About the Owner: David Horwitz
After 35 years working in Higher Education Publishing, I decided it was time for a change—a new direction for the final stage of my career, one that would allow me to make a meaningful impact. That decision was deeply influenced by my own personal experiences caring for aging loved ones.

For the past six years, my sister and I have been caregivers for our family. It started with our mom, who was bedridden in the final years of her life. Shortly after she passed, our stepmother passed away, leaving our dad without support. As he struggled with dementia and required round-the-clock care, we were faced with the difficult decision of how to best support him.

Initially, we explored assisted living options, visiting 10 different facilities before selecting the one we felt would provide the best care. We took Dad to tour the community and have lunch there, hoping he'd feel comfortable with the idea. But at the end of the meal, he looked at us and said, " I don't want to live in a place like this...I want to live at home!"

That moment changed everything. We shifted our focus to finding in-home care that would allow Dad to remain in the place he loved.

My sister was living in Salt Lake City while I was in Dallas, and I was feeling guilty for leaving so much on my sister’s shoulders. We were incredibly fortunate that the wonderful caregiver who had cared for my mom in Arizona was willing to relocate to Salt Lake City and live in our dad's house to care for him. Even with that support, there was still much for my sister to do, and she still was not able to live her life because of the ongoing demands of caregiving. To ease this burden, we added a second part-time caregiver, ensuring his full-time caregiver could have 2 days off per week.

After these experiences, I found Hallmark Homecare, and I’m so happy I did! I am passionate about supporting aging adults, whether they need companionship or assistance with daily tasks due to physical or cognitive challenges. I also understand how overwhelming it can be for families to find the right care for their loved ones. Having been through this experience myself, I find great fulfillment in helping others navigate the same challenge my sister and I faced.
