My mom has Parkinsons and fell and broke her wrist 5 weeks ago. She was instructed by her Dr not to use that arm until the brace comes off (which is this Friday)
The nursing home says the insurance will no longer cover short term care because she isnt rehabbing fast enough. (How can she without use of her dominant arm?)
Now they want to release her home too early (which they clearly stated she wasn't rehabbed) or they want to transfer her to long term care and take guardianship.

This dont seem right. Please tell me theres something I can do, I have to go back and talk to them tomorrow

Is the wrist the only issue at hand? I've never heard of staying in a rehab facility for rehab on a wrist, but, I suppose it happens. I'm not familiar with your situation, but, I hope you'll get some responses.

It sounds like there is more going on with her Parkinson's if they want to take Guardianship and place her in a nursing home.

Insurance will stop paying for rehab when she stops progressing, stays at a plateau. Is there some condition at home that she has to be able to do? My stepdad was kept longer because he had to be able to climb a few steps. He could not climb one without considerable instability.

An occupational therapist should, by Medicare rules, come to the home to assess the safety of it for the patient. The OT could then assess whether the patient is physically ready to return.

Be that as it may, if mom is not physically ready to return home and she is not progressing, then self pay or Medicaid funded long term care is the remaining option.

Why was your mother in rehab? I suppose it wasn't for the wrist, since she couldn't move her wrist. Was she in rehab for something else when she broke her wrist? How long was she in rehab? I have the feeling we're not getting the full story here.

It was for the wrist. She went to rehab because she can't do anything for herself without her dominate hand.

And now she's not rehabbing fast enough when the brace don't cine off til tomorrow. It doesn't mAke sense...
