when placing the crutches down. Met a lady that tripped on her fallen crutches (used for ankle sprain) & broke her elbow!! Don't do that.

Golden the ortho doc was kind of "Well, you can wear the boot and use the crutches or not, whatever is most comfortable for you" I am quite taken aback by how blase the doc at the E R and this doc were. Yeah, I get it. People break things and I'm not dying but a little advice would be nice. She could have phoned it in today.

Gershun - glad the swelling has gone down. I am surprised at no aftercare instructions. Will you still need crutches with the boot?

One thing to add. I've never broke anything in my life before. When I was at the E R the doctor didn't go near my foot. Touch it, look at it. Nothing. It was swollen to twice it's size and turning blue. But no. He stood there at the curtain of my cubicle and shouted across to me. You broke two toes!! No aftercare instructions. No wrapping it. Nothing. He gave me two tylenol and an advil. Offered a sandwich which was nice but I'm flummoxed???

Today, the orthopedic dr. Same thing. Didn't look at my foot or touch it. It's a nice shade of purple and green now and still slightly swollen but it's not contaminated. Yeah, I know. There's nothing to do with broken metatarsals but really?

Honestly Willie, it's all a blur. I think what may have happened is I was navigating between our bed and the dresser. Let me add space is limited so navigating is the right word to use. I think I may have been trying to get past something jutting out on my makeup table and while doing so tripped. My left foot stayed in one spot while my body moved forward. My foot was bent forward when I started getting up. So stress fracture I guess?

Anyway, no matter how it happened it sucks!

How the heck did you break your metatarsals? Do you know/remember what caused your fall yet?

Just an update on my foot. I just got back from my Orthopedic appt.

So I've broken the 4th and 5th metatarsal bones on my left foot. No surgery required! Thank you God! I need to get a fracture boot. I could have got one from them but they only have the ones that come up to your knee and they want $150.00 for them. So we are going to pick one up from a Shopper's Home & Health store or somewhere like that.

She said it should take 4 to 6 week to recover fully. Meanwhile I'm hobbling around on my crutches. CWillie, I hear ya about hating the crutches. I hate them. I do better just limping around without them. Although today I needed them when we went out. In the pouring rain with my summer thong sandals on cause they are the only shoe I can get my foot in comfortably right now. It's slow going on them that's for sure. Only a few days of it and DH or in this case GH (grumpy hubs) is getting impatient.

Hello, haven't been here for sometime, been really busy just being a caregiver and keeping everything going forward. Husband is feeling better but still is very weak and he really doesn't want to do anything to help himself. We have been struggling also with memory loss and his anger. Everything I say is wrong, everything I do is wrong. He would never admit that maybe he forgot, no it's me that didn't tell him. It's me that made the mistake. Even though I do understand what is happening, it's so darn hard to hear all the time that you are the one that is wrong, you are the one that made the mistake, you are the one that never gets it right.

We were struggling with our marriage before this all happened so I imagine that doesn't help matters. I will never leave him and he can count on me to be there but sometimes I just have to wonder when are my feelings going to matter, when can I have someone say something nice to me.

Guess I am done with my feeling sorry for myself for now. Thank you for hearing me. I just needed someone to listen to me today,

Thx Llama, I didn't take the offer of the sandwich but it was nice of him to ask.

I got there at 9pm. and was home by 11:30. A record for me for emergency room visits. The only other times apart from visits for my mom which were numerous and too many to keep track of were when I used to have panic attacks and the wait time then was sometimes six to seven hours.

Only day two and I'm already having broken toes fatigue.

If you ever want to see a hilarious skit about small town parades look up This Hour has Twenty-Two minutes Christmas special. The whole episode was good but the part about the parade was priceless. I think it aired 2012.

I think it's a small town thing Gershun, there's not a whole lost else going on to kick off the holiday season and the people on the street (and in the parade) are probably your neighbours. Back when the parade was on a Saturday it used to bring people into the downtown shops too but I kinda doubt they're getting much business from these evening parades.

The nurse gave me a cursory demonstration of how to use crutches. I felt like such an idiot as I meandered my way through the vast sea of people in the E R waiting area. You know that seven mile stare people get when they're waiting in the E R. I guess I was a distraction. "Hey, look at that broad trying to use her crutches" LOL

Parades? Never saw the appeal. Even daytime ones.
