My MIL may come to stay with us if my FIL passes - and he is in hospice. MIL has mild to moderate dementia and as it progresses I would like to know if there are day programs ( and what experience is out there / opinions) available that would engage her and give her something more to do than sit and watch tv . I work from home so she would not be alone but I do not know best way to care for dementia and am interested to know how people keep there loved one engaged in life with others that are suffering same - but living at home instead of memory care places.

Find Care & Housing
There are Day Care Programs for people with dementia. Some also provide transportation.
Check with your local Senior Center and ask if they know of any in your area.
You can also contact the Alzheimer's Association and they would also have a list of any as well.
If there are none in your area often facilities that have Memory Care may offer Day Care options so give those a call. Often what they are hoping is that if your loved one goes there for day care when the times comes and you start thinking of looking for permanent placement for Memory Care you would choose that place.

I should have added that may Day Care Programs and many if not all Memory Care facilities have suspended their Day Care Programs at this time.
You might want to look at contacting an agency and get a caregiver a few days a week. They can follow proper protocol for safety.
