I would read my boss's horoscope so I can tell what type of day it will be in the office.... of course by the time I get to the office I've totally forgotten what it had said :P

One thing that was interesting, not long ago I had a bunch of friends and we all were born under the sign of "cancer", it was amazing how much we were alike in the way we think and how shy we all were :) We all were pigeon-toed as kids.

Then I was thinking, when does one get the horoscope sign? At conception plus 9 months? If at conception what if a person was born a month early? I tend to over-think things like that, making me wonder if horoscopes are for real or not.

I left the louvre windows open today not realizing we were having strong winds - bathrooms were covered in dirt when I got home -
Two days ago it was 97 degrees
The entry doors are still stuck from the wet weather last month

Remember back when typewriters had a symbol for "degrees" and "cents" on the keyboard? Guess one can say the current computer keyboard doesn't make sense anymore :P

FF - that's what alt-codes are for. :-)

On a computer keyboard, you can use the following (hold the Alt key down while entering the number code - don't type the dash, just hold down Alt and enter the numbers):

alt-0162 = ¢
alt-248 = ° (degree sign) so you can type 82°

there are many others....

alt-137 = ë
alt-0169 = ©
alt-171 = ½
alt-172 = ¼
alt-14 = ♫
alt-15 = ☼
alt-11 = ♂
alt-12 = ♀
alt-24 = ↑
alt-25 = ↓
alt-26 = →
alt-27 = ←

If you want to find the whole list, just Google "alt codes". :-)

Speaking of weather....

We're in the path of the massive winter storm that is hitting this weekend. I'm in the "ice belt" that is going to cross over most of my state. North of that, heavy snow (like up to 20"), south of the ice belt, heavy rain / flooding / possible tornadoes. For us, it's up to 1" of ice, 2" of snow/sleet mix, high winds, expected power outages, downed trees/limbs, and travel not advised for the next 2 days. Going to be interesting for the next couple of days.

My name has the Spanish ñ on it. I had to google it to find out how to print it like that. Once I was able to spell my full name using the ñ, I copied and pasted my name to my email signature. When I'm typing a letter to be printed or faxed, I just open one of my emails and copy/paste my name. Too lazy to memorize or google again how to do it... Hold the 'alt' key down while typing the numbers 164.

MsMadge, sorry, I'm terrible with computers. I spent this afternoon trying to renew my Microsoft Office Home. It's expiring in May 11th. I tried to purchase/download the Personal. Went to cart, then suddenly disappears. Detail says that I need to find a store in my area. Uhm... we're a small island in the middle of the Pacific. Nearest island would be 7 1/2 hr flight to Hawaii. I mean, this is an ONLINE purchase. Why the heck do I need to seek a Microsoft store in my area???? Microsoft is suppose to be a BIG company. Don't they have a 24/7 customer service? Nope. I must contact a store near my area... I tried googling Microsoft with my island's name. Found it. I then made sure it kept showing my island's name on the browser while I hit 'purchase and download.' It immediately went to the cart .. and disappeared! Yep, the browser is still showing my island's name. Ugh!! ... So, What Time does their Microsoft Store Open???? Can't believe the recording doesn't even mention the hours and what standard time it is. Wow... That means calling tonight at midnight, except it will be US mainland Sunday. Does Microsoft stores open on Sundays? My best bet is to call on my Tuesday midnight to reach your Monday.

So, MsMadge, I would be hopeless in giving you advise. Computers are so way beyond me... I'm intimidated by it...

Not sure if Microsoft stores are open on Sunday, Book - is renewing each year cheaper than outright purchase?

MsMadge, I don't know. When I had my old laptop, I never had to renew the Office. Then it crashed. I bought a new laptop and bought the box of Microsoft Office. BIL downloaded it into my laptop last year. This year, I got an email from Microsoft that my Office is expiring. I tried purchasing. I tried renewing. No matter what I do, it's not working. I will check tomorrow with some of the computer stores if they sell that box of Microsoft Office. It'll be more expensive than purchasing it online.

I'm trying not to rely on BIL because fave sis just told me that he's applied for a position in the US Mainland. If they approve his application, he will be leaving this summer. She will be moving with him after she retires from work in March 2019. I have to learn to do these computer stuff on my own because he will no longer be here to troubleshoot it. Her nurse daughter and family are hoping to move to the states, too.

I know that Microsoft has moved to a "subscription" model more than 1-time purchase model for their Office suite. I think you can still get 1 time purchase, but Microsoft has been pushing the subscription, for obvious reasons because it's more money long run for them.

I have this issue even though I use Mac computer, that I have to subscribe and download Office. It's a pain. I do recall going through a few different problems with the download and eventually had to contact support to get some things straightened out.

MsMadge, why do we file by certified mail? Even if there is no money enclosed?

I learned the hard way why we file certified mail. They will not believe that you mailed it to them if you don't if they loose it or it gets lost in the mail.

My mother had not filed her taxes in several years and was in deep trouble with the IRS when I got involved. It took the CPA forever to get the return done. I mailed it in uncertified only later to learn that the IRS claimed they had not gotten her return and were going to take over her money for what they thought she owed them. They gave us a deadline to have it in by. The CPA made a copy of his work. I signed it as her DPOA and we faxed it in.

I never made that mistake again. She did not end up owing them what they thought and they did not take over her money which was needed to pay the nursing home. Since then, I mail my own return in certified with proof of reception included.

I still mail paper copies to the IRS and to the State. Years ago I use to do Certified, but now I use large envelopes where the papers lay flat, I figure an envelope that size usually doesn't get lost.... [keeping fingers crossed].

What I find unfair is that my house was finally paid in full in 2017, and this year for Income Tax I couldn't itemize the donations I send out, of which there are many. This year I had to use standard deductions :( Will be pouting for awhile.

Can someone confirm the IRS address to mail the Federal 1040 A with -0- taxes due from California, L.A. County?
Dept. of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Fresno, CA 93888-0015

I know dH was wrong when he looked it up, and said "Butterfield Way".
Fresno sounds right. Dept. of Treasury sounds off, as no money is enclosed?

Thanks, nearing the end, you all have been so nice with the reminders!

I am on the committee for a doctoral student. He is completing his dissertation and preparing for his oral exams. His dissertation is on money and retirement and long term care. He has been involved in a study of 66-68 yr olds and how much they have saved for retirement. He surveyed over 5000 people from various areas in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. He has compiled all of his numbers and has completed various statistical indices. I was appalled at how little people have saved for retirement. Forty-three % have no savings and no pension - national average is 31%. Sixty one percent have mortgages on their homes. This is about the same as national average. When asked how they planned to pay for long term care (AL or NH) they said the government would take care of them. He did about 500 personal interviews. He said the attitudes were very nonchalant about the situation. I couldn't believe his results. I think we're up the creek if there is this little planning going on. His supervising professor said that doing the interviews he wanted to reach across the table and shake the people up.
