Find Care & Housing
Becky,

Big thanks for the understanding of the craziness.

intead of paying rent, I pay for groceries and medical supplies. Not great, but I survive.

Rbonuc, I've found that not watching the news or cops shows, etc. helps my mom too. She struggles with paranoia and auditory hallucinations so it's rather triggering for her. When she was living here with me, I tried not to watch anything that would potentially upset her.

It helps me too, actually, to stay in a more positive frame of mind to turn the news off. I don't watch it too much anymore, just mainly read the highlights of what's going on locally and around the world. But listening to it every day is too much negativity for me. On the other hand, I love the Game Show Network! I like watching the old reruns of Family Feud, the Newlywed Game, etc.

Mally, I still have a long way to go. Need to qualify for a transplant list which probably won’t happen. May end up with a heart pump at some point. Prayers are always needed and appreciated greatly.

Hello to all. I have been off line for quite a while, especially here, the first thread I posted on.

Well, this a whine thread and although I had a lot of whines, I saw myself whining about the same thing, issues I am proud to say that I am starting to handle better. I had so much turmoil it was hard to post on two threads, and keep up with the posters.

I just dropped in to say hi and send love.

Becky, I really missed out on a lot. My heart goes out to you. I wish you the best. I thought of you when my cousin said ca had spread to lungs and stomach. How you and your brother held your cousin down and all the orderly preparation that took place.
I am hearing more and more people are getting transplants. I think more people are becoming donors and the chances are getting much better. I am glad your trip was so nice.

Rbonuc, I'm not sure what you mean by "Does leaving the general area work for anyone. Like going for a two hour walk." If you are talking about taking your mom to tire her out - there are several in my mom's NH who walk the halls but one lady in particular walks constantly all day long. When she gets physically exhausted she starts to stumble, but she won't stay seated for long, sometimes they even have difficulty getting her to sit through meals. In her mind she's looking for her children and won't be deterred - do you think there is something you mom is seeking?

Now if YOU could leave mom with a sitter and go for a 2 hour hike I think that would help tremendously!

I am not sure if whining will make me feel better or guilty. But, I am so upset with myself, how I do so well with patience and loving words and then sometimes that human emotion takes over and you say something that could be indeed hurtful and then wish you could cut your tongue out because you truly did not mean to be hurtful, just lost strength for a moment. Sometimes our mouth vomits ugly things on those we would never wish to be hurtful too. :(
Well, I do good, fall down, do good fall down, but I believe I just gotta keep getting up and always try to just do better. I just keep praying to do better, it will happen. Thank the Lord for forgiveness.

Becky, You are in my prayers, glad you had a good trip.

Just a minor whine, but the mosquitoes/spiders/ants are really bad here right now. We didn't get much of a freeze last winter, which didn't help the population. Killed a big brown recluse in here earlier. Thankfully, I'm not afraid of spiders, don't like them, but wasps/hornets on the other hand WILL make me go hide in the other room.

Hugs, Smeshque, don't beat yourself up. We've all had times where we've said stuff we regret. I probably put my foot in my mouth more often than not. We get tired. It's part of what makes us human. Get some rest, and be kind to yourself. God loves you very much, you know. :)

Brown Recluse Spider?????!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where do you live? If a brown recluse spider came anywhere near me I'd be packing my bags. :P
(5)
Report

Yes, the brown recluses have been out in droves this year unfortunately. I'm in the south central part of the U.S. We're not "deep south" but at the same time we sometimes don't get enough of the northerly cold in winter to kill out enough of the bugs to prevent them from being a nuisance in the summer.

It's been hot and muggy this year. Very, very humid which makes the heat index higher too.

Hugs, Smeshque. Been there.

Oh dear. Been there more times than I can count, actually. Never seem to learn :(

I read yesterday (in a respectable newspaper) about a man who solved his dry mouth/sore throat/snoring problems by taping his jaw up with Steristrip last thing at night. I'm now wondering if they do an invisible day-time version I could use to stop myself opening my mouth and putting my foot in it.

I know you can't help feeling bad about it, because I've tried. But what about remembering all the incredibly kind, encouraging, positive and helpful things you've said to the same person? I bet you're well in credit!

just got the Viking to bed and I’m sitting here sweating while she looks so comfortable with her comforter pulled half way up

I keep waking up so I figured I may as well get out of bed. IDK, I think it must be niggling background worry over a family gathering next Monday and mom's condition yesterday - she was coughing up tons of crud but the nurse said she had checked her lungs and they were clear. How can they be clear when it sounded like she's drowning?

Well for heaven's sake!

I have been bitten on the boob by a creature, I assume a mosquito. When and how it got in I cannot say, but you'd have thought there must be easier targets. What's wrong with an ankle?
(5)
Report

It's always possible a little critter went down your neck and got trapped in your bra CM and the poor little thing was just fighting back. But then it would probably have bit more than once. (don't ask me how I know😮)

cw - mother gurgles a lot too - mucus she cannot cough up because her coughing muscles are weak. They did an X-ray and it was negative. She doesn't have any infection, Does your mum have a fever?
(2)

Oh, those gurgling episodes are scary especially when mom is too tired to cough and can't follow instructions- she may just parrot me and say cough rather than trying to cough

i have four bug bites - two on each ankle but I don't think they are from mosquitos - big swatches of red
if I didn't sleep with a spider then hoca has some weird bugs lurking around

I had them check mom again this morning - pulse ox levels are good at 95, BP low at 80/60, slight rustling in lower left lung. Nurse faxed the doc and got a script for Ventolin, mom used to use this as needed years ago but couldn't breath deeply enough to get it into her lungs so it was discontinued. I guess it can't hurt to try.

sounds good cwillie. As long as they keep an eye on her, which is what they are doing with mother.

Cwillie
how do they administer the ventolin? Is it a puff ?

mom has gotten some breathing treatments where mist is dispensed through a face mask for about 10 minutes when she’s really having a bad time

She’s been suctioned a couple of times too but it’s harder for the nurses to get an order for that
- I need to ask if dr will allow it PRN
(1)
Report

They don't have it on site yet but I was told they would use a mask and nebulizer, no details about frequency or dosage. I really don't like the way medical issues are handled at the NH, the nurse on duty makes a recommendation to the doc who orders the med without ever seeing her... I've got nothing against RNs but shouldn't it be the doc or at least the nurse practitioner making the recommendation?
(5)
Report

cwillie, It is the RN who recommends because she/he is the one there all the time. Depending on the diagnose and LOC, a doc may not come but once a week or once a month if the patient is on long term care and has been stable continually. The same with the NP.

I thought I could save some money and change my parking spot at work - half the price if I go to the lowest level - 5 underground - I park on 4 usually anyway so I thought what's the difference - well, there is a difference- it's creepy, darker and looks neglected plus I was the only car down there when I left the office at 10 pm 😬
(7)
Report

I finally saw one of the "good" nurses was working this morning and asked a few questions about mom - the ventolin has not arrived yet and is listed to be given as needed (aka never unless I see a problem while I'm there and ask for it). I also found out mom had routine blood work a couple of weeks ago and she's in excellent health 🙄. Today mom is 99, maybe she really will make it to 100.
