When we tried to re-instate it, the insurance co. said no. Can they do that? payment was on draft went unnoticed that it was not being paid for three months, insurance company said they don't issue to people with dementia, and asked if I had a POA, which I do. They were to send a new reinstatement application and I was to return it with the POA, but then they only sent a letter that denied him coverage...ugh! What to do?

I had this happen also about a year ago. The company sent the application and then denied coverage. I also have POA for my Dad. I asked a group of friends who were retired, and ended up call AARP United Healthcare. They were amazing and I was able to get my Dad coverage over the phone! Although we did have to wait a few months to have it effective due to enrollment being in October. (Thank you, Obamacare.) It is a supplemental and fairly costly, so I will be working with them on an Advantage type of program in October for less money. If they don't help me, I'll go for a Premera Advantage, which I am using since retiring last Fall. I felt as in the dark and you do now. Was glad to have friends to go to with my desperation.

Medigap is guaranteed to be renewed unless you stop paying. So now you wait for open enrollment in November and pick a different plan. At least you still have Medicare.

You should thank Obamacare....without it you would have been refused outright because of pre-existing condition!!!!

Isn't open enrollment in October? I think my answer above wasn't necessarily based on full understanding of the process, but that it did work out in the end. And yes, true that my Dad had Medicare, just not the supplemental. Fortunate!
