I read everything all of you write about your mothers, fathers and other loved ones. It is just so sad. I’m so sorry they have or had to go thru these illnesses; and for you because of the losses you’ve had or have to face in the future.

John Milton wrote:
"When I consider how my light is spent
Ere half my days in this dark world and wide,
And that one talent which is death to hide
Lodg'd with me useless, though my soul more bent
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest he returning chide;
"Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?"
I fondly ask. But Patience to prevent
That murmur, soon replies: "God doth not need
Either man's work or his own gifts; who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed
And post o'er land and ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait."

I think we have to name you UnluckyLu for today, then. That stinks. :-( Hoping you have or can find something to manage the pain well so you won't be uncomfortable.  Ice packs, maybe, and some prescription-grade pain relievers, perhaps.

So, in conclusion, the injury was preceded by doing strenuous caregiving by a loving caregiver who just cannot say NO.

cwillie, My Mom did linger with a few of these symptoms for years, then most of the symptoms for nearly 2 years bedridden in my home on hospice, catheters etc. I don't know how they hang on but something must keep them going. It was the hardest time of my life seeing her this way.

I'm amazed at all of you who managed to keep your mothers at home until the end, it boggles the mind how difficult that had to be. This dying of age and disability is nothing like dying of cancer or some other terminal disease, it stretches on much too long with no clear beginning or end point.

So, I caught the morning RN in a chatty mood and asked how mom is doing. She's stable. Her weight is OK so she obviously must be eating enough, she nods yes or no and speaks a word or two. She said they've seen people go on like that for years. Yikes.

CW it stretches on so that when the end finally comes you meet it with shocked disbelief. Or that's what I thought, anyway. I genuinely thought she would get better (again). I must have been out of my mind - no way was she going to get better. Or want to, probably.

Speaking of which - what was the RN thinking as the words came out of her mouth? How are you supposed to respond to that? What sort of years is she promising, here?

It would have been a lot better if she'd stuck to how well and content your mother is *today*. Which really is a comforting thought.

cw - scary isn't it.? In some ways it was, can't say good, but a little relief, mixed with the sadness, that mother's disease has progressed. Vasc dementia goes downwards in steps and she has been stable for a while. I knew the next step would see a significant change towards the end. One can only hope that they do not linger much longer. However the last step lasted a couple of years so...

I think the end point will be clear.

I think of it more as threatening than promising CM. And what I really think she was saying was that she has no more of a clue than I do.

Lu,
Sorry to hear about your ankle. Keep off of it as much as you can so it can heal well.

Now's the time to call in favors from those who "owe" you. Anything to keep the weight off of it.

I sprained my ankle once and they casted it! Hey, I thought casts were only for breaks and fractures. No, says the orthopedist, a bad sprain is treated the same as a break. Oh joy!

That was a pain in the neck for 6 weeks. Thank God for shower sleeves for casts.

Hope you didn't have to
have one.

I'm amazed at how long some poor souls linger but then others are gone in a blink

The Viking is nearing 95 - occasionally she will ask if she's dead ? Not that she's asking to die just saying that something is wrong

My observation is that as long as they have interest in food they keep going - she's looking forward to breakfast

I was so happy that it was Friday and was leaving work before the sun had set- only to get to the underground parking which is very expensive to find my car had been vandalized - some creep ripped off all the molding from all four doors

I'm sure it will be several hundred to replace and building management will deny responsibility

UH???

FFS, MsMadge. Do you think it might have been someone looking for a way to break in?

Doesn't this high end parking facility have CCTV? If not, then bollocks to it - they ARE responsible.

Harvey Keitel - who must be terribly short of money for some reason - is currently reprising his Winston Wolf character for a UK insurer's TV ad campaign; and yours is exactly the kind of scenario they cover. Will your insurers pick this up?

Are you all a Twitter with the royal nuptials about to take place?

Not sure what my deductible is but a coworker mentioned that she's seen more security in the garage lately so this probably isn't an isolated incident - doesn't make me feel too safe given how late I work and I park 4 levels underground

The irony is I generally leave my car unlocked in the driveway at home and this happens in a secure structure

I plan to get an estimate tomorrow from the dealer - expect it to be in the $400 range - I need to place a good exotic bet on the Preakness tomorrow which is expecting thunderstorms

MsMadge, that's so sad about your car. That's extra expenses that you really don't need. The good news - at least they didn't break the window. Or the windshield. Or take your tires. Hmmm.. I wouldn't have thought of them taking the molding out so that they can break in.

Here on island, all the underground parkings or all the mall's parking lots have those signs that say that they're not responsible for your vehicle or any damages or stolen items while you park in their parking lot. They make sure to display it prominently. You can't sue them because they already warned you.

They ran an interview with some people partying in Santa Monica a couple of hours ago - what time is it there, about three or four in the morning?!

Truth be told although I am a great admirer of the couple themselves I'm the world's most useless celebrity watcher, rarely have a clue who's who; but there's no getting away from the event over here and to be honest you might as well throw yourself into the spirit of it or you just look Scrooge-like. It's like the Oscars only by daylight and without the restrained sophistication.

Phew! They've just popped out to sign the register so we're getting a nice 'cello recital while we're waiting.

Sniffle sniffle it was just *lovely*.

(If Prince Philip were my 96 year old granddad who had a total hip replacement last month I really, really would have wanted him to use a wheelchair, just to be on the safe side. But evidently nobody dared suggest it to him, and I can't blame them.)

The cellist is wearing colorful design socks. He’s not wearing a plain black or navy blue socks.... I wear similar ones but ankle high. The first time I wore those colorful design socks to work, my boss walked in, stopped briefly and stared at it. Socks didn’t match my outfit but I liked the colors.
