My GF had her leg from the knee down because of diabetes in her early 60s. She was never able to use a prothesis and used a scooter for the rest of her life. Not sure I would want to do this kind of surgery on an 85 yr old. There is a lot of pain. My friend had to have a pain specialist to help her.

My daughter, RN, would never have recommended a feeding tube if it was going to be the only thing that was keeping a person alive, especially at your Dads age. I really think you need to consider Hospice. The tube will be removed if that is keeping him alive. He will be kept comfortable and pain free.

My cousin died with a peg tube on hospice. It would be inhumane to subject her to an operation just to remove it so she could die sooner. She was fed through it until the end.

Some of this depends on your definition of better health and expectations. Anyone with frail health is unlikely to adapt well to life post amputation. It’s a lot on a healthier, younger person. Is the feeding tube considered temporary for recovery or permanent? That’s another huge issue to adapt to. Please discuss this with the doctor and ask for realistic ideas on what to expect. I’m sorry you’re in this place

Frankly no. They have a feeding tube PLUS no foot. I doubt they ever walk again effectively.
