Find Care & Housing
First, you have to know what you will need. Scooters and electric wheelchairs are paid by Medicare but have to be medically necessary. Shower chairs are not covered by Medicare but some private insurances do. Also those with OTC cards. The hospital may order things you may need. If you have inhome therapy, they may order what you need. Same thing if you go to rehab.

Caringwife suggests a toilet highriser. I suggest a commode. They can fit right over a toilet. There are splashguards you can get to replace tge bucket. Legs can be adjusted and give you stability. And you have the arms to help you get up.

You can go on Craigs list to see what equipment is for sale. On Facebook there are local Freecycle pages.

Well, it depends what kind of surgery you are having.
Medicare will typically pay for necessary durable medical equipment ordered by a doctor or physical therapist, who will do an assessment to determine what equipment is needed.

A manual wheelchair or walker can help you get around safely, if you have use of legs, but are weak or healing.
Consider a raised toilet seat with arms to help with getting on and off the toilet,
And a shower chair. If possible, have grab bars installed at the toilet and shower.

Call you area agency on aging for affordable resources. Try looking online, such as NextDoor or Facebook Marketplace for items sold secondhand. There is typically a search bar near the top of the page to type in what you are looking for.

In my community, there is a lending closet for durable medical equipment. People can get equipment free of charge for a limited time.
