Tomato/vegetable/mushroom soup with some stew meat and rice.

A few months ago, I started getting leg cramps at night when I stretched my leg quickly. I figured my potassium was low, so I consciously started eating food high in potassium every day. Food like tomato, potato, banana, avocado, etc.. After a week, I didn't get any more leg cramps. I take multivitamin and fish oil, too.

I love good fish and chips with malt vinegar. I will have to search for a place around here. In Cali, I had no hesitations buying fresh fish. Here in Idaho, I’m much more cautious. Yes, when in doubt, throw it out.

Tonight we are having nopales salad (found a Mexican market here in town), refried beans on tostadas. Adding in cooked shrimp too.

Opened a packet of chicken to make Coconut Thai chicken last yesterday, and it smelt off, so out it went. I am with the "when in doubt, throw it out" crowd. I buy shrimp frozen too. It doesn't take long to thaw and cook in a little garlic and butter, with a squirt of lime. Yum!

Ali, are you OK?

Instead we went to "The Fish Place" and had fish and chips, mine just grilled, not battered and deep fried. They have a very good kitchen. The fish was excellent and the chips are home made. Nice for once in a while.

Last night time with my wife, no one home. 2 fillets with Bearnaise and topped with crab. Grilled and roasted Fingerling potatoes with butter and garlic and a salad. Not often we get to have dinner with just us, was a nice break. I would rather cook at home with her any night of the week rather than go out for dinner.

Dear Ali,

I love shrimp too and I normally by frozen. But when in doubt, I would throw it out. I know its hard but I rather be safe than sorry. I get too paranoid about food safety sometimes. My colleagues make fun of me for it.

I had some calm chowder tonight and Cajun chicken wings.

Ali, I never buy cooked shrimp in the deli. I always buy the frozen, freshness much more reality, and the way that shrimp are now flash frozen nearly every bit as good as fresh. Try frozen next time. I wouldn't eat those slimy shrimpers either.😵

Some of them were going in the direction of being slimy. They weren't firm anymore. They're definitely past freshness but probably not too bad. I never had that experience before, though. I buy cooked shrimp pretty frequently and never had some this questionable. But they aren't obviously spoiled, either. I did rinse well to start. Interesting factoid about animals' stomachs. Makes sense, how else could they eat from garbage and not get sick?

I think you're right, though, Polar, and everything's fine.  The bit of ammonia aftertaste spooked me, but it wasn't overwhelming, just a little taste.

Alibobali, if the smell is a bit fishy and the shrimps are still firm, then just wash with salt, then rinse with warm water a few times to get rid of the smell, then rinse one last time with some wine, then dry off. There should not be any problem.
If the shrimps are no longer firm but a bit slimy, then it's time to throw out. If you have animals, you can feed the shrimps to them. Animals have way better stomachs than ours and can even eat from garbage can and still be fine.

I'm experiencing the first time I can remember ever having an ammonia aftertaste in my mouth after eating shellfish. That isn't good, I know that. It's not a guaranteed thing that I will be sick but I'm considering how serious this can be. Probably will be fine although I think I might feel better about the whole thing if I got the shrimp back out before they do any damage.

This isn't how I saw my evening going. HMMMMMMM.  Sorry for the overshare and gross out stuff. I thought it was funny at first, that my shrimp seemed bad (just a little bad, though, and when smothered in horseradish cocktail sauce, I didn't smell a thing haha) and now I'm considering that this could be not all that funny.

This cheapie pound of cooked shrimp I bought at grocery tonight is a little too smelly. I should err on the side of caution and not eat it, throw it away. Being as I had a craving and I'm obstinate to the point of being foolish, I'm eating a few anyway. I hope this story doesn't have an unhappy ending.

I open at the restaurant tomorrow for first time, have to be there a bit earlier than usual and will be by myself for a bit. Maybe I could hunt down some shrimp there (we sometimes have some for specials, but not always, best as I can tell... I don't check stock in the freezers). I'm eyeing these shrimp I have tonight. Hmm.

Question: if I've already eaten 4 of them (they're small, 60ct/lb), is the damage already done if they are indeed bad? So it won't change anything now if I eat another 1/4 lb...? 😝

I'm being silly, making jokes. I have to throw them out, don't I...? Sigh. I'll find some decent shrimp tomorrow, these are not them.  Pewwy.

Cwillie,
Real french onion soup is almost impossible to find anywhere! I would have to comb through all the higher end french restaurants in the city to have a fighting chance. I will never forget the first time I had it, my father took me to a place in SF and it was wonderful, ooozing with cheese, bread........ *sighs* it is a great memory.

I've always rolled my eyes when they serve french onion soup at the NH, it's just onions in beef broth. Today sis and I went to a local restaurant and the soup of the day was french onion so sis decided to treat herself... and she got a bowl of onions in beef broth with a little pkt of 2 crackers on the side. What, no croutons, no cheese of any kind? Uh, is this a new trend?

Veronica and Sue - thank you for the tips on how to get marked down meat from markets. I'll call the market near me and ask.

As for squirrel, I heard there's a spray to deter them, a squirrel repellent spray. Thank goodness I don't have squirrel problem. But I do have possums and occasional raccoons that come to try kill my egg laying hens.

Squirrels may be edible, Countrymouse, but probably gamey and not much meat. I'd rather have the tail for decoration.

Polarbear,
Most large chain grocery stores (in southern San Diego anyway) have meat markdown areas.
Von's ticked me off about a year ago by "reducing the reduction" from 50% to 30%. Now I'm more picky because it's not such a great deal.

What you want to pay attention to is if the package has been on sale before it was marked down. THEN, the savings (with the sale price) coupled with the 30% is a great deal. Usually, the markdowns are at the end of the counter.

Occasionally I'll get a stalky bunch of broccoli in a frozen package. I try to buy brand name because it doesn't happen as much.
Some brands of jalepeños have a lot of onion and carrot tops that should have been cut off taking up space, also broken chilies and pieces of stems. Hubby is SO spoiled that he says he can "taste" the difference if I de-seed the jalepeños than if I bought them seeded already-sheesh!
Oh well, I don't mind. He does a lot of nice things for me. I put on gloves and do 2 cans at once.

I forgot that at least California has access to many Mexican veges. Unfortunately I guess the rest of the US might not.

I wish I could invite all of you down for a Tijuana taco-much different than Taco Bell. (Hey, I like Taco Bell too!) TJ is famous for their "street tacos". My favorite is 1 block down from us. The guy bbq's ribs then cuts the meat off for the taco and gives you the bone to gnaw on or take home to the dog.
Our of this world!

Preparation is the key to having a good meal. And planning.
I recall all the great Easter eggs we had last year.

Someone asked, "How is the diet going"
A n s w e r was "I had eggs this morning".
"OH, scrambled or hard boiled?
"No, Cadbury".

MsMadge will likely get her Easter Eggs at Sees, not Cadbury.
