Golden inever answer the one about salary. if Dh got that question he would have had a stronger answer than R.
As for the "other" question, how about "Living in sin"

CM the one about hours that gets me is the nurses having to work 12 hour shifts. last night one girl told me she was going for lunch about 2pm, then at 8pm she still had not been and said "I guess it will be dinner now"
Wonder what happened to the Labor Laws?

MsMadge, don't forget about cheap 'n' cheerful soluble aspirin - swill it round like a mouthwash and spit it out, you won't ingest enough to hurt you and it should be pretty easy to buy over the counter.

That takes me back - people used to look over their glasses at anyone leaving before six and ask "half day, is it?" I'm finding the competitive hours culture less and less amusing as I read more and more about how damaging it is to personal and societal health and productivity.

It all sucks. What's your plan for Thursday?

Still recovering from oral surgery and struggling at work this week - urgent project dropped in my lap at 7:30 pm last night and at the office until 2:30 am without any soft foods to eat
Manager stops by my desk at 8 pm tonight and says I should go home early
On what planet is 8 pm early ?

I'm all out of the anti-inflammatory and Tylenol doesn't begin to ease the pain

When's the next powerball?

Metformin is known to cause diarrhea - a friend has to take Imodium daily with it - yikes
I know there are different classes of diabetes drugs - did dr offer up any alternative ? Mom has been on one at varying doses for 10 years without any noticeable problems

The dr told me to cut the pill in half and take half twice a day (500mg). However, I did notice the pill does not have a line on it so maybe I shouldn’t cut it. Yes the dr and the pharmacist said it could cause tummy grumbling and/or diarrhea and to take with food. I will check the the ADA diet. I think it’s similar to WW and free.

Sharyn, ADA diet is easier to follow than Weight Watchers. How did they tell you to take Metformin? I've never had upset stomach with mine. But not much upsets my stomach. You will lose some with Metformin. Back when Metformin cam out people tried to get doctors to prescribe for weight loss. I lost about 22 lbs in the first three months I started taking Metformin. My brother, Jay lost a bunch but he is much stricter with his diet and he needed to lose more weight. He follows the South Beachndiet which is very low carb. But I was afraid of it because the fat content seems high to me. I guess everyone has to find what works for themselves.

I was hoping being up and walking all around the deli would count for some type of exercise, but I guess not. I took 1/2 a tablet of metformin with dinner tonight. So far no stomach upset. I am going to check out weight watchers too. Losing about 20-25 lb would help too.

For me, normal activity involves getting up pretty frequently checking stuff on the stove, or laundry, or whatever unless I am having a fibro bout. When my kids were young I was lucky to sit down long enough for a cup of coffee. I used to think that heaven would sitting and drinking a full cup of coffee before it got cold. Now that I am old I still drink cold coffee but because I forget about it....well, actually, I lose interest after the first few mouthfuls. :)

Golden, I can believe that about getting up every half hour. PJ and I sat thru an 8-hr workshop on qualifying people for NH Medicaid. We got a half-hour lunch and two 10 minute breaks. My bad leg is killing me. PJ isn't much better. And we have day 2 tomorrow.

This probably is a whine. Apparently answering the stats Canada Labour Force survey is mandatory and if you are picked you must answer once a month for 6 months. Round one was this evening. R hates such things and finds them very intrusive.  I was answering and the lady asked was his salary was, so I called out the question to him. His answer was "None of your g**-d*** business." I relayed that to her exactly as he said it, and handed the phone to him for the rest of the survey. Earlier she had asked about the nature of our relationship, and I said "No" to everything she offered, so she put "Other". What on earth has the nature of our relationship have to do with the labour force stats? I am tempted to make up something racy next time they call.

First annoying call today was from the NH about shipping charges for mother's new slacks. Last week I talked to someone about the first pair and said to put the charges on her bill, and they said OK. This week when the second pair arrived they say they cannot do that, and could I just come down and pay Canada Post. I said I live in Fort Mc and the 5 hour drive would not be worth it, so just refuse them. So much for the overly cheery nurse who wanted mother in florals and new outfits for the summer. Sigh!!! I am not impressed.

I walk indoors all the time -1/2 hr or more usually apart from normal daily activities.Nowadays "they" are saying that even every 5 minutes helps. The last few days with the ice melted I have been able to go outside -so nice.

Hah - from the NY Times - A new study suggests that getting up from your chair every half-hour or so could reduce the risk of an early death. I think at my age I don't have to worry about an early death.

Hi everyone! Sometimes it's so good to know you aren't alone in the day to day stressors of care giving. BarbBrooklyn is so right about walking in place. There are some great "happy walk" youtube videos that can take you a mile or even more if you like. Just moving for 10 minutes straight can make you stronger mentally when things go wrong.

You can walk in place inside in the a/c, either with a DVD, or just a music app. That's what I do in bad weather

Thanks Becky, my A1C is 5.8 and has been for several years. Dr’s are now rx metformin for prediabetes. He wants me to exercise daily which is the hard part due to my work schedule. I can walk right now, soon it will be too hot in the afternoons. I’ll figure something out.

Sharyn, I have Type II diabetes and take Metformin twice a day - 1000 mg in the morning and 1000 mg in the evening. I test my blood sugar 3 times a day. I follow the American Diabetes Assoc exchange diet. You can get it on line. It's easy to follow. My a1c is low. I've never had trouble with that. I've never had extremely high blood sugars. If anything if I have a problem with going too low.

This DNA stuff is interesting. I've always been a little curious, but I don't think it would tell me much I don't already know. Unless there are some real BIG surprises in the ol' family closet!  (Like the great-grands fled Russia because they were related to the Tzar.  Which would be interesting, but I doubt it like I doubt I'll ever win the lottery.)

Plus I've also seen way too many sci-fi movies to trust some corporate laboratory with my DNA.

Golden,
I resent your judgment of "flights of fantasy".
There is research and discussion amongst scientists that you may not be interested in, that does not make ideas "flights of fantasy".
One website shared this:
“If we don’t think about it now, in five to 10 years a lot people’s genomic information will be used in ways they did not intend,” says Lauter. But encryption is a funny technology to work with, she says. One that requires building trust between researchers and consumers. “You can propose any crazy encryption you want and say it’s secure. Why should anyone believe you?”

Never thought of getting my DNA checked. Mother pursued the history of her side of the family with her usual vigor and produced reams of paper records and typed stories in which no one I know has any interest. I know we are mainly Norwegian and some Swedish on her side - about 3/4 to 1/4. That's enough for me. On my father's side he was 1/2 English (which could include many things) and 1/2 Welsh (which could also include many things).

"Professor Koch, of the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh & Celtic Studies, in Aberystwyth, says archaeological inscriptions on stones show we (the Welsh) came from southern Portugal and south-west Spain." from Wales Online.

I can easily believe the Portuguese and Spanish connection from looking at family photos and it intrigues me. Good enough.

Finally spring is here and with it approaches mother's 106th birthday. Hard to believe that she is still going much as she has been for the last year or two with no health issues other than the vascular dementia. The dreaded visit with my sister and new hub comes with it. Ugh!!! My stomach turns already.

River break up is coming, but is not spectacular as it used to be. The ice just "rots away" to slush. We used to get huge chunks of ice thrown way up the river banks, with accompanying sound effects.

dori - hope your mother has settled down. At this point it probably doesn't take much to upset her. Your comment about maintaining the fragile family threads hit home. I largely don't any more. They (and I, in that context) are too fragile.

rainey -I read somewhere about an upcoming change. Know I am thinking of you. Stay strong - you are doing the right thing.

sharyn -I think they would find black sheep in mine too

cm -not all that bothered either....

send - flights of fantasy

becky, smeshque and all - take care

Thought I had a health issue as my shoulders were quite sore a couple of evenings ago. Then I remembered I had moved the fridge out to retrieve a couple of pens that had fallen down the crack between the fridge and the counter, and then cleaned the floor in that area. A couple of ibuprofen and a heating pad have done the trick.

Walking outside is good these days. Working on counting the good stuff.
