Book go back to the treadmill. Set it on a very slow speed and hold onto the bars, that is why they are there and take long strides, that makes it easier. Before you start learn stretching exercises, the ones you do lying down and only repeat each one about ten times and rest in between. Eat all your local fruites and veg and fish. Loose the junk food. Substitute yogurt for ice cream. Don't buy it. Take the stairs at work but go slow and use the hand rail. Be very carefull becuase of your osteoporosis. Go to all the Drs now and get anything done before you loose your health insurance, that includes teeth and eyes. if the person the bosses trust to leave in charge when they are away could be let go next year chances are there won't be a business at all or they will be running it from their home. So keep the clothes and loose the weight. Exercise is good but less food is even better.

Good for you book!! Try doing short walks-start 10 minutes at a time and slowly increase your time. There are some good DvD's that may help.
What I need is flexibility work. Yesterday while shopping the store we were at had polished floors and I must have stepped wrong and pur my right foot down at the right edge of my boot and down I went. I feel on left knee and left wrist as my right ankle twisted. So embarrassed!
Today lower back stiff along with ankle. Ack.... ao much to do before the holidays yet.

I am determined to exercise. Unfortunately, I do not have the going power to continue doing it. I have a treadmill (fave sis bought it for me) in my bedroom. I'm tired in the beginning, and when I get on it, I get more tired. Walking like a drunk (lurching left, right and slamming against the hand rail), etc... I gave up on it.

I bought the twister exercise with attached stretch ropes at Ross. As all exercise gimmicks (I've bought the foot exercise bike, the heavy duty foot stepper (got tired and wobbly and almost fell off several times), yoga mat (ended up in the corner collecting dust - ended up giving it fave sis), and lots of Exercise Apps (!! haven't even tried one yet). sigh.... I'm gaining weight Fast on my belly. I look pregnant. And most of my work slacks and jeans no longer fit. I cannot afford to buy new clothes..since I may not have a job next year. As it is now, I've been let off early from work without pay. So, my paycheck is really getting smaller and smaller.

Finally, a few nights ago, I decided to use the twister. I don't know how to use it - so I googled, "how to use ..." I found several sites but finally hit the pay load 2 nights ago. One site (experimentalpro) has some great exercises (total of 11) to build up to. But it was computer-generated figure doing the exercise. I needed a real life person doing it. So I found another one by mastermoves. This is where I learned the importance of standing straight when doing it and Not to move your upper body. Only your waist and legs do the moving.

For the past 2 days, I've started out simple. I mean, 5 minutes in the morning (!!) is great for me. And then do more in the evening. I only do like a very simple moves right now. I want to get my body used to the darn disc (which keeps moving when I don't want it to.) Anyway, I wanted to let you know, that with just only 5 minutes AM/PM, I find myself actually sitting up straight! I'm a huncher - from years of reading books. I would slouch on the bed or the chair and read. Same with the computer. I realized today, that I'm actually sitting up straight. Yippee... And the great thing about this twister exercise? It doesn't take out a lot of energy from me - since most times, I'm always so tired.

I've also bought an Aquastone Humidifier from Kmart. I filled it 2/3 of water last night. This morning, I woke up okay. No stuffy face. I actually set it next to my sofabed. I'm now thinking of buying more and put one next to dad's bed. I've noticed that lately he's been picking his nose. Hopefully the humidifier will stop that habit. Unfortunately, it costs $18.00.

Yes I am. It's a CBRF with a max of 24 residents which they 22 currently. I know all the residents by name and usually visit with several of them when I stop in to see Dad as I am not sure with some of them how often they have family visit.

Today is Dad's 85th birthday. His AL has special birthday meals so he is having Ribs and french fries! Yesterday he got balloons and at his happy hour the director got him to dance and they played Happy Birthday several times which I got on video he was having a good time. The director took several photos of me dancing with dad during another Happy Birthday song. Hubs and I took him out for Fish Fry after. It was a good day and am glad his AL place is so great to the residents!

Hi qgbbangels. Welcome to AC (Agingcare.) When I found this site about 2 years ago, this was my very first online forum that I've ever been to. I don't have FaceBook etc... So, some tips, in case you're a complete newbie when it comes to online forums.

1. If you need to search a subject, on the top right is the search engine. The site must have made some changes because the other day, I tried to use it, and ended up with frustrations. In the end, I gave up, and looked through some of my Microsoft Word notes to find this specific thread/discussion I was looking for. Too bad, the old search engine was so much better than the current one.

2. On the top right: MY ACCOUNT / PUBLIC PROFILE / SIGN OUT. If you click on the Public Profile, you will find your message board in which posters have sent you a message or HUG. Please not that if you don't hit the 'PRIVATE" message, anyone can read anyone's comments here.

3. If you want to know more about a poster, just click on their name, and it will take you to their message board. If you don't see anything at all - then they made it private so that no one can read anything that was written/HUGGED to them.

4. In the top right in the Box: Your Account. You have: NEWSFEED (it updates you on the latest comments on threads/discussions that you have commented on.) ACTIVITY - is where you can find the threads that you have commented on. FOLLOWING - every comment you make, that thread/discussion will go here. The same if you click on 'FOLLOW'.

Hope this helps. Later...

Book, I am sorry about the hair dye allergy and the series you just read that wasn't what you wanted it to be.

So, I will tell you a story about hair dye that I hope will put a smile on your face and maybe bring forth at least a bit of a chuckle.

High school proms are very memorable occasions for students and families. Each prom I made my daughter's dresses that gave them both one of a kind garments. They both had long hair so styled quite easily in the salon. They always looked so beautiful for the high school dances.

The surprise was my son! He thought he would please his gurlfriend by dying his beautiful blonde hair black. She was kind of a goth, thank goodness his taste in women has much improved!

Well anyway, my son decided he did not like the black hair look, so decided to use bleach, you know clorox, to get his own color back. All this so far is without my knowledge. He called me in tears to tell me what he had done and his scalp was burnt and his hair, a shade of green. So, I took him to my stylist to try to undo some of the damage that he had done. This isn't sounding very funny is it. Stylist ended up having to shave his hair very short, and naturally could not do anything about the burns. But, it did look better and he wore a hat to prom.

Moral of the story? If your son is going to prom which should be easy compared to getting a daughter ready don't take for granted that you may still spend hours in the beauty shop with him.

It is quite funny now, even to him.

Depression. I really did enjoy this new author and her book series that I started reading yesterday. Book is action packed. So much secrets and lies, fightings to the death, etc...betrayals. I got more depress. So lastnight, I opened book 2 and same M.O. as book 1. I stopped reading it, skip to several mid pages and the ending..same M.O.. I then did the same with book 3, 4 and 6... main characters that I liked in book 1..changed and became the bad guys.. I can't read these books right now. I definitely woke up this morning so depress.

Fave sis gave me a gift .. an IPad Air and a keyboard. She spent so much. I truly tried to look excited. But I got more depress because she's drowning with bills, a shopaholic, and she's digging her hole deeper. Not my problem but it's hard to not take it on.

I will no longer be able to dye my hair. Yesterday, I did a touch up that ended up with the whole hair. Scalp burning. Then, while waiting for the dye to set in, l was startled to feel my lips tingling. Oh no.. I only get that when I'm allergic to something. More waiting. Then my tongue started tingling. Okay..no more dying my hair. Another event to make me depress. Came home and googled signs of allergy to hair dyes. Yep, it's allergy. The more I expose myself to it, I can eventually have a sudden reaction that may require a last minute visit to the ER. Googled and found that there are dyes that I may be able to use without getting an allergic reaction.

Next time ask for the hat. When the specimen is collected ask them to give you the hat to take home. They are only thrown away. Next time a spec is needed you can just do it at home. Washout the hat with some bleach to sanitize it and be sure to rinse well to get rid of the bleach.

Tryingtocope, what a day. I hope you're able to get a good night's sleep tonight after such a day. I think the labs automatically should use a hat for elders. Many have trouble with the little bottle. My mother always comes out with just a little anytime she gives a sample.

Took mom to drs appointment today and then had to take her to lab for blood work ordered by two different docs. Got there and found out one doc also ordered a urine test. What an experience that was trying to get a urine sample from mom! Found out after the fact there is something called a "hat" that you can put in the toilet to collect the urine??? Sure wish I had that today - guess I better try to find one before the next time I have to do this. All of this up close and personal, hands on caregiving is taking its toll on me. Was so close to taking the cup home to try to get the sample at home - but lab is a 40 minute drive one way from our house (I live in a very rural area so everything is a drive!) and we are having a bad snow storm so I did NOT want to have to drag mom back out tomorrow to deliver the sample and my funds for sitters is tapped this month! Oye Ve! Glad THAT is behind us! Then got stuck in the snow trying to get back to the house so had to walk mom up to the house - no way I was going to be able to push the wheel chair in this snow. SOOOO tired.....zzzzzzz

One of my dad's sisters called last night. Her husband passed away after a brief illness not too long after mom died this winter. Even though this was my uncle and aunt my parents didn't really socialize with them while I was growing up. ( my mom had these odd rules about some of dad's siblings). So I have spoken with her twice this year-awkward conversations since I do not know here very well. She called to let me know she sent a Christmas card to dad so I caught her up a bit and then asked how she was doing. She almost started crying on the phone as my uncle's birthday would have been this week. She seems to be quite grief stricken yet as she mentioned grief support groups she has been attending.
Dad on the other hand hasn't talked about mom for several months and I am not sure if/how I want to bring the topic up despite bringing mom up in conversations.
I just do not know if I handled the entire conversation well or not.

Progress or not I don't know. Hubby told me this morning I had better make sure I opened all his bills. That was after he had opened his new credit card from Lowes and dicovered it had a 25% interest rate. I actually have done that for some time but first remove the paying in slip and return envelope than give him the bill to check over. After all a neurologist told him about ten years ago that he does not have dementia. Well he does a good imitation but he thinks I am the one that confuses him

Oh hey look now I'm in 2014. Haha! I couldn't figure out how to get to the more recent comments. Posting a little something time traveled me here! I thought I'd have to read all 20,000+ comments to catch up. Don't get me wrong, I was really enjoying the stories.

So happy to hear that others have issues with the Television. Wow, my dad's whole day is revolved around the tv. Watching the news with an old racist man is not fun, nor is it good for my 4 homeschooled children. 😱 lol. I love the idea of AFV .We will try that, or Ridiculousness on MTV is seriously funny also by the way!
Getting him a new tv for his room for Christmas will be am amazing gift for all of us, I think.

My 73 yr old father recently moved in with us as I had posted the other day on a different thread. I just have to say again how grateful I am to have found this group. As I read some of your stories from 2011 it's like a storybook. I'm just beginning my journey caring for my Dad and I have no idea what's in store for us . Just one day at a time, I guess.

I am right with everyone demented or not about the news on TV. Yes it is terrible I understand that but I don't need ten people telling me the same thing over and over again at the tops of their voices. Even if the volume is turned down I can still see them yelling. I agree there are terrible people in the world and they should be punished whatever their exalted positions. A lie is a lie does not matter whoose mouth it comes out of. Won't get into politics but I do need to silence hubby when he stands over me yelling about the punishments he would dole out. It is so confusing for someone who has problems with reality anyway so I can see why they get agitated. Films of fuzzy animals are much more comforting than people being executed. It is simply confusing.

Glad, I think my dad is getting to the stage like your mom when it comes to watching TV. I've noticed that he no longer wants to hear the HLN or CNN news. Nor does he like cartoons. Or any shows that have too much talking. I noticed that when I'm watching the Animal channel, he pays attention. And laughs. America's Funniest Home Videos. I used to love that show. Now, I don't care for it. I guess I should also compromise and cringe for the 1 hour weekly show. What's one hour, right? As I was reading your comments, I realized that Dad would like that show, too. Thanks for the tip.

Last night I tried something different with Mom. Each night upon returning home from day care we go through hours of "is this my home", " where are my parents", who's house is this", "where are the girls", "I want to go home to my girls", " are we married, who are you"... Well you get the idea, dang sundowning! And Mom's hubby is so patient and talks so calmly with her, and I know this is stressful for him too.

When it started last night, within minutes of getting in the house, instead of turning on the news, I turned on America's Funniest Home Videos. It was a miracle, pratically none of what has become the nightly routine of complete and utter disorientation and anxiety. TV of any sort has become very difficult for Mom to watch. She constantly asks to have the volume turned up. And I don't think it is a volume issue, rather she just does not understand what she hears. But show her videos of funny animals, kids, or just plain stupid adults with some of the stunts people will record, and VOILA! Nothing short of a miracle, brain too busy trying to process what she is seeing. And her hubby? He was laughing at many of the videos and Mom trying to figure out what was so funny. Instead of getting stressed, he was laughing, instead of getting anxious at least Mom was enjoying sitting next to him on the couch.

Hope these old reruns are on every night!

Judda, I'm glad that your dad's health issue was nothing major like a stroke,etc... Ulcer. I haven't done any research on that. I guess that means he needs to eat mini meals, right? Or was that acid reflux? Hmmm.. skin cancer patch last week. And caring for his Alz wife. Yes, I can see where stress gets to him. 95 years old... I think my nana (dad's mother) had reached age 95. I think Nana is the only person I knew who reached that age.

My Dad seems to have had an ulcer. No wonder after the intense dramas with his wife with ALZ, plus having a skin cancer patch removed from his neck last week. At 95 it's amazing he is in the health he's in.

Amen to cmgnum for that precise advice to Lynnemk.

I think that caregiving is more about letting go, acceptance, and deepening your own relationship to oneself, as you see yourself in relationships to others. At least that seems to be my lessons.
