Replacing the much lamented 'On My Mind' profile option, this thread is for musings, jottings, whimsies, preoccupations and the rest of the thesaurus for anyone to jot down anything they please.
I can't remember what the maximum character count was before, can anyone else? But anyway it wasn't very many so let's keep to that.
AlvaDeer: Barrel racing?!?! WOW!!!
I was a baby! We had a saddle club. I was 14 when we moved from Missouri, so I was young indeed. We are talking 7 decades ago.
I was a tomboy and a daredevil and used to run my horse under trees, grabbing limbs to dismount, pretending I was Audie Murphy! Look him up. I honestly just cannot imagine.
I think it wasn't until Robert Wagner came onto the scene I knew I was a girl. Love will let you know.
Would have been--what in the world in these days? I guess gender fluid? Too funny to think of, especially when my daughter turned out to love jewelry, barbies, perfumes, clothes, and all things girly!
My DH even looked similar to him when he was young . I guess I have a type.😜
.
The cats got along OK. We kept them separated mostly.
Glad you had a nice visit and things with your move , being closer to family, is falling into place .
@nacy - we are all different. There are many routes to the same end.
How wonderful that you can see your son more often now.
Hoping that everything will work out for all of you. Will say an extra prayer for you.
Sending hugs your way!
God has given me peace about the cancers in the family.
There is no better feeling than being at peace. I am very happy to hear that you are at peace.
Me too, very happy family is closer.
As long as we stop having snow (yikes, over 30 cm, that is about 11 inches, but we need moisture), I am sure driving is going to be alright.
I've passed through Frederick on several trips to see my late cousin in Pittsburgh.
Here in Millersville some of the Baltimore crime has headed our way as we are 20 miles due south of Baltimore.
The actors were in a restaurant. The daughter asked people at the next table to watch her mom so she could use the restroom.
Then the mom tries to leave the restaurant. The people protected her mom until she returned from the bathroom.
It’s so difficult for children to go out in public with their parents who are suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. There comes a point in time when children can’t take their parents out anymore.
One scene shows the daughter telling her mother that she was going to have to place her in a home. The mom says to patrons in the restaurant not to let her daughter ‘put her away.’
A young man tells a heartfelt story about his grandfather who had Alzheimer’s disease and how his mom had to place his grandfather in a home.
It was interesting to see how people responded to the actors. I’m glad that the show did this story to bring awareness to the topic. They said that by the year 2050 Alzheimer’s disease would double in size. Very sad to think about.
I haven’t watched every episode but the ones that I have watched are good.
What dates will you be here?
Our Jazz and Heritage Festival is in the beginning of May. Jazz Fest is fantastic! Greek Festival is held at the end of May. Both are great.
Are you renting a car or planning to Uber everywhere?
Do you like seafood? My favorite seafood restaurant in the quarter is GWFins.
Mr. B’s in the quarter has excellent food.
Cafe du Monde is in the quarter. Go there for coffee and beignets.
If you are interested in hearing jazz, my favorite spot is in the Marigny neighborhood, which is very close to the quarter. Snug Harbor on Frenchmen St.
Are you planning on venturing out into other parts of the city?
Do you want to eat at the fine dining establishments that are ‘classic old school New Orleans’ where you have to dress up or do you prefer a more casual vibe?
New Orleans has incredible restaurants, both casual and formal.
Southern Candy on Decatur St. in the quarter has the best pralines.
Royal St in the quarter is fun street to hang out and hear the street musicians on a Sunday afternoon. You can browse through the art galleries and antique shops.
Our WW11 museum is excellent. It’s in the CBD and near the quarter.
Uptown has a ton of good restaurants. Magazine Street is a very walkable area. The quarter is walkable. Marigny is walkable.
St. Louis Cathedral is beautiful and is in the quarter. My mother was christened there in 1925. My mother’s family came to America from England.
Message me if you have any questions.
Gotcha, you’ll have a great time. New Orleans is definitely not ‘anywhere USA.’ We are a unique city.
Well…since you’re not interested in the fine dining restaurants you will have to try out some of our low key options that are equally as delicious!
Grab a beer at Crescent City Brewhouse on Decatur Street.
Our poboy sandwiches are wonderful! They are served on delicious French bread.
Muffuletta sandwiches are sold at Central Grocery on Decatur Street. They have been around since the early 1900’s.
I love the muffuletta sandwiches at Napoleon House in the quarter.
One of my favorite burgers in the city is at Port of Call on Esplanade Ave.
Hahaha, funny that you mentioned NCIS New Orleans because I never watched the show. I get a little annoyed if our city is portrayed in a stereotypical way with ridiculous dialects that aren’t accurate.
My nephew has worked in the film industry for years and worked on the NCIS New Orleans show. He invited me to watch a filming of the show but I never got around to going. My daughter went and had fun.
You can stream our local jazz and heritage radio station. They broadcast wonderful jazz.
wwoz.org
Their website also has a listing of the live music shows. Check it out!
If you gamble there is a Harrah’s Casino in town too.
My mother was afraid to fly. She didn’t fly until she was older, long after my dad died.
Mom’s brother married and moved to the east coast right after WW11.
She flew out for a surprise birthday party that my cousins threw for him.
One of mom’s friends went with her on the trip. I was glad that she went. She was too.
My grandparents used to drive from New Orleans to see my uncle on the east coast. When the driving became too tiring for them, they decided to fly. They were much older for their first flight too. They loved no longer driving for three days to see their son.
My grandparents were precious. We would drive them to the airport. Back then we could watch the plane take off. They always held hands while walking towards the plane. It was so cute! They were married over fifty years.
Some of those expensive RV’s are like a hotel on wheels. I would be terrified to try and drive a huge vehicle like that!
So true! Sometimes we have to chill. Also true about families living far away from each other.
My oldest daughter lived In Birmingham for a while and my youngest daughter lived in Denver for a while.
Grand Canyon is spectacular! You will love it.
It is hard to travel when we are caregiving. I’m glad that you are catching up now.
Different areas definitely have different vibes.
It’s interesting how things change as the years go by.
We drove to Florida every summer when I was a child. My dad grew up in Florida. The interstate hadn’t been built yet. It took so much longer to drive there. Now, it only takes about four hours.
So beautiful! I wish we had the fall foliage that New England has. The leaves are gorgeous in Autumn. Our leaves just turn brown and fall to the ground.
We get a fair amount of rainfall but it has been pouring down today. Tornado warnings, thunderstorms, etc. A funky day!
