For obvious reasons, I've let doing my taxes go til this weekend

I only got a laptop a couple of years ago to run tax software and it sits in the closet the rest of the year

Last year, I had no trouble but tonight, it won't let me sign in and won't let me send email and supposedly an update to take an hour has been running for at least three and is 96% done

The Microsoft website is a joke

I'm ready to cry

MsMadge,
My taxes are on hold until the last minute too.
When I asked dH to stand by, make copies, download the right forms, he rolled his eyes and just laughed at me.
Married, filing s e p a r a t e ly? Cutting my nose off to spite my face?

Are you trying to do both your taxes and your Mom's? I am thinking you are able to do this. There is the library, push print.

I already cried.

Veronica, could your attorney help you out with this? I have heard of this type of thing before. My Mom and a partner had property and the sewer dept. gave them a tough time for a long time. I am not sure how it was finally resolved, but I remember an attorney was consulted.
Evermore, If I were given the choice of a short trip to Florida or dental work, the teeth would win out! They will be with you a lot longer than the trip. Florida just doesn't seem as fun as it used to be, everyone seems to be going there so there are traffic issues etc.
MsMadge, much luck with the taxes....I dread tax season each year. Hope you can get it done and then forget about it!
Everybody, hope you have a better day and keep strong.

Hubby had a meltdown yesterday because MIL is putting the guilts on him for not changing a lightbulb he did change a couple weeks ago...I told him he cannot internalize these things and hurt his own health, because her accusations could get a whole lot worse as time goes on.

Veronica, my SIL's husband represents a large water company. One Sunday he was telling us about a court appearance coming up that week. We sat and listened in appalled fascination to how he planned to explain to the nice judge that the water company had indeed allowed five houses to be flooded with raw sewage because that was preferable to risking a much larger development downstream, and they didn't feel it was fair that they should be asked to pay more compensation than they already had.

No one said anything for an interval, until my ex commented: "not exactly on the side of the angels, then."

The next case involved a mansion block of six apartments. One top floor apartment belonged to a lady who had lived there since the end of WW2. Now old and frail, she wished to install, at her own expense, a discreet stairlift so that she wouldn't have to move. The other residents objected to the installation and sought an injunction to prevent it.

We all chimed in that it was very selfish and a crying shame and not at all community spirited and how dreadful.

Unfortunately, BIL was not representing the poor little old lady.

But he's such a nice man himself! I suppose somebody's got to stand up for big guy..?

Cwillie,
As best I can tell from searching on my iPad is that maybe mcafee virus protection is keeping Windows 10 from working correctly

Last April 1, 2017, I subscribed to mcafee, and that was the last time email was updated

A $40 renewal fee appeared on my credit card this month for mcafee, so I hope I can turn the auto renewal off and get it off the laptop otherwise I'm loathe to take it anywhere to troubleshoot as my taxes are on the hard drive

There's complaints everywhere on the internet about Windows 10 updates not downloading

To be fair, if the laptop sat unused for a year it would have been trying to do a huge update all at once. I assume you already tried a hard reboot?
(I'm definitely NOT an expert)

Haven't done my income taxes, either. Does downloading Turbotax count? Ok, I know, I need to add figures into the software :P

Just don't feel like doing it. I just find so many other things to do, like spending all afternoon on Aging Care forum. Much more interesting.

My late Dad's CPA is still working on my Dad's taxes. Dad passed late 2016 and his estate is still in Probate, so nothing has been distributed. So there is still income [dividends, interest] coming in under his EID # [given in place of social security # when there is a death and probate is required].

I've done taxes for so many people already this year - everyone except my own. I need to get them done this week...I know....and was supposed to do it today, but had to go over taxes for a family member one more time to make sure the figures were correct. Gotta love when a licensed investment advisor neglects to tell their client that only having 10% withheld from an early distribution from a retirement account is *not* enough, and that there will be additional tax due when their taxes are filed....resulting in them owing money instead of getting a refund. Average Joe doesn't have any idea how much they should have withheld - that's what the dang advisor is there for!
Makes me mad.

I seem to be the family tax person. I filed them for my parents for about 10 years, have done my siblings' and their kids', my own kids and this year, one of my kids' neighbors had me do theirs. At least the neighbor offered to pay me to do it.

Middle nephew went to H&R Block this year, he's only got simple 2 slips to enter so it took less the 20 minutes - most of that just the basic profile - then the guy said it would be $140 + tax and nephew said no way... apparently you don't have to pay if they don't file. He brought his taxes to my place and I walked him through the Turbo Tax program, hopefully next year he'll be able to figure it out all on his own.

Got hubs here, the helpme guru.
I read your issue with the computer to him.

Basically, he is giving me a lecture, and has dug himself into a hole.

It goes like this: Next time, blah blah, blah.....
And, "It is 96% done, just wait!".

If it is not up and running by now, we will be back from the store by 5 p.m.

You can ask here, and I will get his answer. This will be informative f o r me because I need to know if he has lost ALL expertise. Is this too lame? Maybe you don't have time.
That is okay.

Yes, take McAfee off of windows, you are correct, it is interfering.

You are able to enable Windows Defender that comes with Windows? Updates, and patches hubs says.

Hi Send
Thanks hubs for his advice

Since I was up til 3 am waiting for it to finish I just shut it down

Not much sleep as then the house alarm went off early in the morning

I've been tending to mom today and this evening so haven't looked at the laptop today

but my plan is to uninstall mcafee and use defender and try to update windows again

If that doesn't work then I'll delete my tax files and take it in and pay someone to fix it

If need be I'll file for an extension and send a check to the state

Ok, I know you've got this! Phew! I was just the messenger, and had no idea what hubs was saying! Lol.

You know the old fable about the cobbler's family had no shoes? Well, it is like that here when it comes to computers. I get nothing, but hubs likes to help others, and will occasionally help someone that I asked him to. I am sure he would walk you through any questions you may encounter as you do this, but you seem smarter than most he has helped. The terminology-at least you've got that down.

I am still at the stuck stage of, "you know, that machine thingy" Lol.

Take deep breaths, do your taxes!

CM, thanks for the observation about MIL's kitchen light...I am wondering the same thing. MIL is blaming it on the cheap light bulbs she had previously bought. I will mention the possibility to Hubby.
Ugh, April...this year a neverending Winter and always the dreaded taxes. It is also ant spraying month but that may come late this year because of the long Winter. Also...April is mammogram month. Not much fun during April...

I have graduation parties to plan. Two girls graduating from kindergarten. Two high school parties both girls. Two 8th grade boys and they want their party together. Four college parties all boys. One medical school - boy. Plus my son is getting his PhD in early June. Even though his school is in Oregon, he wants his party in Maine in July when he comes back from his research expedition in the Artic Circle (global warming study). A few of their mother's are helping. Wish I could have one giant party for all of them - buy a 80 or 90 pizzas and call it done. My real whine is having to sit thru all of those boring graduation speeches.

I was going to suggest one big party Becky but you already thought of that.
Take some music to the graduations and just put your earphones in. The only graduates that will be able to see you are the kindergarteners, but that one will be short anyway because the little fidgets will get going.

Don't get sick Cwillie! Rootin' for you! Hot chicken noodle soup for dinner?

Just came in from outside, temp is 92° F @ 4 p.m.! It was hot in the sun for just one hour.
Got nauseated, came indoors immediately, black and brown throbbing blobs before my eyes, legs weak, heart pounding...headache now......get cool immediately, drink water and juice.  Ice packs in 3 places.
Heat frustration, big time.

I did have chicken soup for supper, from a can but I added extra veggies and a little curry powder, not bad.

I've just checked my weather WunderMap, I see you are hoarding all the heat from across Canada and the USA, pass it along so you can cool off and the rest of us can warm up a little. Or take a little road trip, temps around San Francisco are in the mid 70's, nice.

That curry powder might help warm you Cwillie. We just got some Tumeric at Costco today, but it is in capsules, I take it (aka Curcumin) for pain.
If I was smart, efficient, and n o r m a l , I would have filed my taxes and we would be gone in the car! That is always the recommended action when things get this hard.
Just a little one day break helps. But now, there is all this great food in the fridge and freezer.

Also, not sure I can drive that far right now.  It would take me 2 days!

I really hate really early morning shifts. Not a serious whine, but I wonder why my horoscope always contradicts...like it says "you are doing well financially but don't spend any money or you will regret it". Or "you are very attractive socially now...but you are accident prone so stay in the house", or"life is like a wonderful banquet under these stars...but your elbows will cease to bend so you can't eat the food".... I should stop reading the horoscopes for any kind of diversion...what is the point!!?
