IN N OUT!
There was a long line at in n out tonite.
You have heard they have free cocoa?
Asked the guy to explain whyyyyyy I could not have any.
Apparently, you must be 12, it says in the fine print.

The loooong line was all behind me, waiting to pay.
Asked hubs why the next window people were staring down here?
I was not done talking...o well.

No hot chocolate for me, it does not work even if you act like 12. Mwah ha ha!

Just had to say that I am in awe of all of you who are making delicious, nutritious meals. One of my major failures, as a caregiver and as a human being, is that I really hate cooking and I suck at it. When my daughter was home for college for break, three times I tried to bake cookies, and three times they turned out inedible. Fortunately my mother is very undemanding about meals.

If not for family, I'd live on fresh fruits and veggies, and convenience food, and nothing in between, and would use the oven for storage space.
To me, cooking should be a spectator sport!

Sue....I couldn't touch your "Mexican" Beef stew with a ten foot pole, but last night you served my favorite dinner ever and Mother made it and served it every year on my Birthday....Your Beef Stroganoff! Yum!!! Do you have any leftovers?

Report

Last night, beef stroganoff with noodles and broccoli.
Tonight "Mexican" beef stew (my own concoction) regular beef stew with Chili California peppers and chipotle chilies (seeded) with birote (a baguette). (Hubs will still add half a bottle of hot sauce, sigh.)

MsMadge,
Here in México, they have camoteros who sell steamed sweet potatoes and/or bananas. They have a little rolling cart with a fire under the oven. They roll around the neighborhoods at night, calling with a train whistle sound from the smoke stack. You can hear it a block away when they release the steam.
Pieces of skinless sweet potato (or banana) are served with La Lechera, Mexico's version of sweetened condensed milk. The Mexicans eat it as a dessert. Good deal for around $1.50.
I think you'd enjoy it! 😋

Same thing with tamaleros selling tamales. Often the flavor is good but there's not quite enough meat inside.
If you're ever over here in TJ, I recommend a tamal stand on Calle Tercera (Third St.) They steam theirs in banana leaf (my favorite) instead of dried corn husks. They have loads of meat and sauce in them. One makes a meal. Good deal at $1.75.

We should do lunch!
🌮 🌯 🍻 😋 🇲🇽

I'm getting creative with what's in the freezer and cupboard. Last night I went to cook some steak I took out, only to realize it was lamb shoulder chops. I sautéed the lamb in a skillet, it turned out well enough. I made some quinoa and brown rice. I made green beans and corn. If I REALLY wanted to, I could stretch out what I already have for a bit yet before doing any shopping but I'm already pining for fresh veggies and fruits. I'll go get food tomorrow after new PCP appointment. We're up to around 10º today, not bad. Might go up to near 30 by end of the week, so no record cold streak if that happens. Seems like we're on the way to ending the deep freeze.

Thanks Ali and Sunny! I thought my sinus infection was coming back,, but I may have dodged that bullet. Just lots of drainage and some stuffiness this round. This is a bad year for stuff, I can't tell you how many sick with sinus stuff folks I know!

Madge - Here's another one who loves sweet potatoes. I agree it is almost dessert. And sweet potato fries are the best.

Ali, I stay in at severe temps or take a cab if I HAVE to go out. Now I have that bug too

Dinner, lunch and breakfast - homemade chicken soup for me. Loving my electric pressure cooker which turns left over chicken carcasses into lovely bone broth. That and pb toast with marmalade is all I want.

Sunny, I hope I get past it sooner than you!

Pamz - turkey brunswick stew sounds yummy!

veronica - love a reuben but I can't have the bread or cheese :(

blackhole - the standbys! I like hamburger better than steak

That's unfortunate you don't like sweet potatoes. Baked with butter and a bit of brown sugar or maple syrup and it's almost a dessert - the Viking loves em

Posole is a Mexican soup with pork or chicken and hominy

MsMadge what is prosole? I hate sweet potatoes in any form. Given me an oven baked pate any time with lashings of butter and sour cream. Not on the cardiac diet i know but I eat so little I pretty much ignore that when it's something I fancy and can actually eat.
i will take the Reuben though.

I wasn't aware of the pork and sauerkraut tradition on New Years - maybe out west, we're more familiar with posole

I'm off to get my Reuben and sweet potato fries

I was just reading that Chicago is expecting a record setting cold streak in next 2 weeks. I'm going to need all of your easy soup, stew, chili recipes, please!! Mostly kidding but oh my... I don't know if I'm physically ready for this. 😳

I need to go to the grocery to fill up the frig, but it's 0ºF outside, -18 with wind chill. Canned soup is just fine if it saves me from having to venture out there into Frozen Land, plus I'm in a soup/stew mood with this cold weather. Just seems like insanity to me to do anything that involves going outside right now!

Pamz, turkey Brunswick stew sounds great!! Hope you feel better soon. 'Tis the season for colds, but also for great food to nurse yourself back to health with.

Just saw your post, Sunny.  Seems half of AC is sick lately, that stinks.  I'm a big fan of spicy soups when I have a cold.  Hope it clears up soon.

Leftovers tonight of pork loin, sweet potatoes, cabbage, and black eyed peas. Pam, I hope you are spared the cold that came my way. OMG. It's horrid. It grows in intensity. Today is day 7 for me and it's at its worst! Both of my parents had to see the doctor with it. I've tried hot chicken soup, but nothing really helps it. I think I might have coughed up a lung last night.

Went to a friend's house last night. As is usual for the last several years, we did a play reading (this year we did The Matchmaker, by Thorton Wilder). Mixed reviews from the other readers, but my Tirimisu was widely enjoyed.

Listened to funny story told by a long-time friend; when his eldest son was born, at a loss how to bathe the baby, the couple called his mom, who lived nearby. She ordered them to fill a bucket with warm water and dunked the week old babe under stating "they know instinctively how to hold their breaths at this age". My friend replied, "Ma, you're washing my son, not my socks" and took charge from there on in. Good times.

I didn't venture out for New Year's after all. I went to church, did a little shopping during the day and stayed home with a hot beverage in the evening.  TOO cold. Today, I'm cooking a pork loin, sweet potatoes, cabbage, apple pie and BLACK EYED PEAS and having some family and friends over. They are supposed to bring good luck for the New Year and are traditional here, in the south. IT'S 25 degrees here now!
