Find Care & Housing
Decided to turn yellow cake mix I found into a Rum cake.It doesn't have to be just for Christmas I guess.
The only other "fingers" I know cwillie, are chicken fingers I saw at the grocery store. They look like real fingers too, just gross.

I always liked fingers of rutabaga (we just called them turnips) as part of a raw veggie tray, as long as it was a nice sweet and tender one.

Golden, I love my veggies but I don't think I could make one into a whole meal!

Love cruciferous veggies! I make a meal of yam too, or any of the squashes. I had an acorn squash for a meal the other day. I just nuke them - fast and easy.

I have turned the coolest basement bedroom window ledge into cold storage for fruits and veggies. Wish I had a root cellar.

lu - rutabaga are sometimes called turnips, but are larger and yellow,

LOL! Promiscuous turnips?!! 😁

Rutabagas are the result of some promiscuous turnips crossing with wild cabbages in the 1600s, and while they contain the genes of both veggies, they’re considered a part of the cruciferous family of vegetables (cousins include broccoli and Brussels sprouts) and pack similar health benefits.

I sometimes make a meal of a baked yam. Might have to try rutabaga.

Yeah Golden,I love to go out in the kitchen and see what I can concoct out of what I have on hand.It makes me feel good to make do with what I have and not have to go to the grocery store.
With the ice and snow here,I sure don't want to get out today,so I was thrilled to find some hamburger in the freezer and a yellow cake mix in the cupboard this morning. Now were all set for dinner and dessert tonight.
I don't know what a Rutabaga is,but it sounds like a Radish to me and I don't think I'd ever want a whole meal of that, but you go Golden.Your'e a healthy eater,I can tell.

lu - a cook after my own heart - dump stuff together and it is never quite the same the next time. If I want to do something new I look up a couple of recipes online then going into the kitchen and do a kind of combination according to what I have and what sounds good. It usually turns out well. When it is something like soup or stew there is the taste and adjust part until it tastes right Bet your meat loaf was great.
Maybe that's why I don't get much GERD. Too much sugar and I don't like it. Give me a raw carrot or a couple of squares of 70% chocolate instead.
Supper last night was a small rutabaga, some crackers and hummus. Every now and again I want to make a meal of rutabaga Weird I know! 😉

Lu- My DH loves hawaiian punch too. Never thought of slushes. But he quit buying it because mom was getting hooked on it too and too much sugar.

But it does have vitamin c, so that is the salad to counter act the canned ravioli. :) According to Send. :)

I love Hawaiian Punch slush's A LOT. So much so, I've gone through 2 great big jugs in 3-4 days. The problem with them though, is that they make GERD worse, so I have to call it quits.I love them but they hate my guts.

Send, it may not be that unhealthy but I've always felt it was very salty and it is out of a can so.....who knows. But its easy and quick so I turn to it when I'm feeling lazy.

Beef Stroganoff, using plain Greek Yoghurt instead of sour cream.
It is tart, and very thick.
On extra wide egg noodles......

Gershun,
Whenever I need to open a can of that, a salad later can reverse the side effects of the food that was not healthy. How unhealthy is it, cause I eat it often.

I finished the last of the chicken soup I've been eating for a few days.
And then I polished off all the nanaimo bars I'd stashed in the freezer... they weren't quite as good as I remembered, but I ate them anyway. I knew I should have tossed all that stuff 😔

I think meatloaf's are easy to make and they go a long way.You never need a recipe, you just eyeball it and dump and there's never any two that come out alike and the next day after having it for a dinner, you can make the best sandwiches.
It'll be good on this snowy night and very filling too. That's what I'm making~

I agree. It helps to talk about other things besides talking about our tales of woe. I need to find different ideas for what to make for dinner every night. Something fairly easy.

My FIL visited on Sunday and told me about a gift card he got for Xmas. It was $100 to a fancy restaurant. So, MIL and FIL went to the restaurant with another couple who also happened to have a $50 gift card to the same restaurant.

Their first clue was the fancy menu with no price. They ordered ordinary food like chicken and steak dinners with some wine. When they finished dining and wining, they got a bill for almost $400. Yikes!!!

I told FIL $400 is my monthly food budget.

We went to a restaurant that specializes in "pescado zarandado"-a white fish grilled with spicy butter with shrimps on top. Yum. It's one of my favorites. Then off to Costco to buy the 4 layer chocolate fudge cake I've been dreaming about since last year. Gosh it's rich and yummy! Gave half to hubs' family and took the other half home.
Guess I'll be eating most of it myself, as hubs (a non-diabetic) took his blood sugar (he just checks it for info) and it was 130 this morning. :0
Now, another year to diet and to cut carbs. :(

The problem with appetizers in a restaurant is they cost almost as much as the entree, it costs too much unless you have a bunch of friends splitting the cost.

CWillie,
Appetisers when eating out can make the whole meal, and allows a wide choice of favorites. I like to eat this way at a restaurant sometimes.

Bringing a friend and sharing gets even more choices.

We had fish tonight. My goal for 2019 is to have at least two fish meals a week. I just don't like making the whole kitchen smell fishy. But tonight, it's not too bad.

I bought a some frozen, pre-seasoned wild caught mahi mahi at Costco. Fish thawed and then baked in the oven. Came out OK, good enough, moist and flavorful. But I like the pre-seasoned salmon better, pan fried, but more fishy smell in the kitchen.

Homemade pizza with sourdough crust. Dh had pepperoni. I had cheese and peppers. Mom's choice of toppings was Bacon and Anasazi beans? She loved it. Weird combo, but she liked it.

I still dream if a brick oven. It's in the plans, but you know how that goes.
