I want to share something happy. I will be leaving home and taking a month's worth of respite. In fact I'll be getting away from the whole country for a month!
I'm going on a trip with my daughter, Son-in-law, and 2 grandchildren to meet his mother and sister, they live in India, oh yeah...I said INDIA. We'll be leaving in 2 weeks (flying out March 10) and be gone for a month. My son-in-law is paying for everything so I have NO excuse not to take his hospitality and go and meet his family. I'll still be a caregiver, but entertaining babies is a welcome change, The diapers are much smaller and the butt cheeks are a whole lot cuter.
The decision to go was hard for me. When I mentioned the trip to my mother her initial reaction was...well...less than special. This was expected. She looked like she had swallowed an adult hedgehog and with her eyes bulging...blurted out "Well where should I stick my mother for a month? I doubt she'll fit up my ass!" She covered her mouth and ran from the room, feeling pretty bad about letting her "inside voice" turn into an "outside voice". I let that pass and it was good that I did, because everything is working out. My brother is going to fill in for me during the day. Way to go Rich!!!
Before my grandmother got sick my mother took many trips to places like Poland, Peru, Chili, Yugoslavia, France, Bahamas...just so many places. I haven't gotten the chance to go anywhere out of the country, and as many of you have said...Grandma is my mothers primary responsibility, I'm here to help but otherwise I should enjoy some life. The experience with my daughter will be incredible, and the time with the grandchildren will be a memory I'll carry forever. I don't get to see them as much as I want to. My only regret is that cubbie hubby can't go with me.
I'll be taking plenty of pictures. Our itinerary is pretty special and if everything goes according to plan I may get to see the Taj Mahal in Agra, and the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The best part of the trip will be meeting the woman who gave my daughter her wonderful husband. The world is a much smaller place than it used to be!
I wanted to share the info now because it is exciting, and because I've grown attached to you guys and don't want you to worry when I drop off the map for 4+weeks.

Took the flowers to cemetery. much easier now the snow melted, ya should a seen us last time two fat women humping it across forty yards or three foot deep snow, me in my bootie cast, slipping on wet buffed granite headstones...I mean it looked like something out of a 1930's funnies...only in colour! Not much changed there, deer poopies (yes more poop) wide open sky, the church a block away built like a mega plex, The Jewish Cemetery along the way, past the Community College where I remember standing in the parking lot and dancing, five years ago singing "Singing In The Rain" in a down pour waiting for a ride to come...Seems a long time ago now... Ah well least the ice was gone. and happy thoughts he will be in the ground next yes? Soon? Thank You....cousin can stay in Buffalo!
I'm sick of snow. We had over 8" today and expect another 4 to 6" tonight thru Monday. Got three driveways to shovel cause blower broke. I finnally got my mom to figure out that she shouldn't drive anymore. That is a good thing seeing that she is blind in her right eye and deaf in her left ear. She called this morning and didn't have any heat in the house so a furnace man came out and got that up and running. She's starting to slow down. She turned 86 in Dec., but still lives by herself yet. Still cleans her house and shovels the drive way. I think that keeps her going. Hope you guys like the jokes. I try to keep them clean. Pirate, I'm also sorry about your Mom! When I had to set my aunt up on hospice it was manditory to sign a DNR. And they did supply her bed, potty chair, gait belt, etc. We had to supply personal supplies like sheets, pillow, blankets, etc. I agree that it may be easier to take care of paperwork now instead of when it's a have to, more stress-filled time because decisions haven't been made. I agree with Jam also in that I personally want a DNR. When it's my time, let me go. Please know that we're all thinking about you & we're all here for you!

Ladeeda, a sister rock hound!!! I also love scared to death wood! I have a few pieces. My favorite is a polished one that I got at a gem show several years ago. Have gone hunting since I was 6 years old. Great trips going to Franklin, NC to the ruby mines & to Cleveland, GA for blue topaz & amethyst. I'm glad that your charge wasn't hurt in the fall & am so glad that you're getting to take her to the doc on Friday! Write down questions & take notes or better than that, take a small tape recorder to record what the doc has to say! Makes it easy to remmy when you get home.

I know that some of you have asked about getting a Crew jacket &/or a OBMAJ shirt. I have been thinking about how would be the best way to get the right style, color & size for you. With my limited time, due to caring for hubby & my limited funds, I've come up with an idea, if you guys don't mind helping me...
If you don't mind, if you can pick out, purchase & mail to me the article of clothing (t-shirt, sweat shirt, tank top, hoodie, jacket, cap, totebag, etc.) that you'd like to have the embroidery done on, then I can take them to get the embroidery done for you & mail them back to you. That way you'll get the style that will fit you best & get the color that you like best, too!
The embroidery cost is $10 per item & is the size that fits nicely on the pocket area of a shirt. The return shipping would depend on how many pieces to be mailed. That amount should be the same amount that it cost to ship the items to me.
I don't get to go to the mall often, so, if it's ok, I'll plan on taking all of the pieces, at one time, that I've received here by March 15. There was an uninformed person, named Amber Jane, who chastised us, a while back, & it really got on the nerves of all of us. Bobbie replied best for all of us when she replied, "Oh bite me Amber Jane"! It stuck! It's kinda like the banana & knife thing, now! Anyway, we did Bobbie a shirt with lips & teeth with OBMAJ underneath. A photo of that can also be seen on my FB profile page or I can email it to you.

Peach, Ladeeda: I was envisioning the banana and the lips, and I can't (won't) explain it. Nevermind. Hot water slab leak and I was wondering why it felt like a steam bath the last couple of days. Leak detectors coming today, jack hammer, ripping up hardwood floor, etc. CG will have to take Mother to library, mall, out to lunch, etc for a few days. "Oh Well", the only thing one can say. HB--I am imagining the post-India stories. When my son does his imitation of the 7/11 guy, I am ROFLMAO. "If Only" you can find a way to convey the speech pattern and inflection.
I think a reality show of caregiving would blow the Housewives of Jersey off the tube. I have never watched reality shows but get enough of a glimpse on ads, plus, my life is exciting enough. I don't need to take part in other people's drama.
HB, Jen, and Jam are the writers. Jam is also medical technical advisor. Stillstanding is the Producer. Ladeeda is professional advisor. Bobbie Is the Executive Producer and Director. Pirate is rum supplier and caterer(?), I, of course, do hair and makeup, and I believe wuvsicecream is a hairdresser, too. We film Deefer doing everything she does day and night, we film COL and many shots of the doggie piddling--over and over and over. The BOAT gets filmed, and viewers wonder--if life is such the pits for these people, why is there a yacht involved? It will make them watch and watch and watch. We film gruesome fight scenes in Italian restaurants with Selfish Siblings, Ted and their and then pan to SSK taking off, running in the snowy woods of MA to "escape". With her jumprope. Miz is the touch of glamour, and we see her with her young stud, at the tanning salon, getting her nails done, etc. Viewers say, "Hey, I want to be a caregiver, too! I'll have what she's having!" If I have left anyone out at this point in the plot development--oh, PULEEZE don't worry! I could go on and on, but I won't, cause HB is better at it, and I may have opened the can of worms for the day, this 21st day of February, 2011. Cheers, everyone! Have an awesome day! Good morning everyone......just checking in and I see that there is good news for some and still sad for others......:( :) Talked with col last night.....oh everything is just fine....visions of running through fields of daisies with you know who........... talked with substitute caregiver, col refused to allow her to change wet undies, got mad, you know the routine.....she let her get by until this morning....I let her know that col has a habit of using fiblets......and cg was not happy she was lied to....heard from her a little bit ago...col is clean, dry, my doggies are alive and they had coffee and coffee cake....only problem was that somehow the bidet was leaking, controls are attached at the side of seat...she either sat on it cuz she misses the seat a lot or she pushed down real hard on it...seen her do both and of course have seen her try to get up when it is still running......other than that everything is just peachy. I paid for the electricity to stay on at Harrah's for a couple of days last night....hubby contributed also. Tonight a bunch of the nurses and doctors from the ER are meeting us to give hubby a casual goodbye we love you retirement sendoff. That will be nice for him, since hospital admin has been such a**holes. Today is a do nothing except what I want to do day...and I will try not to think about col over a dozen times..... I just received a call from my Mom that her youngest sister has been diagnosed with stomach cancer again & it's not looking good. There are 9 kids in the family ages 63 - 87 & all are still living. They're all very upset, especially since this is their baby sister. Please keep them in your thoughts & prayers.

I am asking my grandma to pray for your intentions. She is very devoted since childhood which is why I don't think she has lost the ability to concentrate on Novena'a to the blessed mother.
Grandma did hesitate over praying for the Gross family...I had to quickly tell her "Oh no grandma, they aren't nasty...that is just their name." She said ok and started off on sending her prayers to the ears of the holy mother.

C-28, bring it on girl... that was great!!! As long as we all have a part to play in the "production" as you know we need some control somewhere, certainly have very little in our caregiving duties. We;ll save the squabbling for later. No, I want to be the______, no, you said I could be the _____. The stress and tension would be just like we were home tending to other uncooperative people.... Sounds like a blast...
The String Story: A true story that happened last year...
My Grandma has a real problem dealing with lint, hair, strings, and little things that fall on the floor. She is a lint-freakin-picker and she is not ashamed to do it anytime, anywhere. She can out-pick me, she can out-pick you, if pickin-lint was a competition, she’d win the purple ribbon every year.
Grandma was having a bad day both mentally and physically. Everything was especially hard for her since she had recently experienced a TIA (mini-stroke) that was causing weakness on her left side.
She was tiring very easily and it was mid-afternoon when she started feeling sorry for herself. I could hear her electric chair humming on the baby monitor accompanied by her huffing and puffing. She had woken from a nap and had to use the bathroom for the umpteenth time that day. The prospect of it was daunting for her. It was daunting for me as well.
She hadn’t called me to help her yet but I was on my way, as I rounded the corner to the room she suddenly started raging at her infirmity. She started banging her hand on her knee and declaring quite passionately over and over again that “She hated herself”. This was pretty alarming to me and I tried to calm her as best I could. I hugged her and hugged her before putting her into her wheelchair and moving her the 10 feet to the bathroom door. She was better but still pouting as she took the throne.
At this point in her care, she was still able to tend to her potty and clean up, so I gave her some privacy. Since she was a fall risk we never shut the door and I was around the corner sitting on the couch waiting.
I could hear some noises coming from the bathroom and I started thinking that something may be amiss…as I was getting up from my perch--I could clearly hear Grandma say “I HATE you! YOU take that! I’m done with YOU!”
I get to the bathroom and from my vantage point I see my Grandmother with a plastic leg shaver in a position that looks like she was aiming for her own wrist. At this point I’m completely out of my mind and screamed “GRANDMA! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?”
Grandma looked at me with surprise, pulled her hand away from under the razor and said quite defiantly…”I’m trying to cut this string off my panties.”
I helped her with her mission. Then I took every sharp object from that room.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that point. I cried then, but I can laugh now. She still freaks out over strings on her panties. She did it yesterday which reminded me to share the story.
Grandma is having a real bad day. She is having trouble finding words to express what she wants, and when she isn't trying to make herself clear, stares blankly. Her face isn't droopy, she isn't shaking, but she is clearly off her game.
Mom said she was just pointing at a book, and was struggling to say "hand me my pillow." The pillow was already on her lap.
We're on alert...looks like another TIA, but it is too soon to be sure.

Christina do you have any websites where I could get some ideas on how to do col's hair? She likes to wear it long.....but I think that time has passed. Her bangs hang to her eyes and are stick straight, she likes curls in the rest of it, but she thinks when you get a perm you have to "set" the perm with hot rollers or it will fall out. Told hubby the day she gets her new do he has to make the hot rollers disappear. And I found a curling iron that will also have to go. I want her to have something easy to take care of that she can just moisten with her fingers and fluff out. She has no clue about modern perms....she is still stuck in the Toni days with the tiny little pink perm rods.
Haven't gone downstairs to gamble yet today....had coffee, now sipping on iced tea...had a fruit tartlet for breakfast that was smothered in blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, raspberries and mandarin oranges, cream under with a very thin layer of chocolate and a perfect flaky crust.....oh my it was good. It has just been terrific to sit and read without being interrupted, or play on the computer and watch hubby napping. Going to stop at the City Market tomorrow and stock up on fresh veggies and fruit and then back to the grind.
I had a thought today and if anyone knows anything about insurance I would appreciate some thoughts.....col has a BC policy that she automatically got when she retired from the Federal Government...premiums paid for, etc. I wonder if it might have some type of "rider" for caregiving or long term care. I guess I will have to call them and go through all the hassle of sending copies of the POA so they will talk with me...but what a lifesaver for her and me if I could get someone to come in occasionally and give me a break and have her insurance cover the charges.
Hubby still napping and while I am surfing I'm watching an NCIS marathon.......life is hard today!

Before my grandmother got sick my mother took many trips to places like Poland, Peru, Chili, Yugoslavia, France, Bahamas...just so many places. I haven't gotten the chance to go anywhere out of the country, and as many of you have said...Grandma is my mothers primary responsibility, I'm here to help but otherwise I should enjoy some life. The experience with my daughter will be incredible, and the time with the grandchildren will be a memory I'll carry forever. I don't get to see them as much as I want to. My only regret is that cubbie hubby can't go with me.
I'll be taking plenty of pictures. Our itinerary is pretty special and if everything goes according to plan I may get to see the Taj Mahal in Agra, and the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The best part of the trip will be meeting the woman who gave my daughter her wonderful husband. The world is a much smaller place than it used to be!
I wanted to share the info now because it is exciting, and because I've grown attached to you guys and don't want you to worry when I drop off the map for 4+weeks.

Took the flowers to cemetery. much easier now the snow melted, ya should a seen us last time two fat women humping it across forty yards or three foot deep snow, me in my bootie cast, slipping on wet buffed granite headstones...I mean it looked like something out of a 1930's funnies...only in colour!
Not much changed there, deer poopies (yes more poop) wide open sky, the church a block away built like a mega plex, The Jewish Cemetery along the way, past the Community College where I remember standing in the parking lot and dancing, five years ago singing "Singing In The Rain" in a down pour waiting for a ride to come...Seems a long time ago now... Ah well least the ice was gone. and happy thoughts he will be in the ground next yes? Soon? Thank You....cousin can stay in Buffalo!

Pirate, I'm also sorry about your Mom! When I had to set my aunt up on hospice it was manditory to sign a DNR. And they did supply her bed, potty chair, gait belt, etc. We had to supply personal supplies like sheets, pillow, blankets, etc. I agree that it may be easier to take care of paperwork now instead of when it's a have to, more stress-filled time because decisions haven't been made. I agree with Jam also in that I personally want a DNR. When it's my time, let me go. Please know that we're all thinking about you & we're all here for you!
HB!!! WOW, what a trip!!! Do you need some "pre-packed" luggage for the trip?!?! I can use a large rolling duffle bag to avoid back strain! lol Your post was so sweet about getting to meet his mother! I hope that you'll have the bestest trip ever!!!
Ladeeda, a sister rock hound!!! I also love scared to death wood! I have a few pieces. My favorite is a polished one that I got at a gem show several years ago. Have gone hunting since I was 6 years old. Great trips going to Franklin, NC to the ruby mines & to Cleveland, GA for blue topaz & amethyst.
I'm glad that your charge wasn't hurt in the fall & am so glad that you're getting to take her to the doc on Friday! Write down questions & take notes or better than that, take a small tape recorder to record what the doc has to say! Makes it easy to remmy when you get home.

I know that some of you have asked about getting a Crew jacket &/or a OBMAJ shirt. I have been thinking about how would be the best way to get the right style, color & size for you. With my limited time, due to caring for hubby & my limited funds, I've come up with an idea, if you guys don't mind helping me...
If you don't mind, if you can pick out, purchase & mail to me the article of clothing (t-shirt, sweat shirt, tank top, hoodie, jacket, cap, totebag, etc.) that you'd like to have the embroidery done on, then I can take them to get the embroidery done for you & mail them back to you. That way you'll get the style that will fit you best & get the color that you like best, too!
The embroidery cost is $10 per item & is the size that fits nicely on the pocket area of a shirt. The return shipping would depend on how many pieces to be mailed. That amount should be the same amount that it cost to ship the items to me.
I don't get to go to the mall often, so, if it's ok, I'll plan on taking all of the pieces, at one time, that I've received here by March 15. For those of you who haven't see them, you can see a photo on my FaceBook profile page or I'll be glad to email them to you. Just let me know if you need anything else.

There was an uninformed person, named Amber Jane, who chastised us, a while back, & it really got on the nerves of all of us. Bobbie replied best for all of us when she replied, "Oh bite me Amber Jane"! It stuck! It's kinda like the banana & knife thing, now! Anyway, we did Bobbie a shirt with lips & teeth with OBMAJ underneath. A photo of that can also be seen on my FB profile page or I can email it to you.

Hot water slab leak and I was wondering why it felt like a steam bath the last couple of days. Leak detectors coming today, jack hammer, ripping up hardwood floor, etc. CG will have to take Mother to library, mall, out to lunch, etc for a few days.

HB--I am imagining the post-India stories. When my son does his imitation of the 7/11 guy, I am ROFLMAO. "If Only" you can find a way to convey the speech pattern and inflection.
I think a reality show of caregiving would blow the Housewives of Jersey off the tube. I have never watched reality shows but get enough of a glimpse on ads, plus, my life is exciting enough. I don't need to take part in other people's drama.
HB, Jen, and Jam are the writers. Jam is also medical technical advisor. Stillstanding is the Producer. Ladeeda is professional advisor. Bobbie Is the Executive Producer and Director. Pirate is rum supplier and caterer(?), I, of course, do hair and makeup, and I believe wuvsicecream is a hairdresser, too.
We film Deefer doing everything she does day and night, we film COL and many shots of the doggie piddling--over and over and over. The BOAT gets filmed, and viewers wonder--if life is such the pits for these people, why is there a yacht involved? It will make them watch and watch and watch. We film gruesome fight scenes in Italian restaurants with Selfish Siblings, Ted and their and then pan to SSK taking off, running in the snowy woods of MA to "escape". With her jumprope. Miz is the touch of glamour, and we see her with her young stud, at the tanning salon, getting her nails done, etc. Viewers say, "Hey, I want to be a caregiver, too! I'll have what she's having!"
If I have left anyone out at this point in the plot development--oh, PULEEZE don't worry!
I could go on and on, but I won't, cause HB is better at it, and I may have opened the can of worms for the day, this 21st day of February, 2011.

Talked with col last night.....oh everything is just fine....visions of running through fields of daisies with you know who........... talked with substitute caregiver, col refused to allow her to change wet undies, got mad, you know the routine.....she let her get by until this morning....I let her know that col has a habit of using fiblets......and cg was not happy she was lied to....heard from her a little bit ago...col is clean, dry, my doggies are alive and they had coffee and coffee cake....only problem was that somehow the bidet was leaking, controls are attached at the side of seat...she either sat on it cuz she misses the seat a lot or she pushed down real hard on it...seen her do both and of course have seen her try to get up when it is still running......other than that everything is just peachy.
I paid for the electricity to stay on at Harrah's for a couple of days last night....hubby contributed also. Tonight a bunch of the nurses and doctors from the ER are meeting us to give hubby a casual goodbye we love you retirement sendoff. That will be nice for him, since hospital admin has been such a**holes. Today is a do nothing except what I want to do day...and I will try not to think about col over a dozen times.....

I just received a call from my Mom that her youngest sister has been diagnosed with stomach cancer again & it's not looking good. There are 9 kids in the family ages 63 - 87 & all are still living. They're all very upset, especially since this is their baby sister. Please keep them in your thoughts & prayers.

I am asking my grandma to pray for your intentions. She is very devoted since childhood which is why I don't think she has lost the ability to concentrate on Novena'a to the blessed mother.
Grandma did hesitate over praying for the Gross family...I had to quickly tell her "Oh no grandma, they aren't nasty...that is just their name." She said ok and started off on sending her prayers to the ears of the holy mother.

My Grandma has a real problem dealing with lint, hair, strings, and little things that fall on the floor. She is a lint-freakin-picker and she is not ashamed to do it anytime, anywhere. She can out-pick me, she can out-pick you, if pickin-lint was a competition, she’d win the purple ribbon every year.
Grandma was having a bad day both mentally and physically. Everything was especially hard for her since she had recently experienced a TIA (mini-stroke) that was causing weakness on her left side.
She was tiring very easily and it was mid-afternoon when she started feeling sorry for herself. I could hear her electric chair humming on the baby monitor accompanied by her huffing and puffing. She had woken from a nap and had to use the bathroom for the umpteenth time that day. The prospect of it was daunting for her. It was daunting for me as well.
She hadn’t called me to help her yet but I was on my way, as I rounded the corner to the room she suddenly started raging at her infirmity. She started banging her hand on her knee and declaring quite passionately over and over again that “She hated herself”. This was pretty alarming to me and I tried to calm her as best I could. I hugged her and hugged her before putting her into her wheelchair and moving her the 10 feet to the bathroom door. She was better but still pouting as she took the throne.
At this point in her care, she was still able to tend to her potty and clean up, so I gave her some privacy. Since she was a fall risk we never shut the door and I was around the corner sitting on the couch waiting.
I could hear some noises coming from the bathroom and I started thinking that something may be amiss…as I was getting up from my perch--I could clearly hear Grandma say “I HATE you! YOU take that! I’m done with YOU!”
I get to the bathroom and from my vantage point I see my Grandmother with a plastic leg shaver in a position that looks like she was aiming for her own wrist. At this point I’m completely out of my mind and screamed “GRANDMA! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?”
Grandma looked at me with surprise, pulled her hand away from under the razor and said quite defiantly…”I’m trying to cut this string off my panties.”
I helped her with her mission. Then I took every sharp object from that room.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that point. I cried then, but I can laugh now. She still freaks out over strings on her panties. She did it yesterday which reminded me to share the story.

Grandma is having a real bad day. She is having trouble finding words to express what she wants, and when she isn't trying to make herself clear, stares blankly. Her face isn't droopy, she isn't shaking, but she is clearly off her game.
Mom said she was just pointing at a book, and was struggling to say "hand me my pillow." The pillow was already on her lap.
We're on alert...looks like another TIA, but it is too soon to be sure.
So sorry, and hang in there.:)

Christina do you have any websites where I could get some ideas on how to do col's hair? She likes to wear it long.....but I think that time has passed. Her bangs hang to her eyes and are stick straight, she likes curls in the rest of it, but she thinks when you get a perm you have to "set" the perm with hot rollers or it will fall out. Told hubby the day she gets her new do he has to make the hot rollers disappear. And I found a curling iron that will also have to go. I want her to have something easy to take care of that she can just moisten with her fingers and fluff out. She has no clue about modern perms....she is still stuck in the Toni days with the tiny little pink perm rods.
Haven't gone downstairs to gamble yet today....had coffee, now sipping on iced tea...had a fruit tartlet for breakfast that was smothered in blueberries, strawberries, kiwi, raspberries and mandarin oranges, cream under with a very thin layer of chocolate and a perfect flaky crust.....oh my it was good. It has just been terrific to sit and read without being interrupted, or play on the computer and watch hubby napping. Going to stop at the City Market tomorrow and stock up on fresh veggies and fruit and then back to the grind.
I had a thought today and if anyone knows anything about insurance I would appreciate some thoughts.....col has a BC policy that she automatically got when she retired from the Federal Government...premiums paid for, etc. I wonder if it might have some type of "rider" for caregiving or long term care. I guess I will have to call them and go through all the hassle of sending copies of the POA so they will talk with me...but what a lifesaver for her and me if I could get someone to come in occasionally and give me a break and have her insurance cover the charges.
Hubby still napping and while I am surfing I'm watching an NCIS marathon.......life is hard today!
