Llama,

Thanks! She’s funny. She actually likes the cold weather but not as cold as in Iowa right now.

Here is it minus 28C (-18F) with wind chill down to 40s and 50s in some places. Wicked cold. I almost don't want to put in a grocery order but whoever works there knows what they are facing. Brave souls!

NHWM, wondering if your daughter got out of Iowa ok.

Glad,

Her flight has been delayed but is scheduled to take off. She should arrive in New Orleans around 8:00.

The previous flight that she booked that was going to stop in Chicago was canceled. Her current flight connects in Dallas before landing in Louisiana.

My daughter said, “The weather in Cedar Rapids is about -3 or 4! When I got in the car to drive to the gas station and return it with a full tank I thought my fingers would fall off from the cold!”

She is dressed warmly, gloves, jacket and hat on but it is incredibly cold there.

Glad,

Yeah, that should read Cedar Rapids, not Grand Rapids. That was a typo. I hate autocorrect on my phone! Sometimes I don’t catch the typos before editing time is up.

Great to hear, NHWM. The COLD from this storm has been brutal all across the country. The east coast is to get it on Sunday!

This blast of stormy cold air is certainly making it miserable for many! So many flights have been cancelled or delayed.

My daughter’s friend had to travel for work this week and her flight home was cancelled. She has a three year old and the earliest that she can get back home to her family is the day after Christmas. She’s bummed 🙁.

I am glad that my daughter is past security and is now waiting for her plane to arrive. My daughter’s dog is going to be so happy to see her.

The freezing rain is just starting here in NYC.

The bummer is that middle daughter and her husband tested positive for COVID this am. Their 5 1/2 year is with my ex and she has tested negative.

We are having a big joint family thing (both my and my ex's 20th anniversaries with our 2nd spouses) and all the kids were going to be there. Sigh.

Glad,

Does the heater work well enough in a car in those temps? Does it get warm before arriving to your destination or does the car remain cold?

Here we have the opposite problem. On super hot days, the air conditioning won’t have time to cool off the car before arriving to our destination.

Barb,

So sorry that they got Covid. That’s awful! I hope they recover soon. That really screwed up celebrations!

Happy Anniversary to you and hubby!

Barb -sorry to hear about family having covid. It sure wrecks family get togethers.

need - glad your daughter is close to boarding. Cars warm up at our temps which are much colder than yours. It is a good idea to start the car and let it run for a while to warm up the engine and the interior. To prevent it being stolen you lock the car while it is idling, But, of course, idling is not good for the environment.

Golden,

Okay, I see. I guess if I grew up in the freezing cold I would be acclimated to it but it all sounds so miserable to be living with extreme cold weather temperatures.

People say the same thing about our heat. They hate it if they have never experienced living with hot humid summers.

Hopefully, my daughter’s plane will be able to remain on schedule. Hey, it’s great that it wasn’t canceled like so many other flights were.
(2)
Report

NHWM, yes the car does warm up, like Golden said, many people will allow a car to idle for awhile to make it more comfortable. However, here you can be ticketed for leaving a car running. The Denver area has the largest incidence of stolen cars in the country. It is really BAD!

Here is my whine for the day. It has to do with those white or clear plastic taps that are stapled into clothing by the manufacturer. Ok, I understand why it is done, especially with socks.

This morning I had to get three taps out of each pair of socks that we got as a Christmas gift. Wasn't easy as the socks were those thick fuzzy kinds, thus I had to feel my way to snip and get both sides of the tab.

Suggestion, if someone is giving fuzzy socks to an elder for Christmas, and you know the socks won't be returned, snip out those plastic taps please. It would make life so much easier :) Not easy holding a magnifying glass in one hand, the scissors in the 2nd hand, and the socks in my 3rd hand... oh wait... never-mine, you get the picture.

I usually just run the car while I clean off the snow and scrape the widows.
I thought everyone had a block heater in your part of the world Golden?
(3)
Report

cw - haven't had a block heater in years. I use synthetic oil and it starts with no trouble. My car is in my garage these days, but a car outside not plugged in will start at 35 below with synthetic oil.

Absolutely! My daughter has only recently started to pack a bag properly.

FF,

I wonder sometimes if the manufacturers of products want us to be able to utilize any of our products.

Packaging is such a pain in the butt!

I didn't even think of this yesterday!

Alcohol Works Wonders As A Defroster
Alcohol shows up a couple of times on this list and for good reason. Alcohol naturally has some anti-freezing properties. So, if you ever find yourself locked out of your home or your car because the lock is frozen, then you can use some alcohol to quickly unfreeze it. Alcohol in the form of hand sanitizer works well for this. Just spray some in the keyhole and it should unfreeze any ice inside.

I love watching interesting documentaries about people. I watched one awhile back on scientists who were researching in the Arctic.

Ever wonder how people gear up to go to these places with extreme temperatures? They are brilliant and insane at the same time, right? These researchers are much braver than I could ever be. I am a wuss when it comes to being out in the bitter cold 🥶 !

I have heard that the suicide rate is higher where people are isolated in extreme conditions during long winters. Depression comes into play too. I find it interesting that these places are often the most beautiful places to live.

Since we don’t have four distinct seasons here, I have plumbagos and sasanquas blooming at the same time! Crazy, but that’s how it is here.

I have hardy plants in my yard and they rarely succumb to weather conditions.

Glad,

Carjackings in New Orleans are very bad.

Years ago I would occasionally see someone leaving keys in the car and they would run into the store quickly. That isn’t commonly done nowadays.

Now, thieves pull out a gun at stop signs or traffic lights and take the car.

Occasionally, police will ask people to turn in guns, no questions asked.

Police have determined that a large portion of guns that people reported stolen were because people didn’t lock their cars and the guns were taken from their vehicles. Isn’t that nuts? No common sense whatsoever for people in a high crime city not to lock their doors.

Even here in Nola the weather is frigid. Feels like temperatures are in the teens with the windchill. Brrrrr…

Just saw where the airport is closed in Buffalo, NY. So no one will be traveling to see family!

Everyone will certainly welcome Spring this year!

I wonder how our football team (Saints) will manage playing the Browns! It’s going to be a very chilly game, for sure!

Gosh, we never seem to have a break from the crime in our city. Just saw crime stoppers on our local news asking for help in solving a murder case that happened outside of one of our local grocery stores.
