Oh I am a lover of good old fashioned "lips and arseholes" dogs,, as John Candy used to say ( The Great Outdoors movie) The fancy all beef ones have too thick of a casing for me. Once in awhile I can find really large 1/4 lb dogs at Aldies.. they are fantastic on the grill. Our DD always brought alot of friends to the river house, and no one ever turned those down! Tonight hubs made stuffed peppers with salsa instead of pasta sauce,, we'll see how that goes? The peppers are from our garden. We are also overrun with cukes right now! We do also love us some Brats.. maybe like knockwurst? Grill them and put them in a beer bath to keep warm,, got that recipe from our friends from Wisconsin!

Yes! Only Hebrew National Knockwurst for me, thanks.

Hot dogs have become too thin!

What is the difference between a hot dog and knockwurst?
Knockwursts are soft and salty like a hot dog, usually a little thicker and perhaps more aggressively seasoned. The big difference is most knockwurst probably contain better ingredients than your pedestrian hot dog.

CW what is dreck? Gross?

I never understood the American love for hot dogs but then through reading I discovered that most people think the hot dogs we can get in Canada are dreck - maybe that's the explanation.

Hot dogs? Must get Hebrew National or Nathans. You will never get Ball Park or any other again!

And then there is biker jims dogs, must google. Ostrich, rattlesnake anyone?

Hello TN,
I didn't know you could freeze hot dogs. 100% beef hotdogs is not made from organ meats, right? Thank you very much for the information.

I think turkey hotdogs taste good, usually better than beef hotdogs, and certainly better than the usual mix of multiple meat product hotdogs. I might not be the best person of just what makes the better tasting hotdogs since I like chicken, turkey, salmon, and shrimp as well as beef and only slightly second to crab (my favorite meat). Tuna, trout, catfish taste pretty good too and I can stand deer, goat, and other game animals.

As far as being good for you, recent studies show pretty much all processed meat is bad for you, but I still eat some in limited quantities (moderation in all things). I think the turkey hotdogs are better for you because turkey has less fat and is easier to find the dogs that are not made from turkey organs (maybe because there's less organ meat available?) The younger children ask for hotdogs for snacks so I try to keep more healthy options in the freezer so I can thaw and serve them quickly. Like most hotdogs, the most important part is to make sure they are made of meat and not organ meat and various meat products.

I'm trying to get the kids hooked on popcorn shrimp or oven-grilled shrimp bakes since they seem to have fewer chemicals (even in the farm-raised varieties) than many chicken nuggets and sandwich meats. Walmart sells a bag of small shrimp for a good price that I can coat in butter and seasonings with potatoes and freeze for a quick bake later. I have started cooking pot roasts for sandwich meat and ground beef for tacos too.

I cook more of our food and particularly meats to have better control over the salt and fat content because of the high blood pressure and diabetes that runs in the family. I've been fairly successful in getting most of the kids to like veggies and fruits as well as fast food (they want a fruit cup for the side more often than the french fries). They seem to like broccoli well enough if you get them to eat it before they know they've not supposed to like it or get introduced to a lot of the overcooked stuff in school cafeterias.

TN,
How do the turkey hot dogs taste? Probably healthier than beef dogs, right?
Your turkey dogs sound so good. I must try them on the grill.
Thanks.

earlybird, I also enjoy hotdogs and usually consume at least a couple of turkey dogs a week with chilli, mustard, and sometimes cheddar cheese.

What’s for dinner?

Nothing!!

We each had a late lunch of Arby’s 9 piece chicken nuggets (there were 12 pieces in each container!). We followed that an hour later with German chocolate cake and a glass of milk.

Add chocolate to your chai tea.

Be sure that you even like chai tea.

I like cold drinks in the summer, and have enjoyed drinks with ginger.

I've been working on my chai recipe and I finally have something I think is palatable but I'm going to keep tweaking it -
Simmer chai tea bag for 5 minutes (I'm just using up what I already had),
add a regular tea bag and let steep for 4 minutes as recommended (because I think it tastes like they left the tea out of that chai mix),
then add milk and sugar to taste.
Like I said I'm still working on it and I'd like it a little stronger.

I have "schnippled" a mix of green and yellow beans (from the garden), carrot, broccoli, celery and onion and plan to roast them together in my counter top oven, I'm not sure what will round out the meal (fish maybe?). I've got some banana bran muffins in there now for a late lunch with coffee.

I made a fresh strawberry cake with whipped cream frosting. Delicious tasting. Put half in the freezer cut in squares.
Mom is enjoying her chef meals very much and I am enjoying less time in the kitchen pureeing foods mom is sick and she has such a nice variety with this service. Yay!

I picked up a couple of Lean Cuisines for days like today when I don't want to cook and there are no leftovers in the fridge. I used to think they weren't bad but OMG something awful has happened to them, even the extra veggies I always mix in couldn't save this meal 🤢

Erikka,

Now you’re talking! Oh, yeah!!! Love it!

I live in New Orleans. I have my favorite spots where I get this dish, especially for brunch.

You’re right, very decadent! Totally unhealthy but hey, you’re celebrating a birthday! I say everything in moderation. It’s no fun to be good all of the time, right? 😊

What’s for our dinner? My wife requested stuffed peppers today. Not being too imaginative, I’ll make mashed sweet potatoes and have green beans for sides. Maybe corn for a color variance? My wife likes a “complete” meal. I can be happy with one item. She was such a great cook over the years. I can follow a recipe and that’s about it. I don’t mind cooking. I do have to ask her once in a while how she did something.

Have a good Sunday everyone!

I grew up drinking tea but somewhere along the way I became a coffee addict and when I want a hot beverage tea just doesn't cut it any more. I've tried different blends. I've tried brewing it stronger but that just makes it bitter. I thought maybe chai would give me some of that depth that I'm missing but what I've tried so far isn't living up to that.

A friend drinks london fog often. She has it with an orange spice tea, then of course the steamed milk.
