My 93 year old blind, confined to a wheelchair mother is in an assisted living facility that costs $4750 a month and her income with VA benefits and social security combined is $4300 a month. Since moving her up here to Colorado from Florida last year because my sister passed away it has been very rough for me. The cost of living here in Colorado is much more expensive than Florida so I decided to see if the VA had more resources on top of the aid and attendance that she receives and now the VA is proposing to take away her pension. I am in the middle of fighting it with more required documentation they wanted and now waiting for an answer. I feel the worst is yet to come because if they take away her pension she would definitely become homeless and feel this is absurd. The VA also said why not apply for Medicaid and have her care completely covered but I’m not sure she would even qualify with her SSI income if $2675 with no assets. Why is the VA doing this? I’m terrified she will be homeless and her care costs are running about $5000 a month. What do I do? Can she get help through a blind elderly disabled waver? Is there any hope? I cannot have her homeless and even if they were to let her keep her VA pension it’s still not enough for her care and I’m on disability and unable to help her. I’m scared and cannot believe there isn’t any help to keep her where she is at and getting the 24/7 care she so desperately needs. We have done nothing wrong with the VA rules except move her. Scared… A loving daughter
I would see an Elder Law Attorney for options and discussion of her assets and choices.
