Good grief, even if your walking speed isn’t enough to crank your heart rate, you still benefit by maintaining strength and stability, improving the delivery of O2, removing cellular waste, dispersing cortisol, burning calories, and the overall good feeling, etc.

Spooky movies with jump scares will elevate your heart rate.

If you subscribe to Disney+, we thoroughly enjoyed Limitless With Chris Hemsworth. The 6 episodes explore ways to improve longevity. Managing stress, temperature shocking, fasting, strength, memory, and, finally, acceptance of aging and the inevitable. Very interesting.

Steps matter greatly!

It’s the difference between someone sitting in soiled diapers waiting to be helped and someone being able to walk to the bathroom on his/her own power.

glad - more is not necessarily better in terms of fitness - whatever fitness is defined as. !0,000 steps would harm me.

stacey - there may be some measurement yr doc is quoting from some research paper that says that, but it is not useful info for the average person.

Exercise of any kind benefits you somewhere. The heart is a muscle. So increasing heart rate means you are exercising your heart. Walking will increase it depending on how fast and long you walk.

cw -totally agree. Any movement is better than no movement.

45 minutes used to be quoted as the time you needed to exercise to get any cardiovascular benefits. i knew it was bs at the time and research since has confirmed that less exercise still gives cv benefits.

It's not all or nothing

It depends what you are trying to accomplish Stacey, people like your doc pi$$ me off because they only discourage people who can't perform to their standards. It's well documented that any activity is better than no activity, and that walking has very similar benefits to running.

And to confuse things even more, now the experts are saying 10,000 steps might be too.much.

Polar, cw and glad, I wondered about that. What I read yesterday and again just now says a step is a step with one foot and a stride is two steps, one with each foot.

"Stride length is the distance covered when you take two steps, one with each foot."

A little googling has informed my that what Glad is describing are strides, not steps. I guess using strides is a newer ploy to differentiate some fitness programs from the myriad others that focus on getting those 10,000 steps.

i have done many steps -- but all my steps lead to my chocolate eggs stash. do they still count as steps?
(3)
Report

Glad, I will have to disagree. I believe that one step is one step, not two steps. If you got pulled over by the police and were asked to take 5 steps forward, you would take 5 steps not 5 sets of 2 steps.

In rehab, if a PT asks a patient to take 10 steps, I imagine that would be 5 R and 5 L. No?

If you don’t mind, I’ll inflict my funny Fitbit tale upon you. Years ago, my husband ordered two. His arrived first and he walked 3800 steps the first day. I have significant knee damage and he expressed concern about the daily 10,000 step goal, figuring I had better work up to it cautiously, very slowly. Did I mention I have 3 kids? Mine arrived. On the first day I said “Oh look, a bird with a banner offers congratulations when you hit 10,000 steps!” as I was in the midst of making dinner. I still had to distribute clean laundry and walk the dogs before bed. Did he look shocked. Heh heh heh.

Withings Move does not count each footfall, nor does Google Fit.

So when I was doing 9,000 steps I was actually doing 18,000! And four miles.
(3)

Don't know where your info comes from but Fitbit definitely counts each footfall as a step, averaging 2000 - 2500 steps per mile.

Glad, I am bummed out to hear that. I have been counting each foot as a step. I haven't been walking as far as I thought. Boohoo :-(. ;-)

I bet, how long does that take you? Do you count both feet touching the ground? I didn't realize that one step is actually the complete movement of both feet.

How far is that?

I don't think it is unsafe. I think they have a firepit as they have fires regularly in the summer and that night there was still snow on the lawns. What I think is probably not allowed is to let it burn unattended, even in an approved firepit.

ETA Just checked out bylaws and backyard fires must be attended. I guess I should contact the bylaws officer.

There probably is permitting required at the very least, Golden. I would be calling the fire department to report, even in the middle of the night. That would nip this problem in the bud, I would think.I

All you would need is a fire, Golden, just as you are getting the house ready for sale!

Such lovely fresh cool air at night and I dare not open my bedroom window. A week or so ago I opened it a crack and woke up in the middle of the night choking and spluttering and my eyes stinging when I got them open.

Checked out back and the neighbour behind me had an open 🔥 fire going at 3 in the morning - unattended. I suspect there is a bylaw against that and I should check it out. The smoke blows straight into the windows on that side of my house. I love having fresh cool air in my bedroom!

And my hospital has announced that as of the 24th we will no longer have to wear masks for normal patient care . hoping that goes well.. several other hospitals in MD have already dropped the requirement.

Eva - not thinking you are an overachiever just an active person. Good for you! Most of us will have to face worse in the future - in ourselves and in our loved ones. Not a happy thought, but that is life. I like Disraeli's "I am prepared for the worst, but hope for the best."

I hope you find some on insurance or even at all.

Yes Pam, understand your frustration
It happened to my husband, his meds are not always avail.
And had to fight, here in Canada, as we were traveling and needs to be approved if you require them before due date.
So as we pay only max $25.00 it became some ridicules amount for portion of it.

I get my allergy medicine on prescription from the pharmacy under my health insurance, for free. Called in the refill today,, seems there is a shortage! My poor pharmacist called to let me know he only has one box, not my 6 and he is trying to find another source. I told him I have enough for a week or so,, he is trying hard! I hate to have to buy it over the counter for about 30$ but if I must I must. Unless they are out too! And this season bad right now. Good luck and heads up to anyone else needing this!

Golden,
An Eva? Makes me laugh, thank you for that, need one now.
No I am not some overachiever, not even close!
But, like many others I did a number on myself, trying to do too much i.e clearing and cleaning basement, and then could hardly do anything for a few days. Pain!
Like many caregivers, I believe all physical activity helps me mentally as well. I am committed to staying strong as who knows what am i going to face in the future?
Actually, I know, I will have to face worse much worse.
