NHWM, sorry to hear your cousin is still having a bad time with this horrible virus. Wishing him the strength he needs to get better.

"NHWM,"

I'm sorry to hear that your cousin is still battling COVID and the struggle to breathe with no immediate signs of improvement.

I hope the hospital doesn't send him home yet again too soon.

What a terrible situation for him to be in and I hope he has good health insurance.

Will continue praying on his behalf.

My cousin texted me just now. He doesn’t get good reception on his cell in the hospital.

He is still fighting Covid, struggling to breathe.

They sent him home with a nebulizer not long ago but he had to call 911 because of chest pain.

With his heart history I am really concerned. Please keep him in your prayers and thoughts.

It's all about the funding, isn't it? Put your money where you mouth is. Enough and well trained and paid staff is what is needed. If you don't have enough staff and well trained staff you won't have protocols followed. I have been following the covid status of the long term care places where I intend to move to and the first outbreak in only one of the seniors facilities in that town has just been announced. I say they are doing pretty well. It shows it is possible.

Golden I understand that a lot of the issues around long term care are systemic but there has been a lot of lip service paid to keeping residents safe but I'm not seeing any evidence of an ability to do anything to halt the spread once covid begins to spread within a facility. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that it is impossible for regular staff to take up the slack when their numbers are diminished due to illness or quarantine and the workload within the home increases due to infection control measures. Repeating that everyone is trying their best and are following all the new protocols just doesn't cut it, there need to be boots on the ground increasing staffing levels and looking with fresh eyes at what is driving the spread.

My personal whine is that I have had to put myself back on the veggie fast. The last CFS/FM flareup included my gut and it wasn't getting better quickly enough for me. But the good news is that it seems to be responding well. I guess I have to be more careful with what I eat and drink. Peppermint tea with ginger in it instead of black coffee or pop.. I know - it's healthier too. I think (hope) I can tolerate a little coffee with lots of milk (dairy free) in it and a little dark chocolate. Good thing I really like roasted veggies and they are easy to prepare. There is something grounding about peeling and slicing rutabagas. 😜

cw - unfortunately you can't undo years of poor and/or neglected standards in months. There is a whole chain of people who have not done their jobs as they should have and it shows the priorities of the governing bodies and individuals. I hope those priorities will change by the next pandemic. I understand and share
your anger.

So I just signed CARP's online petition to fire the provincial minister of long term care. Undoubtedly meaningless. 😞

I just don't know what to say to my GF without causing her more stress because I. am. so. angry!!! I don't have the answer but clearly assurances that they are "following all the guidelines from the health unit" are not cutting it, those in authority need to pull their collective heads out of their azzes and look outside of "approved protocol" at what is going wrong and for new ways to protect the remaining few residents.

Thanks for the update. I'm sorry there hasn't been much improvement - sounds like he has a lot to overcome and will pray that he can.

I agree that there is still much more to learn about COVID and that's what makes it so scary because it affects everyone so, so differently even in seemingly healthy people. What my concern is - is the after effects down the road that they don't know about.

I'm married to bankers so I understand the pressures they work under.

NGI,

Thanks for asking. I continue to pray for him. He’s about the same.

I know that some people bounce back quicker than others. Some don’t have any symptoms.

Unfortunately, he’s not in that group and is like many others who are struggling to get better. Some people take much longer to recover.

I think there is still much more to learn about COVID.

Oh yes, he’s definitely type A. Kind of goes with the territory with investment bankers though.

He only dealt with multi millionaires and at that level, they own you! He had to work insane hours, international dealings at all hours.

Sadly, two heart attacks slowed him down though. His doctor said to him that if he didn’t stop pushing so hard, the next heart attack would most likely kill him.

Then he got hit with COVID. I am truly sorry that he got COVID but I hope this is his wake up call.

Have been thinking about your cousin throughout the day. How is he now that he had to go back to the hospital? I hope they were able to get him a room!

What a terrible thing for him to go through. Very sad that all those years being a Type A has caught up to him.

My whine.... remember a year ago when toilet paper disappeared from the grocery store shelves? Well, now it is ink for our printers !! Guess all those holiday letters ran that ink supply out :) I have to use grayscale for while until the color ink is delivered.

I need to start thinking how the pioneers had lived, and be glad for what I have :)

Hi TG, nice to see you posting again although not so nice that you are still in the trenches. Is there a possibility your father is taking some kind of laxatives that cause these cyclic blowouts? My mom had bowel problems and what you describe sounds similar to when I had to resort to bisacodyl suppositories - explosive diarrhea and an odour that was indescribable. I think if I was confronted with that regularly I'd be tempted to convert his bathroom to a wet room that could just be hosed out.....

Been a long day already. Yesterday Dad was in the first-floor bathroom/ laundry off the kitchen. was in there for a while. I was making dinner and he comes out like everything is fine asking me to log him on for his zoom meeting in an hour. All of a sudden the stench hit me.... Trying to make dinner I went over and it was like a wall. I have been in EMS for 40 years and smelled a lot of bad stuff. This was horrid. He left crap on the toilet, tried to clean it up. Holding my breath and deconning the room took 20 minutes.... The stench was overpowering. What makes someone like that? he hadn't taken in PM meds for a couple of days which has a stool softener in it. About once every 2 weeks he has a blowout on the toilet. which results in me plunging it, Between too much poo and too much paper. Last night my wife and I were in bed and he hit the bathroom again, so the first thing had to decon the room and decon all other surfaces he puts his hands on. His living room is horrid, I decoded his keyboard to his PC and he eats at his desk. I use medical grade wipes. He doesn't care. Mom walked behind him cleaning up. He just walks around like it's nothing, no problem. I get it may be embarrassing but at least say something and not just walk away..... Nothing like doing a clean up first thing in the AM before breakfast.
It's been a long 7 years and not getting better. Just me venting, I have no help from sibs, he's couped up, I get it as I can't let him drive anymore and Covid he can't get out much. I got my first shot last week so trying to keep him from getting sick. Just tired......

Alva,

My cousin was in hospital, sent home, attempted to enter hospital again due to struggling to breathe, sent home again because no rooms available, had to wait for a room.

He’s in remission from colon cancer, two heart surgeries this past year, diabetes, etc.

In his 50’s, type A investment banker used to working 60 - 80 hours a week.

This is a huge wake up call for him.

He’s in a D.C. burb. Lots of Covid cases all over.

So sorry things are going so badly in California. I wish we were all vaccinated already!

NHWM our ambulances in some areas SO Cal and Santa Clara County already basically on triage. Will not, if the recipient doesn't make it through CPR be transporting to hospitals, which have overloaded morgues and cannot spare the time for that. Are asking that there be no calls for anything but true emergency. I think this is lightweight compared to what the 15th of this month will look like.

My cousin is still in the hospital suffering with COVID-19. They are giving him breathing treatments every few hours.

I am hoping that he will be able to beat this.

My daughter is annoyed because her gym membership has been altered. She says she froze the membership because she was paying full price but was only allowed to go once a month.

They are only allowed to workout after scheduling a time slot.

I tried to be as caring as I could be but come on...

I ended up telling her that I was proud of her for complying to Denver’s regulations without complaining but she needs to be patient a little longer because we are in the home stretch.

What else could I have said to her? I did also tell her that she could continue working out at home and it wasn’t worth risking being exposed to COVID.

So the outbreak at our local NH has grown out of control, the latest round of testing has revealed another 15 cases meaning that now 2/3 of the residents in this little facility have it. I stopped by my GF's today and she said her mom is still virus free - she is somewhat comforted that apparently symptoms seem to be fairly mild with most people.

Glad,

I found another one that looks good.

It is shrimp and sausage gumbo by Simply Recipes.

That’s close to how we make it.

Let me know how it turns out.

Hope you feel much better tomorrow.

Glad,

I love andioulle sausage!

There is a recipe online that will work. It’s called Easy Shrimp and Sausage Gumbo by Delish.

My only modification would be to only use half of the canned tomatoes.

My mom never put any tomatoes in, nor did my grandmother.

I have done it with or without tomatoes but never a whole can!

I have used about a tablespoon of tomato paste before but the can tomatoes would work if you prefer.

Add about a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and about a tablespoon of Kitchen Bouquet if it is available in your area. It adds color and flavor.
