"Because it is highly active and plastic, the hippocampus is particularly vulnerable to injury, disease, and chronic stress. Conditions that affect this area include: [1]

Alzheimer's Disease: Damage to the hippocampus is often one of the first neurological signs, leading to early symptoms like short-term memory loss.
Trauma and Stroke: Head injuries or lack of oxygen (ischemia) can result in an impaired ability to form new memories."

"The hippocampus cannot "repair" itself by regrowing exact dead neurons, but it can adapt. Through neurogenesis (the creation of new neurons) and neuroplasticity (the brain's ability to rewire), the hippocampus can reorganize its connections and create new pathways to compensate for lost function."

Thank you . My wife suffered cardiac arrest on 1/8/2024 from a colonoscopy prep that stripped her of electrolytes and magnesium plus dehydrating her. Her heart went into defense mode and shut down. As a result her long term and short term memory have been permanently damaged. It’s a miracle she lived. She was in hospital 61 days. No heart damage resulted . She can still read and write but lacks independent motivation to do much of anything. She is only 66 yrs old.
