Vikings drink a lot of coffee

Not all of them, Madge. Causes gastric problems with me. One latte, unflavored, for me most Saturday mornings. Lindsborg, Kansas best traditional Swedish coffee shop there and many other things Swedish (some other Scandinavian things) Blacksmith Coffee and Roastery, if you are ever in the area you MUST stop and check it out! Miss it. Lindsborg is Little Sweden.

I am Scandinavian too. I have never heard of Lindsborg, Kansas...sounds interesting and I would check it out if I ever get over that way! I love traditional coffee shops.
I don't have panic attacks anymore but did when I was younger. The caffeine connection makes sense but try getting most people to give up their coffee...said as I go to the kitchen for more.....I have cut down to half a pot in the morning....

I make terrible hot coffee - whether by drip or instant. When I eat out for breakfast at a restaurant, I would order hot coffee. And then dump 2 of those small capful of milk and 2 sugars. Perfect. .. For home, I just drink a small can of Mr.Brown Ice Coffee. Before drinking it, I put it in the freezer to get super cold. Then, when it's like icy inside, I take it out, shake it, and drink it with a small straw. Yummm… I have tried those fancy ice coffees (even Starbucks in Hawaii) but it was not to my liking. Way too sweet.

You know, I get headaches daily for weeks, months. I wake up at 4 or 5 am with a pounding headache. So, every morning, a coffee and then Excedrin to help me to think in the mornings. By lunch time, the pounding headache is back. Instead of taking Excedrin several times a day for weeks/months, I'm back to sipping that one can of Pepsi (it has caffeine) throughout the afternoon. The pounding headache hits, sip, and the pain goes down. Sometimes, depending how bad the headache is, by the time I leave work, I either have a still full Pepsi or an empty one or a half full one. But it works as a substitute from the Excedrin. FYI....

Book, I find it interesting that the Pepsi works on your headaches. What I would want to know is - does a Diet Pepsi work as well on the headache? Is it just the caffeine that's alleviating the headache or is it some of the sugar as well?

Report

Book, I know that caffeine withdrawal can cause headaches, long term use of painkillers can also cause rebound headaches. It doesn't sound as though you are getting an excessive amount of either one but you do tend to be really sensitive to a lot of things, it might be worth trying to cut back a little.

Phenomenally annoyed, no, angry with a friend. We had planned to get together this afternoon. He had said that he would text me a time so we could decide what to do. I simply asked him through text about what he would like to do and what time at 10 this morning. Didn't get any response until 2:30 this afternoon saying that he was sick and slept until shortly before 2:30. I had said that he was not sick enough to spend a couple hours on Facebook while I had chatted with another friend on Facebook. He hasn't responded because he was caught in a lie.

With friends like that, who needs enemies.?

Cwillie, I brought up my ice coffee with my doctor. He actually chuckled. He said that one small can of coffee (not black coffee) is fine. That's just one cup of coffee in the morning. He said that I don't need to cut it out of my life. ... He did say that I need to change my late night snacking to something with protein, no sugar. …. As for the Pepsi, it's only when I get these terrible pounding headaches. I have to be very careful. I get easily addicted to Pepsi. Twice in my life, I fell off the bandwagon. It was awful trying to get off it. It's worse than coffee. With the Pepsi, all afternoon at work, all I want is Pepsi, Pepsi, Pepsi for weeks as I try to get off it. Because of this, I only drink Pepsi if my head is pounding terribly that I cannot think.

Yep about the rebound from daily use (several times a day) with the painkiller!! That's why I now sparingly use it. But I refuse to take leave from work just to go home and be miserable. I might as well be miserable at work and get paid for it.

Evermore, I don't know what gets into some people that we call friends. My old friend from 8th grade and I are still in touch though she keeps moving around from "paradise to paradise" ...each place they go is the best place on Earth, the old place, as well as where I live get put down. We exchange photos and letters once in awhile and when I sent a photo years ago of me on vacation, and her response was "What a porker!" as I had put on a few pounds. I would NEVER say anything so hurtful to anyone, let alone someone who is supposed to be a friend! Needless to say, I sent no more photos. Sometimes I think I should have just stopped cold after that filterless response....

My whine moment today...really kind of minor in the scheme of things, but still frustrating.

Got a quote on fixing one of the windows at mom's house. Sister and the guy she had living with her busted it out and tore up the fence the week before last after we moved some of mom's things to her new place. See my previous posts for all of the drama we've had with this saga, that sis keeps escalating...

Anyway, the window company was supposed to call and let me know what time they were coming, they said it would be sometime between 10 and noon. I hadn't heard from them so I called, and they had already been out there and measured, and will call back with a quote, but since window glass has to be custom ordered, and them being backed up, it will be about 21 business days before they can get back out to replace it. Is this normal?

I guess in the meantime hubby and I will put some thick plastic over it to keep rain, bugs, etc out. Was just hoping to get it fixed soon, as it's already been almost 2 weeks.

Am sitting here in tears as I am sterilize and wash everything on the bed once again. I sleep on the sofa every night now and I have spent hundreds of dollars for special mattress pads and waterproof sheets and washable pads and other padding and special wash sanitizer and detergent. 4 loads today. I am in pain and I just don't know how I will find the strength to do the work and the care needed today. I have asked family for help and I have tried to gently let his kids know that what the see when they visit for Father's Day is not what I experience all day every day and all night. The tears just flow.

FrazzledMama...think I would take the bill/quote to sister and her boyfriend and tell them you want the money for the repairs. They are the ones that should be paying for the repairs...not y'all. Not sure what area y'all live in but might be worth getting several estimates. and info on lag time for them to repair.

Katie22... I would drop that so called friend like a hot potato. No matter how long you have known her true friends don't say that to (or about) friends...period. That is no friend. My heart hurts for you. Don't let her get to you. Friends build you up and care about you.. sounds like the only thing this "friend" cares about is herself.

Oh Katie, you have spoken of this So Called Friend before, and it NEVER been good! There are some people in this world who can Never get the Friend thing down, who only know how to beat people down, and never build them up, andShe is that kind of person.

I would drop kick that So Called friendship as fast as I could throw it! Just remember, you've got Loads of Friends here, that truly Love and Appreciate You, so Never Forget That!

She1934, time to set up a family meeting with your hubby not being at the meeting. Sounds like it is time for major changes, such as moving hubby to Assisted Living/Memory Care if he is able to budget for the cost.

We don't want to see you as one of the 40% of family caregivers who passes away leaving behind your love one.

Why?

Why are the admins changing the order of the posts?

My comment was to Katie about friends. If my post comes before her comment about her friend, how does that make sense? Am I confused?

Oh yeah. I was confused. My comment was after Evermore' s comment, also about a friend. But it fit for Katie' s comment about her ex-friend too. Sorry to confuse anyone.
I can relate, the bragging vacation photos friend, and comments like: "I don't know why you need to eat that much butter" while dining out, our last ever lunch together. She actually had a weight problem, wants to convert everyone to be like her.

I must be delirious from the heatwave here in California.

ABB, diet sodas are not good to drink. I forgot why. But I've read about it from various sources and even heard about it on the national radio. You may want to do your own research. I never did like the taste of those diet sodas. Pepsi has 39% caffeine. I googled and found that diet Pepsi has 37%. Figures came from lab tests and not from the Pepsi manufacturer.

Thanks everyone for your comments. This "friend" always had a competitive relationship with her brother, and after the care of her mother, and using her mother's assets to pay for 24/7 care to come in for the "friends" mother so "friend" could travel to another state to pick out doorknobs for a house they were building, the brother sued her and they are now estranged...she has turned very self centered over the years....

Well folks, I think it's time for me to take my leave of the site. I've gone on hiatus in the past, but I think I'm pretty much done with the site now. I'm no longer a caregiver, and while I appreciate all the support and advice I received while I needed it, and enjoyed giving advice and helping others, the site has just turned into a big mess during this "upgrade", and it doesn't appear to be getting better.

The recent changes are just too annoying and troublesome to deal with, and now the admins have reinstated previously deleted posts by a certain member that are just outright mean and hateful towards other members.

Someone posts nasty, hate-filled posts to create drama - the admins either gut the post or delete it - only to reinstate it a day or so later?? Whether it's a glitch or intentional, it's just getting to be too much hassle to deal with. We as members are expected to help "police" the site by reporting inappropriate or offensive content - but our efforts are completely negated by whatever is going on behind the scenes on the site.

I appreciate everyone here, and have the utmost respect for you and the difficult caregiving job you're doing or have done in the past. I'm right there with you and I know what you're going through or have been through. Please keep a positive thought in mind for yourself today, find some joy in the little things in life, and remember that your caregiving journey will not last forever - there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Take care. :-)

Diet sodas are bad because the sweeteners are said to be a neurotoxin.
The carbonated beverages are said to remove calcium from your bones.

That's what I had read, and gave up sodas.

Hi Susan and Sendhelp…
Susan... hate to see you go, but if you do my wish for you is that you have a happy life filled with lots of love, joy and happiness. Please check in with us and let us know how you are doing.

Sendhelp...We drink very little diet sodas. When I do drink diet soda I drink Diet 7-up as it is caffeine free, but I drink more water and coffee than anything. I did not realize that diet drinks would leach out the calcium in your bones. Thank you for the info. I do not need that to happen. The Dilantin that I was on drained the calcium from my body when I had to take it at age 29 and 31 due to a seizure disorder. I lost all of my teeth due to it.

Interesting about diet soda and calcium...I don't drink it but a friend does drink several each day. I will warn her about this as she has enough health problems as is.

I am sorry to hear someone is being mean on here...I haven't seen the posts, but meaness is one thing we all don't need with all we are going through or went through or both! I hope everyone is hanging in there today. Day at a time and don't forget to appreciate the little stuff.
