I don't know the ins and outs of forum design, but OMG something needs to be done to discourage all this spam... and most of it isn't even advertising spam, more like a malicious attack by a disgruntled person with more time than brains. Seriously, what is the point in posting random abc's or all the other cr*p the shows up lately?
Maybe multiple posts from a new member need to be quarantined until they can be vetted, that should be simple enough to accomplish, shouldn't it?

FF, You know I love you. I am going away now to take a lot of time to contemplate your "NO" vote.

Send, I vote "no" to the ten minute time limit to hit the like button.... mainly because we aren't all on here at the same time.... different time zones world wide.

I do know what you mean when one answers a new question, next thing there are 10 answers over a week time span and the original writer had left the building right after posting the question, never to be heard from again.

Or are today's younger people too use to instant answers?   If no one answers within 3 seconds, they are out.

There should be a ten minute time limit to "like this" once posted.
Because if I don't get any clicks, I will be required to up my efforts to be funny.

Pox on them.
Today is a legal holiday-it is illegal to send the children to school because it is closed.  Revenge will be sweet when they are left to change their parent's diapers.

Cwillie,
You make a good point, and I agree it is the job of AC to secure the website, monitor posts for spam and trolls. In addition, giving some volunteer posters the ability to freeze a thread (from receiving more posts); or even delete an unwelcome post may be helpful in addition to 'reporting' threads.

My husband said that 'volunteers' are not welcome by the website designers for some reason. When we had the ability to report a post, then click a square to prevent further posts on that thread, perhaps people got carried away? There are some old-timers that could be quarantined still, imo. ha ha.

Is 'quarantine' a technical term that I should ask my hubs about? What would that look like and what would it accomplish? Is that similar to vetting?

Ah, a quarantine, a ban, build a firewall? Lol.

If we have any doubts about the sincerity of a question, just ask the poster to explain by coming back. If they don't respond (within 10 minutes?) or a few hours, we should not be naive and continue to guess what they need on our own. We just had a barage of insincerity posts along with the other junk.

A small part of the problem may be posters who are illiterate so I think we should make allowance for that possibility. They probably need our help even more than word their questions perfectly.
the random type is simply annoying.

I have to admit I've become a bit intrigued by the random letters posts. They've been here pretty consistently for a while now. It's got me wondering - what's the point? Is there some code to it? Who the he11 has that kind of time?

And yes, seems there have been a rash of posts lately that are so badly worded I can't make heads or tails of them and give up - which is unusual for me - I do love a challenge!

Being dyslexic I'm probably the last person who should gripe about spelling and grammar but - the no punctuation thing drives me up a wall! With a mobile device all you have to do is hit the space bar twice and voila - a period will magically appear and the next sentence will automatically start with a capital letter! Sheer magic!!!

I love the people who spell phonetically - you have to sound it out to figure out what they're trying to say. I wonder how some folks get through life since their communication skills are so basic.

Also, can't some new writers take a minute to proof read what they wrote?   Are they in that much of a hurry, or is the hand held device too tricky to do any corrections?   I am not from the generation where no one uses pronunciation.   I have to re-read the post many times to try to catch what they are saying, and half the time I just give up and move to the next posting.... [sigh]

I no have problems with misspellings or typos, as we pretty much all do that once in awhile :)

I usually start checking for spam on Saturday morning (I wake up early). This weekend after reporting about 5 spam posts, I was surprised to find a post on my wall from someone at AC thanking me for doing it. So someone was taking that spam down on Saturday, which is a step forward. It is easy to do, it just takes someone with access to admin rights.

I can sympathize cwillie. Its always a few bad apples that can ruin a wonderful forum. Hopefully these spam posts can be deleted as soon as possible.

Those postings where someone looks like they are just typing part of the 2nd row on the keyboard, as annoying as it is, I view it as Star Trek language Klingon... that makes me smile :) Only the boys from the TV show "The Big Bang Theory" can translate it.

It's the spam with the telephone numbers repeated 50 times that I find not useful at all.

Usually I just scroll down to the bottom of this page to the very last line and click on CONTACT US... and fill out the form. The only thing on weekends said inappropriate post can sit for 24 to 48 hours.

Wish there was a "Report" for the original posting to help limit filling out all those cards :P

24/7 monitoring of the threads especially new ones from New posters.

I don't think we want to do anything to discourage new posters.

Just ignore all that spam and the moderators will remove it soon.

Perhaps having more frequent checks by moderators would help.

I agree something should be done and probably can be done. Perhaps an instant reply that informs new posters about the search function hidden behind those three horizontal lines. And it would be good to be able to report a poster and post and not just report a comment.
