Find Care & Housing
Oh! I do have a pat on the back for me today...our gas fireplace had started making a weird sputtering noise and the pilot light flame had taken on the orange color instead of the blue...so I knew it needed a good cleaning...my brother usually does that..but I watched him last time and so decided I could do this...I took it all apart and gave it all a good cleaning and vacuuming and viola!!! works great now..no more sounds of any kind...just like it's supposed to be... yay me...

Well, no whines today either...has been a quiet, lazy Sunday kind of like we used to have. The brother was busy fixing a sink and asked if I needed him to come and if not he was going to stay there...I was actually kind of glad today as I just wanted to kick back and not worry about doing anything...Mama has drank all her Ensure today and I have backed off adding too much to it for now as I think her tummy is still getting over a bug... Jeanette, I have seen a lot of times that when Mama gets a bug of some kind, even just a small cold, or an issue with a tooth, and of all things, an ear that is kind of icky and needs a good cleaning...all of it can cause issues of a magnitude that is hard to imagine...None of these things would have phased her in her healthy years, but now the least thing can cause a major problem and since she can't vocalize what she is feeling now it is all a guessing game...so I have now had to become at checking out things I used to would never even thought of before.....but so thankful I finally know what to look for ....

Cats are funny for sure, I have had many a cat go up a tree and I would get my ladder and spend hours trying to get them down and then once they think you have decided to ignore them, THEN they will come down...silly little stinkers.... so glad you Mom is doing better Jeanette....it could have very well been some bug or as you said, car sickness....seems like everything affects them now...

Hey Freqflyer!

My dad was undiagnosed OCD. He made a pre-printed grocery list by aisle (columns) of all the usual stuff they had, so then my mom would only have to check next to it, or put the quantity next to it, so when my dad went shopping....he didn't really have to think that hard unless it was a new product or the product changed it's look/location. They kept the latest one on the fridge. It worked like a charm until the grocery store reorganized! Give it a go.

oh h*ll , i love animals jeanette . im fixin to cram some kind of animal into another pot of beans right now . heather and i finally started laying stone today . we are stoning the insides of two basement egress ( escape ) wells . the homeowner is a renowned nut ( genius ) and wants these walls ledgy enough to climb out of without the usually required ladder . so aside from strategically placed climbing ledges protruding from the walls , one well will have a flower planter entirely made of stone and the other will have two staggered rock shelves for hen / chicken planters . the top plants should eventually cascade into the bottom one . this home will be brick / stone mix but im not doing the brick . ( unless the brick crew do s*itty work )
im learning things . like , if i eat food in the morning my body converts that food into body heat . my last pot of beans were so dam good i stretched em with a quart of canned potatoes and they just got better . pork loin in this batch , im thinkin ..

Happy belated birthday Veronica!! Too bad the food sucked!!

hope, glad your kitty came home. Mine likes to hang out at night as well. She will climb onto the roof and sit there meowing by my bedroom window at night. I go to let her in and she "pretends" she can't get down.. Well, she got UP there!! A few months ago I'd drag the ladder out in them middle of the night... pffttt, not anymore.

Mom seems to be doing better, her appetite is back and she''s as normal as possible. She had the sneezies n sniffles so maybe a tummy virus was bugging her. It's hard for her to articulate what's bothering her and such a guessing game for me. Don't worry, if I in anyway thought she was having a TIA or anything of any majorness... we'd be off in a nano second to the ER or Clinic. She might also have had a touch of car sickness since she hasn't ridden for 3 hours in quite some time.

pamstegman, who is that lovely nurse in the photo??

Susan, what happened? Did someone get upset at some advice you gave? The joy of this website is advice is not a one size fits all. ALL advice, except perhaps some of capn's animal advice (LOL) is appreciated. I wouldn't let that stop me from giving it nor posting on here, so c'mon back and dive right on it.

I haven't posted much lately, and certainly won't be offering any advice anymore....my only whine right now is that Mom commandeered my only sweatshirt today, thinking it was hers. Now it will never fit me again.

This is just a whine as I know there isn't anything I can do... today I noticed that the rug in my parent's family room [their kitchen table is in that room as there isn't any eat-in space in their kitchen] needs a major cleaning.... oh my, lots of bread crumbs, spots on the rug, twisty ties, etc. I did see the vacuum sitting out being recharged so maybe there is still hope.

At one time a few Christmases ago I offered to have a cleaning crew come to their house to give it a fresh start.... well I could tell from the expression on my face that she thought I though she wasn't a good housekeeper [she use to be but is but she's loosing her eyesight with old age].... and she wasn't about to let any strangers in the house. So I scrapped that idea. And no, I am not going to be Hazel..... I can barely keep up with cleaning my own house, I don't need two houses to clean.

If someone had offered me a whole house cleaning free of charge, I would be shouting from the roof tops in glee :)

FF, he must be the Cat Who Walks By Himself, and All Places Are Alike To Him.

I think snow must be very uncomfortable if one's paws are generously furred underneath. With our old cocker spaniel, the snow used to get packed into little hard balls under his toes - you've never seen such a fuss as we had getting them off him again. You can get snow shoes for pets, but it's not much less trouble and quite how a Maine Coon would take that I daren't think - no sense of humour, these cats...

Hope, I am so happy the cat came home... I was ready to pack up and drive to where ever you lived to help you look for her. Cats will always find something that catches their eye and will turn a deaf ear to anyone calling them to come home :P This time of year, mice are everywhere, lot of good hunting out there. Your cat had an adventure, but I am sure she is glad to be back indoors.

I have a heavy furred Maine Coon cat who will NOT go outside when it is cold, and forget about snow, she's not stepping on that. My other cat is a Black Bombay, thus a very thin coat of fur but he will spend quality time outside no matter how cold, walks in the snow, or even in the rain. Go figure.

This is not really a 'whine' but an observation. I have discussed before my mother with moderate dementia. I am always amazed at what she remembers and does not. For example: the biggest or most important events in her life she cannot remember. Like at Thanksgiving, she spent the whole day with her sister that she adores. They ate and talked and just sat with each other. At the end of the day and even thereafter, she had no recollection of the huge meal she ate and the time spent with her sister. We always expect mom to forget stuff. But yesterday, she and I went to the shoe store for me to pick up some boots. Next day I couldn't believe that she asked me if I was going to wear the black boots I got yesterday. I thought, "What"? You actually remember THAT?

Veronica, happy belated Birthday :) Oh my gosh, that will be one birthday meal you will remember for a long time. Reminds me of an episode of "I Love Lucy" when all 4 of them were dining out and didn't know what to order.

I am not much of a Riesling wine fan, but my Dad loves the taste of German Riesling.... I found only one that I will drink and it is made by Barefoot. I know the Crane boys on Frasier could recommend a good hearty Riesling :)

Veronica bless your heart...a belated Happy Birthday to you and I think you are so awesome that yall took care of the waitress...Too many folks assume they are responsible for the stuff they pass off as cuisine in some of these places...That was great! So glad yall did not have to pay...you shouldn't have....maybe yall can make up for it at the end of the month ... :)

I am so happy to report that this morning at 6:17 AM I was awakened to the sound of a tiny mewing at the basement door and I bolted to it to find my sweet kitty had returned!!!! I am so happy...not only is Mama having some good days but now kitty is home....I can't believe she stayed out in this horrid below frigid weather....she hates the cold..which is why I was so afraid something had nabbed her...who knows what she got into, but just so thankful she is safe and home and warming cozily beside Mama and her other kitty as we speak...yay!!!!

Veronica I am delighted to see that you have not lost your English reluctance to complain about terrible food in restaurants! That is not a whine. That is legitimate fury at being given diabolical muck and expected to put up with it. It was very sweet of you to take care of the waitress. I'm sorry it spoiled your birthday - but you can dine out on the story, instead. Hugs to you, and many happy returns x

Now I am going to whine big time but it is so bad it's funny. Last night we went out for my birthday celebration dinner. Somewhere we had been before but it had clearly changed hands yet again & was passing itself off as high end that is they now have cloth napkins. We ordered a glass of reisling and opened the menu. There was nothing in there I could safely eat (gastitis). I have no idea what the cuisine is but every single item was spiced up and had weired names. hubby has travelled world wide on business and he did not know. We consulted the waitress and she said she thought they could accomodate us. The salmon would be plain without the horseraddish sauce for me, they had green beans so OK but M went with the included roasted brussell sprouts and yes they could manage mashed potatoes as neither of us likes mashed sweet potatoes. The first sip of the yellow fluid in the wine glass burned the backs of our throats and M went to inspect the bottle. Yes indeed it said "Reisling on the label and "made in germany' All I can say is the Germans should be ashamed of themselves. (Apologies for any of that nationality on this forum) I was ready to leave at that point and go next door to the Italian place where I know the food is good. I was even prepared to wait in the car but it was 10 degrees out so I thought better and contented myself with tapping my fingers on the table. The food finally arrived and included a slushy blob of a white substance. M asked the waitress what it was!. I took a bite of salmon, tastless of course and dipped it into the mayo I had requested Yuck. Got some of the white slime on my fork and it was clearly reconstituted dried potato flakes. Next the green beans. They were warm and oily but I could not cut them. M picked one up and tried it "Totally raw" was his conclusion. He persued his meal still hoping to shame me into behaving but after his second raw brussell sprout and a taste of the white sline, he was done too. The waitress made the mistake of asking how everything was and got it with both barrels but we assured her we were not blaming her so once again she hastily went back to the kitchen where the owner/manager/cook was hiding. Mike had decided by this time he was paying with cash and not much of that but we did leave the waitress her tip, she had done her job and was a nice little girl. The bill was presented and M didn't open it. he said "Now I will tell what I am going to pay for and if he does not like it he can take me to court" and handed it back unopened. She was in the kitchen for a long time and we were sitting by the entrance coats on. She said "You don't need to pay anything" Sometimes it feels good to be a total bitch which I rarely do. M's birthday is at the end of the month so we will go to another eatery. That one will only last as long as their lease. This is a very poor area and most locals idea of a celebration meal is an "All you can eat buffet for $12.99" Keep warm everyone and go to Jeannie Gibbs for dinner tonight.

Jeanette, there is a four hour window of opportunity for clot-busting medicines in an ischemic stroke. You appear to be past that. On the other hand, if she is taking Coumadin and has a brain bleed, it will continue to bleed out. You know her history, we don't. You know her meds, we don't.
On a Saturday night, the ER is about the best option unless you have an on call nurse or MD.

Something is just not right...I am monitoring her closely. She still doesn't have an appetite, just thirsty. Oh man....

My mother leans forward with her hands on her head or face, looking at nothing except what's in her head, I guess. She'll sit a long time like that. She looks like she is miserable and sorting through things. It's easy right now to snap her out of it. I'm glad I can always bring my mother back to reality, even if her version of things that happen in this reality are so different from mine.

Captain, I'm with Jeanette...I'll help her kick your country azz....if you want a coat that bad I'll send you one ;) They most certainly need THEIR coat worse than you I'm sure...One time I found a feral cat with some kittens during a really cold snap and they would simply not allow me to catch them and take them home...I was frantic...finally I took off my pretty full length wool coat and made a nest in the shrubs they were hiding in so they could burrow up...I did go back and check on them and they were enjoying it...and doing well....

Jeanette, when Mama is having her "more off than on days" she stares a lot too. and I don't know why but that does something to me that i can't describe and it wears on you...a LOT. she has not done that the last couple of days but I know it will happen again. I'm kind of bankrolling all these good moments so I can go back and revisit them when we have the bad days...the emotional roller coaster..it just goes on and on.. (((hugs)))
