Find Care & Housing
Cali,

So very sad.

Horribly tragic accident.

We hear a lot about elderly drivers who shouldn’t be driving and we don’t hear about their children’s driving skills......well this afternoon a few miles down the coast, an elderly man was nearly killed (or was killed? ) by his daughter! The daughter was driving and stopped the car along highway 1 but forgot to put the car in park! It rolled off a cliff and landed at the edge of the ocean just as the tide was coming in. I don’t know if there are survivors, search & rescue isn’t going out there until tomorrow and only an elderly man was pulled from the vehicle by witnesses who must have been down on the beach! Crazy!

It is a different year, Glad.

My daughter is learning to drive in the snow!

She said had to drive to Parker to Honey Baked Ham and that it wasn’t too far of a drive. She uses GPS to find everything.

Honey Baked Ham wasn’t offering sides so she went to Whole Foods for sides.

I am hoping my oldest daughter can join us tomorrow but she suffers with her Crohn’s disease and she is having a tough time getting her diabetes under control. She will let us know in the morning.

I have cooked holiday meals for decades. This year I am doing Whole Foods.

Started my dinner for tomorrow, a day that I will be home with no company, no family, just me. And I am happy to do it. COVID is so bad here I would never risk the health of my children and their families by going there. It will be a quiet day, which is wonderful.

I started prep for my dinner tonight, made cranberry relish to go with my cornish hens tomorrow. It will be different, no doubt, but I will be just fine. Absolutely no emotional reaction other than appreciating my life, my children and that I do not have mental issues that would cause such a terrible depression that will be experienced by some.

Just making the relish was different. I usually make a full bag of cranberries, tonight just half of it. Found out my blender does better with larger quantities. LOL!

And the geese, lots of them, fly and make their honks ALL NIGHT LONG!

Had the shingles 54 years ago. Three years ago my husband got the shingles and I immediately got a shingles vaccine.
(5)
Report

Yes, that new shingles shot sure leaves a sore arm! I get the booster in December, too.

I had the old vaccine about four years ago. Then the new one came out and I was told I should get that one. The new one is supposed to be much more effective. I know people that have had a very difficult time with getting shingles. I sure don't want it either!😳

Thx Golden. Yes, it was very sad. He was only in his fifties.

I'm so sorry, Gershun. It's a very nasty disease.

Golden, shingles is what ultimately killed my brother. It went into his brain and he got encephalitis and then pneumonia. So no it's nothing to play around with.

I've known people who had shingles and I definitely don't want it, In one lady it nearly went into her brain. They caught it just in time with antiviral treatment. It could have killed her.

Freq,

Yuck! That sounds awful. I hope that I don’t get side effects when I get the second shot in December.

Pam,

That’s good! I did want to get the shot. Hubby really suffered with his case of shingles.

I had the shingles shot a few years ago and had very little side effects.

My hubs, mom and I all had the new shingles shot.. our only side effect was a sore arm.

NeedHelpWithMom, raising hand here. Yes, I had side effects from the Shingle vaccine second shot last year, felt really funky to a point that I wanted to go to urgent care. Of course, this revelation was around 10pm and all the urgent cares in my area were closed. I do tend to over-think things :P Went to the ER, got a good once over, I was dehydrated and the saline really helped. Went home a couple hours later.

Now, my sig-other had both shots. Only side effect was his shot arm was pretty sore.

All in all, was so glad I did have the Shingle shots.

I just got my flu shot and the ‘new’ shingles shot. Shingles vaccine is given in two parts. I get the next one in Dec.

The doctor said the shingles vaccine could make me feel kind of funky. Have any of you experienced any negative side effects from the vaccine?

Gershun,
There are coyotes out at 4 a.m., so no walks. 🦊🦊🦊

You stay home too, ok?

Unless you are going out for a slab....

Sendhelp: Thank you. Also for the cute llamas. Nope, no need to put drops in the non surgery eye, but good question!

Send, no more 4am walks then? ☺

People are starting to go toilet paper crazy here again. Ye gads!

Keep up the eye drops! Good on you! 🦙️🦙️🦙️
👁 Do you put the drops in only the one right eye, or both? 👀

Many California Counties will have a CURFEW from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting Saturday and continuing to Dec. 21st, to try and stop the spread of Covid-19.

freqflyer: Yes, I had cataract surgery on one eye (my right). It is a process of putting three different types of drops in my eye that my DH does for me since I don't do well with putting anything in my eyes. And that is going to be for a while, but so far so good with the artificial lens.
I wonder "if you used to be able to read without glasses," then why did get you, I presume, cataract surgeries?

GA,

Typo, should read My husband, two daughters and I went to midnight Mass at St. Louis Cathedral.

GA,

My mother was christened at St. Louis Cathedral. My grandparents lived in the French Quarter for awhile. Mom was born in 1925 in their home with a midwife.

It is a beautiful cathedral. The midnight Mass at the cathedral for Christmas is simply beautiful.

The choir is magnificent. Baby Jesus is placed in the nativity setting at midnight.

As you know, my youngest daughter moved to Denver. She was still living here at Christmas. Christmas Eve we went out for dinner, then went to see the incredible decorations at the Roosevelt Hotel and then my husband and daughters went to midnight Mass. Ahhh, pre Covid days.

I bet your embroidery of the cathedral is beautiful!

NeedHelpWithMom, have I got a tale to tell you!   My sister moved to NOLA for a few years; I visited her twice and of course took a lot of photos, including of the St. Louis Cathedral.   I thought it was such a magnificent site, the architecture, the location, the closeness to the river, and more.

So I used the photos and a NOLA placemat I bought for an embroidery design.  B/c I wanted a real picture and not an outline,  I used crewel embroidery, with crewel thread.

It took quite a while, but I was pleased with the results except that the spire for some reason wouldn't stand straight.  I redid the embroidery, but still couldn't get it straight .  So I considered that to be the one flaw that some needleworkers consider de tour for certain projects.

Llamalover, hope your cataract surgery went smoothly.

I had my eyes done this year and I still can't get use to my "new eyesight". I use to be able to read without glasses my whole life, had glasses only for driving. After surgery it is the opposite. I know it is probably too soon after your surgery to give your relation to how the vision feels now.

There it sits!
The cushion with the right fabric to cover it.
For over 9 months.
Instead of waiting longer, thinking I will sew it by hand.

I have enough free time, I will just do it!

Procrastination hurts.

Caregiver stress and burnout happens. However, there have been some really strange answers coming from really good and helpful long-time posters.
I have seen other really good and helpful long time posters try to turn the conversations to a lighter subject.

It has me thinking...and looking up things like:
"Can venting too much be harmful rather than helpful?"
(Online Psych Central articles.)

Please do not stop venting or asking for needed help! Can we lighten up a bit?

Maybe check ourselves before we go off topic and attack our fellow caregivers?
Declare a truce (or Pax) sooner before dividing opinions become offensive?

Practice some social restraint, while maintaining your perceived rights?

Thanksgiving will have us being grateful to be alive, focus on being grateful instead of what you might be missing. imo.

I am so thankful to be able to know each and every one of you!

Llama,

I sewed for my girls too. I’ve also made pillows, curtains, etc.

I have not done embroidery. I love it though. It’s so pretty.
