GA,

I have not. My dad’s family is Scottish and Irish.

I have heard bagpipes before. I’m sure I would like it. Sounds interesting. I like a wide variety of music. I just want quality of whatever I am listening to. I do adore marching bands. We have several military bands that march. They are wonderful too. Our high school bands are terrific. This city is bursting with musical talent.

GA - I have been at the the Edinburgh festival and seen the tattoo and the lone piper on the castle ramparts. It was magical. I love bagpipes and prefer listening to them outdoors. Marching bands are great.

NeedHelp, I'm a marching band lover as well.    On a slightly different issue, have you ever watched the Scottish Tattoos?   They're exhilarating.    If you've seen the wedding scene in Brigadoon when the clans march in, think of that multiplied by 100.

And drill teams - wow!   The precision is soooo inspirational.   My parents used to go to drill team performances when they were Winter Texans.

NH, I played an alto saxophone in high school band that marched in a lot of the parades. I've been twice to New Orleans since Katrina(2005). First, it was a yr after. Then, I was back in 2010.
Yes, Bellingrath Gardens is beautiful when all the azaleas are blooming.

My gripe for the day: as I read through various threads, I see there are posters whose mission is to read through each message from other posters and criticize or correct them. That is rude. Why not just answer the OP's question and say what's right or wrong from their experience? The OP can read the responses from different point of views and decide what's relevant or correct for his/her situation.

How would we like it if the AC experts (if they had time) came on each thread and critiqued everything we wrote? That'd be a quick way to shut down the free exchanges of ideas.

dads1caregiver,

Oh gosh! Too funny. I went to the Mardi Gras balls with an old boyfriend of mine. His family was in the court so we were expected to attend. I loved my boyfriend but his mom was another story! Hahaha I didn’t like her at all. Don’t think she was fond of me either. His dad was great.

Endymion and Bacchus are great parades! So what kind of marching did you do? Band? Dance?

When was the last time you were in New Orleans? It’s been awhile since I have been in Mobile. Have you been to Bellingrath Botanical Gardens there? That’s on my bucket list.

I have marched in many MG parades while growing up in Mobile. I was invited, by a boyfriend, to the Endymion Ball. Oh memories! Funniest one, I had not met BF's mother before that night. We both walked out of separate rooms to leave & we had the same dress/gloves(different colors)on. From her side, the relationship went downhill from there. She's the only mother of a bf that never liked me...that, I knew about. LOL.

The temp here is going down to 19 tonight. As I was driving home, I came behind a white car with snow over the whole back windshield, on the trunk and the top, but no lights on. I blinked my lights and blew my horn, but nothing changed. I drove around them in the other lane and saw snow on the hood and the wiper blades were going, but still no lights. A white car driving at night, no lights, covered with white snow is an accident waiting to happen. :(

My gosh. bad year for us this year. All three of our parades are canceled for this evening due to weather, strong winds and rain. Better to cancel parades and be safe. They are being rescheduled for the weekend.

This skull breaker challenge is crazy! Kids are getting hurt! A policeman just reported on television if someone is seriously hurt the kids doing this cruel stunt for social media they will be prosecuted for assault! Good!

Poor kids being physically hurt, one girl was lied to by other kids saying it was a school project. A little boy had his arm broken because he did it.

Are y’all aware of this stupid challenge? Three kids jump together tricking the kid in the middle. The kid in the middle has his legs kicked out from under him and the kid is supposed to fall onto their head so it can be shown on social media! Horrible!

Wow, just saw on the local news that we had a fatality at the uptown parade tonight, Krewe of Nyx. A woman was hit by a float. It rarely happens where a person gets killed by a float.

The police are investigating the incident. So sad 😞. Happened on Magazine St.

Nyx is a fun parade. It’s a really popular parade on the uptown route. It gets very crowded. Our police are excellent at crowd control for the parades but they can’t cover every single block of Magazine St.

So many kids at the parades. First of all, it is awful that the lady was killed and so sad that children witnessed this tragedy.

You know, the section of Magazine St. that she was hit happens to be a narrow section of that street. The crowd needs to step back in that area. If the crowd is pushed forward there, there isn’t any place to escape. It’s a tight spot.

I go to the uptown parades but I go to a different section to view the parade.

Polar,

Thanks. It was Krewe of Freret. We start rolling weeks before Mardi Gras. Lots of parades leading up to Mardi Gras day. Mardi Gras is Feb. 25. I want to see the Krewe of Barkus this year. Love that parade! My dogs would not have been right to be in it. My schnauzer was crazy and my greyhound would have been too shy but I love seeing the other dogs. Very low key parade. A fun laid back parade to view. We like to go eat at The Gumbo Shop before and then walk out to the street to catch the parade. It passes in front of the restaurant.

We had a friend that gave us passes to sit and view the Krewe of Freret parade at Gallier Hall. John Kern got involved with this krewe and I really wanted to see it roll. It's a parade that is connected to our musicians. It is probably going to end up being one of our super krewes like Endymion and Bacchus. This year Trombone Shorty was honored. Love him! Since John Kern got involved the floats are going to really special. Trombone Shorty was going to have his bust on the float that was supposedly larger than any other one done. He was the Grand Marshal of the parade. Great choice! Music is part of our culture, so is Mardi Gras so it is a great combo. There were lots of marching bands in the parade too, which I love! Always have since I was a kid.

I am always on the street like most people for the parades and this year we had special passes to Gallier Hall which has food, drinks, bathrooms right there. Wonderful seating to view the parade. Oh well...couldn't be helped that we missed it.

I was supposed to go to the parade yesterday afternoon. We invited my daughter to go with us. Her car broke down on the way and we drove to meet her on the interstate hoping we could pick her up and still make it to the parade. No such luck. The AAA truck took forever to arrive. We had to have her car towed to the repair shop. Oh well.

Countrymouse, this is one of the alarming articles, citing not only flooding, but possible "life threatening" situation in Wales, a "rare red warning", troops brought in, and more.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/uk-issues-rare-danger-to-life-warning-over-storm-dennis/ar-BB103lyX?ocid=spartandhp

Troops aren't unusual here in major events, but the "life threatening" warnings took me by surprise.   Perhaps it's because of the bucolic villages featured in the various British series (Midsommer Murders, Father Brown, etc.) that I picture idyllic, lush flower covered cottages as opposed to raging waters.

Goodness! I'd no idea we'd made the news! Thank you for all your good wishes :)

To be sure it is a bit blowy out there, but I bet that no one who's seen extreme American weather would think much to it. The flooding is happening mostly because we had such a continuously wet autumn and early winter that there is nowhere left for the rain to go - the land is just saturated. Not to say I'm not very sorry for the poor people and animals who've got nowhere to sleep tonight. I suppose you don't stop to think what eight foot of muddy water would do your life if it got into your home, until it happens to you.

This county is such a backwater that there is only one road important enough to qualify as an arterial route, and it's the one I'll be trundling along back and forth tomorrow (I've been put on a different round. Looks like I'm in disgrace, again, whatever my shift leader said). If *that* road is closed then we'll just have to shut down until it all gets back to normal, and people's neighbours must get them out of bed and breakfasted, that's all.

Countrymouse, I'm glad you posted.  I was wondering if you were safe and what others you know are experiencing with the two bomb cyclones threatening imminent disaster.   According to what I've read, these two are so powerful that they're literally record breakers, and unfortunately will bring disastrous flooding and hurricane force winds.

I'm hoping you and yours are safe throughout this disastrous event.

Proper whine because I am feeling defeated.

Today's round began at seven a.m. It had eight calls on it to be completed by three p.m. The difficulty is that we have a lot of flood water around our area this weekend and some of the roads are impassable. If we followed advice/instructions never to drive through flood water because you can't really tell how deep it is, ALL of the roads out of our city would be impassable - so we don't follow the advice, we cross our fingers, stick our hazard warning lights on, and drive slow, occasionally breaking out in a cold sweat and praying that we won't be the idiot whose car breaks down in the middle of a flood and gets swept away to its doom.

Anyway. As I was on my way to my last call, insanely late, I got a call from my shift leader to say DO NOT GO TO THAT HOUSE. THE CLIENT'S DAUGHTER IS HAVING A FIT ABOUT HOW LATE YOU ARE. REPEAT: DO NOT GO.

I said I'd rather go and face the music and apologise and try to put things right but no go. Shift Leader said she had only just got the daughter back in her box and didn't want me stirring her up again. So I trailed home sadly with my tail between my legs.

For nine solid hours I had kept my head down and paddled as fast as I could and done what I could to make sure that seven (eight, actually, because one client turned out to be two people who both needed help) out of eight (nine!) people were safe and comfortable; but it doesn't count. Because one person is understandably furious - it IS understandable - that her mother didn't get her lunch on anything approaching to time.

I know it isn't my fault, and my shift leader told me it wasn't my fault, but it *feels* like it's my fault.

And we've all got to do it all again tomorrow. 😞

And it's still raining 😟

Glad and Riverdale - I'll add that some OPs will bite people's heads off when they don't get the answers they want. When I see that the OPs behave that way, I just skip the questions and don't offer any comments or suggestions.

I agree Glad. Posters come on with the broadest of questions, seemingly expecting others to understand all that might relate to the issue and then often go silent or half heartedly respond still not truly providing information as though it is top secret. I felt drawn in to help yesterday but it can be fruitless and frustrating so I have to hold back as nothing is accomplished.
