Find Care & Housing
Dysfunctional families are the gift that keeps on giving and giving and giving. My nephew called my house earlier. I don't know how he got the number. My niece has only my cell number. One of the guys answered the phone. Nephew told him a bunch of BS and wanted to know when I was going to let my great nieces go home. I refused to speak to him. I blocked his new cell phone number. I called my niece. She said he had been trying to cause her problems. She said she had blocked his calls because she didn't want problems with regaining custody of her little girls. I went to the gate and made sure they still had his picture and instructions to not let him on the property. He's such a nasty jerk. I am not letting him ruin my weekend.

I take Ativan "as needed" for anxiety, my NP gave it to me when my folks moved in.. actually she said "oh boy, your going to need this!!" I take 1/2 pill as needed, and it just mellows me out, does not make me sleepy or anything,, just less tense. Try adjusting the dose.

Report

Dori- she takes it for anxiety so she can sleep. So I believe they lowered her dose, because yesterday she was back to normal. I have been curious about the CBD oil for myself. Glad your Mom is getting back to normalish.
Sharyn-Happy Friday to you also
Becky-Thank you for the info on Ativan and try and have a good weekend anyway.
Pam-thank you, I believe they adjusted it, seems ok now.

Becky - Ugh, "the gift that keeps on giving" is right! Is this nephew your niece's brother? (I'm sorry, I just woke up and I know you have a lot of kids in the house, but I can't quite remember all the connections!)

smeshque - Good that they reduced the dose! I've written a lot about my experience with the CBD oil here on AC, but I'll be darned if I can remember which thread (again....just woke up, lol!). Feel free to message me if you want to chat about it.

So ever since his last visit, I've taken to texting my brother every Monday and Friday, to wish him a good week and a Happy Friday, respectively. So far so good - he always replies! Sent him a pic of his "kitten-nephew's" first visit to the park yesterday. Trying to keep things light and easy, but I do realize now it's going to be up to me to hold onto those fragile family threads.....

Dorianne, Yes niece's brother. He's a total jerk. I have had issues with both of them. But she is working hard to get her life in order and to regain custody of her two little girls 3 and 5. My youngest brother who lives here has legal custody of them. They're doing well. On any given day PJ and I can't remember how many kids we have or why. But we all get along well. Just confused.

Smeshque, good the dr lowered the dosage. I’d be worried if my loved one was so heavily knocked out from medication.

Dori, I hope your mom has settled down within normal routines again. Parents seem to be hardest on the child caregiving than the child who pops in and out for short visits.

Golden, I hope your life has calmed down. I’m glad your dd is back to taking the meds. I’m sure she feels better too.

Since the first time I made an account on Facebook, I have periodically searched for my cousin in Ireland and her son as well as other cousins. This particular cousin and I corresponded via letters starting at age 11-12. Then we met in 1975. After getting married and having children, we lost touch with each other.

I searched for her again today. I came across a post by a woman naming several of my cousins. This post was a year old and about another cousin who passed away from MS. I left a message asking if anyone knew how I could connect with my cousin. Then I searched for her son. I found him! I messaged him asking if was indeed her son. He said yes. Turns out his mom passed in 2001.

I am disappointed. I plan to message her son again asking if he will friend request me on Facebook as his settings only allow friends of friends. Too many years pass and we lose contact with friends and family.

I did something yesterday I have debated doing for a while now. I ordered a DNA kit. I’m curious to find out how much Irish/Scottish and Native American I have inherited from my parents.

Sharyn, those DNA kits I don't even think about. I know my roots, all Norwegian, if it came back differently I would have one very serious identity crisis! Then what? Was it the milkman? 😁

Thanks Dori- I will do that, as I am interested in your knowledge of it.
Sharyn- Thank you. And how intersting to do your DNA test.
I know that I am German,Irish and Native American-Osage( a big Ol' mess :) ) DH is Native American- Sioux, Shawnee, and Kickapoo
Anyway it will be interesting, good luck

We are suppose to have Native American, however I could not find any info on it when I did a search on the ancestry site. Yet it is obvious in old pictures on my mom’s side of the family. Also possibly German and who knows what else. On my dad’s side, I have no doubt about the Irish/ Scottish.

Sharyn, My dad's family had a family tree that went back 14 generations back to England. The family tree and some stories had been handed down for generations. The family farm had been held in WV since the early 1800's. It was part of a land grant that George Washington made to workers after he surveyed the Ohio River Valley in the 1700's.   My uncle got interested in the history, but kept finding things that were unusual. He had a DNA done and also went to a state genealogy location in VA. He got back his DNA test and found a small percentage (under 5%) of Africa blood - a country in West Africa. In Virginia he found the name that matched a previously verified relative's name in the family tree. He was a slave on a Virginia plantation owned by one of the George Washington's family members. In the records of the Ohio River Valley survey, there is a statement that a number of slaves accompanied the survey party to care for horses, cook, etc. the slaves name only appears one time on a list of slaves owned on that plantation in Virginia. I think it's interesting to see all of the connections.

I don’t trust Ancestry, 23-&-Me, etc to behave responsibly with the DNA they are collecting. Large institutions have an abysmal history with protecting people’s personal data (Experian, TJMaxx, Anthem BlueCross BlueShield and Facebook come to mind).

Among my real-life peers, I’m the lone crackpot. Does anyone on AC Forum share my jaundiced view??

I don't trust Ancestry.com. I looked my name and there were two men listed as my brothers thatI've never heard of. It was on a free trial day. I gave them no information and didn't sign up. I'm weird about all of that kind of stuff. I've had my identity stolen and it's no fun to clean up that mess. And it's expensive. When my uncle did his research he went to the state archives in WV, KY, and VA. It was a hobby for he and my aunt. They liked the road trips. He had his DNA done by a local lab.

A close friend had a baby out of wedlock in 1966. A lot of rumors circulated - small town. But very few people knew exact details. A truly nosy, invasive woman who didn't like her back then and not in the present did all of Internet, Ancestry searches and finally got the information. She announced her findings at 50 year class reunion last fall. It was horrible for my friend.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they lost it, sold it or had it stolen. I'm just not that bothered if they do.

Though admittedly I'm also not that bothered about having my DNA analysed, either! I really don't believe they can tell me anything that isn't the classic trio - "obvious, trivial or wrong."

Then, your DNA is found at a crime scene and you have no alibi. Lol.

Or, it is used for stem cell research, and injected into a sheep's embryo.

CM, I love the classic trio - never thought of it in those terms. But is so accurate.

All valid concerns. My understanding ( I could be naive), my dna is mine, I own it and it cannot be sold or used for research without my consent. I can request for my sample to be destroyed after I receive the results. Insurers, employers do not have access to my DNA. Law enforcement can be given access when certain conditions require it....not for speeding tickets, lol!! Since I am not a terrorist or have a record of being arrested or serving time in prison, I’m not concerned about it.

Send, if I find out I am related to a sheep, I’ll let you know!, haha! Could be the black sheep in the family😜!

Sharyn Marie, I hadn't thought of ownership issues. Good observation. I was thinking more along the line of hackers and financial information. Hope you find what you're looking for.

Never thought of getting my DNA checked. Mother pursued the history of her side of the family with her usual vigor and produced reams of paper records and typed stories in which no one I know has any interest. I know we are mainly Norwegian and some Swedish on her side - about 3/4 to 1/4. That's enough for me. On my father's side he was 1/2 English (which could include many things) and 1/2 Welsh (which could also include many things).

"Professor Koch, of the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh & Celtic Studies, in Aberystwyth, says archaeological inscriptions on stones show we (the Welsh) came from southern Portugal and south-west Spain." from Wales Online.

I can easily believe the Portuguese and Spanish connection from looking at family photos and it intrigues me. Good enough.

Finally spring is here and with it approaches mother's 106th birthday. Hard to believe that she is still going much as she has been for the last year or two with no health issues other than the vascular dementia. The dreaded visit with my sister and new hub comes with it. Ugh!!! My stomach turns already.

River break up is coming, but is not spectacular as it used to be. The ice just "rots away" to slush. We used to get huge chunks of ice thrown way up the river banks, with accompanying sound effects.

dori - hope your mother has settled down. At this point it probably doesn't take much to upset her. Your comment about maintaining the fragile family threads hit home. I largely don't any more. They (and I, in that context) are too fragile.

rainey -I read somewhere about an upcoming change. Know I am thinking of you. Stay strong - you are doing the right thing.

sharyn -I think they would find black sheep in mine too

cm -not all that bothered either....

send - flights of fantasy

becky, smeshque and all - take care

Thought I had a health issue as my shoulders were quite sore a couple of evenings ago. Then I remembered I had moved the fridge out to retrieve a couple of pens that had fallen down the crack between the fridge and the counter, and then cleaned the floor in that area. A couple of ibuprofen and a heating pad have done the trick.

Walking outside is good these days. Working on counting the good stuff.

Becky ancestry site is expensive. I wanted to join but I couldn’t afford it. I have my mom’s family tree going back to the 1700’s. My dad’s family would have to be searched in Ireland and possibly Scotland which is more expensive than searching here in the USA.

Sharyn, I did it on a free trial day, but didn't consider joining. I have friends who have joined, but I don't think stayed other than a minimal thing. My uncle used state archives. I have a cousin who goes the cemetery route. She does gravestone tracings.

Golden,
I resent your judgment of "flights of fantasy".
There is research and discussion amongst scientists that you may not be interested in, that does not make ideas "flights of fantasy".
One website shared this:
“If we don’t think about it now, in five to 10 years a lot people’s genomic information will be used in ways they did not intend,” says Lauter. But encryption is a funny technology to work with, she says. One that requires building trust between researchers and consumers. “You can propose any crazy encryption you want and say it’s secure. Why should anyone believe you?”

This DNA stuff is interesting. I've always been a little curious, but I don't think it would tell me much I don't already know. Unless there are some real BIG surprises in the ol' family closet!  (Like the great-grands fled Russia because they were related to the Tzar.  Which would be interesting, but I doubt it like I doubt I'll ever win the lottery.)

Plus I've also seen way too many sci-fi movies to trust some corporate laboratory with my DNA.

Sharyn, I have Type II diabetes and take Metformin twice a day - 1000 mg in the morning and 1000 mg in the evening. I test my blood sugar 3 times a day. I follow the American Diabetes Assoc exchange diet. You can get it on line. It's easy to follow. My a1c is low. I've never had trouble with that. I've never had extremely high blood sugars. If anything if I have a problem with going too low.

Sharyn, I hope you get along okay with all of it. I like to bake, but fortunately I Don't like to eat. With exchange diet you can figure in some treats or things you really like.
