Talking about refrigeration, when I was a kid we didn't have a refrigerator, we had an ice box. The ice man periodically dropped off a chunk of ice on the back porch from his horse drawn cart loaded with ice blocks that had been stored in straw. We wiped the straw off, dad loaded it into the top of the ice box, and if you needed ice for your drink in the summer, you chipped it off the block with an ice pick. It worked!

Send, I meant but, didn't communicate it at all, that my propane system is manual defrost.

If I could, I would convert my home to propane. It is the best energy source I have ever used. Unfortunately, tis not going to happen.

ITRR,
I have been shopping for refrigerators and they do make propane refrigerators for the home. I think the propane tank has to sit outside though.

Having an RV is the solution for emergencies! Having it's own generator, refrigerator, toilet, just get in and drive away!

TNtechie,
Thanks for that. Good information!

Cwillie,
I had an oven long ago that was called 'continuous clean'. That meant to me it was continuously dirty. Then came the 'self cleaning' oven.

Yes, I know you were talking about freezers self-defrosting, but who is going to admit to being t h a t o l d ?

Have you heard that SCE (Southern California Edison) is going into a side business defrosting refrigerators to help out the economy - so people will have to buy new food?

Report

Cwillie, I think that our food would last longer if it was still manual defrost.

My RV has a propane freezer fridge and the ice cream never gets freezer burn or ice crystals.

Wish we had the option for home use.

Oops: just read TNts post, yep, totally agree.

Anybody else remember they days when refrigerators didn't have a self defrost feature?

Things deteriorate in the auto-defrost freezer because they thaw and refreeze every few days. If you want to keep things for years in the freezer get a manually defrosted one. Of course, the downside is you have to place everything in your fridge freezer or a good cooler once every year or two and "manually" defrost and clean the freezer.

Last night was frozen chicken breast with quinoa and brown rice. It was late, and I fell asleep just after eating. Was up at 3:30 a.m. to brush my teeth and get ready for bed for real.

Frozen items are not as good after a few months in the freezer.

I am seeking a satisfying meal, but I don't know what it is. Maybe it's lots of mac n' cheese, or a hot fudge sundae, but trying to eat better has me all confused.

Good plan, CWillie!
Glad to see that I am not the only one who wanted to stir fry a Kale salad.

And, I do need to visit that frozen pkg. of chicken breasts in the freezer, who knows how long that's been in there.

So many good ideas, just by checking in on what others have done.

I love German chocolate cake, chocolate and coconut are some of my favourite things! 🤤 I can't even remember when I last had some though, it's got to be decades ago.

I've got some cooked chicken from the freezer as the main and I picked up a last day of sale kale salad kit at half price, my plan is to stir fry the veggies and eat them with a package of chicken fried rice (I'll save the dressing and extras for another salad). I'm not sure whether I'll mix the two together or keep them separate, I'll decide once I eyeball how much of each I have.
Some almonds in the rice might be nice too.
Hmmm, maybe some raisins too? No, make that dried apricots!

Pam,

My grandmother used to pick crabs and make the best stuffed crabs. If I reached for a bite of the piled up crabmeat that she had picked, she would slap my hand and tell me ‘No!’ LOL

I don’t think I would have the discipline to never take a taste of the crabmeat like she did. Crabmeat is so delicious! There are lots of delicious recipes for crabmeat, crabmeat au gratin, stuffed crabs or crab cakes, crab dip, etc.

My hubs loves to pick crabs,, we get a bushel or a 1/2 bushel a few times every summer,, we eat them and then he/we pick them out over the next few days. I make crab dip and soup, and we freeze it. We used to have a "crab feed" every summer for his co workers and our friends,, everyone brought a side and it was alot of fun! Trying to plan a smaller version of that for this year.

I made2 loaves of chocolate zuchinni bread (probably for the freezer) and a pot of nice thick minestrone that I seasoned with Old Bay ( I had Maryland crab soup for lunch yesterday) and that gave me the idea. Hubs was a bit dismissive of the soup,, until he tasted it! Healthy and yummy!

I don't really follow recipes when I make muffins any more earlybird. I've found that you can decrease the fats and sugar by at least 1/3 and up to half in most recipes, especially ones with a lot of fruits (or veggies like carrots). I like to add in stuff like flax meal, wheat germ, bran or whole wheat flour in place of some of the all purpose flour too. A good sized gob of greek yogurt if I have some on hand can add a little extra protein. And I've never used more than 2 eggs in a muffin recipe, often just one. You might find you need to add a little extra moisture if you are using butter instead of oil but I've found that anything will do - milk, juice, even just water.
