Often libraries will host information sessions that are conducted by attorneys that specialize in all things elderly.

Mary, there are a few ways, besides the good suggestions already given.

1.  Search on your state bar association's website for Elder Law attorneys.

2.  Contact your county and ask if they also have a bar association (many do), and if there are "practice areas".   If so ask for a list of attorneys in the elder law practice area.   Some speak on their field of practice, changes in relevant laws, etc.   Sometimes they speak at Bar Assn. meetings.

3.   Spend some time checking out law firm websites, learning how long the attorney has been in practice, and any other helpful information such as committees on which an attorney serves, special activities, anything that provides insight into the attorney's background and presentation.

4.   Some states compile so-called "best" attorneys in their field.   Some are top notch.   Check them out.

5.   Make a list of questions you want to ask, including billing rate basis:  lump sum or hourly.    If the latter ask what the hourly rate is.

6.   Then start calling attorneys for the lists you've compiled.

My personal preferences are attorneys who affiliate with related practice areas (i.e., probate, estate planning, probate litigation, etc.).  This gives them access to others in closely related fields, as well as backup if they become ill or there are schedule conflicts (such as Probate hearings).

Do you have any trusted professionals in your life? If yes, ask them for a referral.

When I was separated and knew we were heading to divorce, I asked all my friends and family to refer me to divorce attorneys. I asked them who represented each side and whether or not they were happy with their lawyer. When 3 different people recommended the same woman, I gave her a call.

One of the people recommending her told me she had represented their ex and was a much better lawyer than the one they had hired.

Mary, you can go to www.nelf.org and find a certified Elder Care attorney.

You need someone in your state, because regs differ by state.
