No cheese?! That would be hard.🧀🍕
I think I could do gluten free though, there are some pretty good alternatives available and lets face it, 75% of the stuff we eat that has wheat in it is in the junk food category: cakes, crackers, cookies, pastry....🤤

I wonder why the gluten free bisquick didn't work for dumplings, I wouldn't have thought gluten would be all that essential 😕

Oops 😯 It's my fault!
But think how disappointed I was with these "paste balls".

I keep a couple of packages of sausage white gravy mix in the cupboard, also a package of turkey sausage in the freezer and either a package of (regular) Bisquick or a tube of biscuits in the frige, so when that "biscuits and gravy " moment hits...I can indulge.

I'm so glad I don't have Ciliac disease (intolerance to wheat and rye, or diabetes (I love anything sweet) and the two (wheat and sugar) just go together so well in so many forms (cake, cookies, sweet rolls, etc.)

I have a lactose intolerance that came out of nowhere--right at menopause. I drank 2 glasses of non-fat milk a day for 49 years then BAM! Bloating and "tooting" all over the place. (Sorry, TMI)

I guess if I had to give up one of the three, it would be milk. You can always have a cup of coffee with fake creamer along with your (wheat flour-sugar frosted) donut! 😋 🍩

Now we know who to blame, Sue and her dumpling talk. She's probably off in dreamland as we deal with hunger pains. :)
Hope you get some tomorrow. We can't have them anymore, because my Mom loves both dumplings and biscuits and gravy, only they make her sick if she eats them so we dont.

Your'e right smeshque,I could make them, but only I would eat them and dumplings and biscuits and gravy make up so much,so my only hope is getting them up the street at the diner every now and then.

polarbear- I usually eat my biggest meal at lunchtime. So dinner I am not so much hungry. Just have something so others will eat.
Not so skinny since caregiving been trying to rid myself of the 20lb mama weight, I have gained.
it is true dog food is more expensive, and less nutritious for them. We feed our dogs a lot of real food too. they love it more than dog food.

Becky, you feed your family good. I use to cook like that, but haven't had a chance in a while. I love cooking.
Lucky- My Mom always made gravy and biscuits and chicken and dumplings. Growing up I enjoyed now don't eat it. But you can make them now.

Drumsticks were on sale, so I bought 10 for $1.50, that's 15 cents a drumstick. I slow cooked them with some carrots for my little dog, since it's cheaper than buying dog food. My husband eyed the drumsticks and looked back at his dinner (tacos with all the fixings) and mumbled: " The dog gets to have drumstick, and I don't." Hahaha.

I'm very sad to report GLUTEN FREE Bisquick does NOT make dumplings. They substitute rice flour for wheat flour and it changed the whole thing.

Fortunately, I opened 2 cans of chicken broth instead of using hubby's soup. Soooooo glad I did because the aftermath looks like cream of wheat with little " lumps" in it.

I went to Bisquick.com. They had a recipe and I added an egg, milk and the Bisquick. I followed directions to a T and its a sad tasteless mess.

It didn't really matter because hubby adds 1/2 jar of ghost pepper sauce (hotter than the devil) to his and it could have been rotted for a month and no one would have known!

I'll look at the package more closely next time. This one's going in the trash. 😕

Sue, I use Bisquick for dumplings. Use the biscuit recipe like CW said. My only advise is use a teaspoon to drop on top of your soup. Using Bisquick they puff up a lot. Very light and puffy.

Dumplings are just drop biscuits cooked in broth (or whatever), so I'd use the box's recipe for biscuits with a little extra liquid added and go for it.

I worked today so hubs cooked a chicken vegetable soup. Ok, but I'm adding some dumplings.
Got the little Bisquick box at the dollar store (or 99 cents store) and just took it out. It's GLUTEN FREE!
Aaaahhhh.
What now? Can you make dumplings from gluten free dough? There's a recipe for biscuits, pancakes and waffles on the side of the box but nothing about dumplings. I don't want to ruin his soup. Phooey.
Any ideas?

Welcome to "Dinner" thread, TevinColorado. I used to waitress at a VFW 20+ years ago when I was a 20 yo or so. They would have a bingo night on Saturdays and I was the waitress. Everything was ordered up, like a diner, from a fairly basic menu but the food was very good! That cook working there taught me about steak. I learned to eat my steak a little more rare than well done from him, hahaha!  My two cents -- is to get out a bit while you still can with your hubs, expense or not. Plus, doesn't the money from the meals go to these places, so win-win.

I get so much yummy inspiration from this thread for meal ideas, but I'm pretty happy making the same old thing this week. I finally baked up my chicken thighs tonight in some seasoning and stock, added onions, garlic, fire roasted diced tomatoes, greens, mushrooms. It's a one-dish meal that keeps well and I enjoy it.

Had the garlic mac n cheese at work today, plus half a pub burger with all the trimmings.  It's good food and after some initial adjustment to working around the smell of a restaurant all the time, I'm enjoying eating there most days.  Some days I just have some soup because I don't feel like having a food coma in the middle of the day and I could spare the calories these days.  After changing clothing sizes up a couple of times during caregiving, I don't care to do it again.  Hah!

A lot of times we go out to the Eagles Lodge for supper. They have really good meals once a week. The other place we go is the VFW. They have meals another day and they are good. My DH has dementia in the very early stages. Sure it's an expense, but the meals are good.

I had whitefish with coleslaw and steak fries yesterday at a lovely waterside restaurant on my trip. First time I've had good whitefish in a while. Looking forward to getting back up there for a meal at my favorite whitefish place, which was closed yesterday (seasonal).

It's been a busy, but good, week for me. Thanks for asking about me and sorry I didn't respond right away, just getting back on the site now, Saturday night, and I bought those shrimp last Tuesday.

I ate a few of them even though they smelled "ripe" and had a slightly tangy taste, and I noticed the aftertaste. I ate a few anyway, threw the rest out, and never got so much as a tummy twinge, so all is well. They were GROSS more than anything, too stinky and the texture was mushy. I was disappointed and thought to go back to the grocer and ask for a fresh batch as a "refund" but who has time for that...? Not me, not this past week. I'd love a fresh batch, though, mmm. Note to self that next time I buy from the seafood department like that, I'll make sure they pass the smell test before I leave with them.

Tonight is first evening at home where I have some time to get to some chores and some cooking. I'm defrosting some chicken thighs (I do love them and they're so versatile and easy) to make in the skillet tomorrow but in the meantime for tonight I made a big batch of fresh guacamole with chopped cilantro, tomatoes, onion in it. It's very good and I'll have that for dinner with some other odds and ends. I cut up some fresh strawberries and boiled some eggs. It's good to be at home and be able to catch up on some things. I had plans tonight but after being out all day and eve since Wednesday, I cancelled my plans and stayed in to get the housework done. This guac is pretty yum, if I do say so myself! Hard to screw it up but mmmmm!!

Send, I like your frozen veggies tips for the larger size bags that you want to get down to single servings. I usually buy the small frozen bags or boxes and eat one as a meal, but that is a good way to make a side dish from a larger bag if I want to.

In my freezer.....a huge bag of mixed vegetables, including mushrooms from Costco.
Put some pieces in a paper cup, a tbs. of water, microwave 2-3 minutes.
Squeeze the cup closed to pour out the water. Eat from cup.

Variations: Put on a plate, add cheese, melt in microwave.

Stir fry in a pan while cooking a scrambled egg, cheese on top.

Put over a bowl of rice.

Very quick-don't have to go out.
