my father has dementia and has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer which has spread to his bones and soft tissue, we had concerns he wasnt coping at home and had arranged for a care needs assessment. this did not happen as he had a fall and was hospitalised, with severe dehydration and low sodium levels, the hospital have now said they are happy for him to be discharged, we feel a nursing home is the safest option but the social worker has said he does not qualify for a funded nursing home place and he can go home with carers. we feel it is unsafe due to his worsening physical condition, the medication he needs and his increasing levels of pain which require regular morphine top ups. social worker still say his needs can be met at home, and the only way he will meet criteria for funding is if the discharge home fails although they wont give details of what that means. Can anyone advise we have full power of attorney and really feel a nursing home would be best place for him, he does have a state and works pension approx £1300 per month so could contribute but has no other assets, can we refuse to let them discharge him home. we have meeting tomorrow so would be grateful if someone could advise asap sandra

Find Care & Housing
In the very least ask for a hospice consult and go from there.

Have they introduced the idea of hospice? Your dad needs to have 24/7 care, he is dieing and should be on hospice to mitigate his pain and suffering. In your country, do you have hospice houses or board and care homes?

He can not be left alone at this stage of things. I would be speaking to the hospital administrator about REALISTIC options available for his care.
