She has an ostomy bag, can’t walk and has moderate dementia. She has become very withdrawn and wants to die. I understand her feelings but don’t know how to help her. She says she has no life and hates everyone.

Her doctor may be able to prescribe meds for her.

She can get hospice while in AL. It sounds like it is time to do so.

Hospice.
You can't help her. You can sit with her, listen to her, and empathize. Her life sucks now and there's nothing you or anyone can do about it.
Hospice will not hasten her death, but they will provide strong medications to keep her comfortable, physically and mentally.

I guess I'd want to die too if I was 96 and had a ostomy bag, couldn't walk and had dementia. I mean who can balme her.
Perhaps it's time to bring hospice on board, so she can at least die as comfortable and pain free as possible. That will be a great way to help her.

Speak to her doctor about antidepressants. If those don't help, het a hospice evaluation for her.

Best of luck to you.

Sh's lived a long life at 96, can't walk, has dementia, and from what you're saying here has multiple health problems. She is right. She has no kind of life and has probably been ready to go for a long time. I wouldn't put her on anti-depressants at her age. If she's withdrawn and not being social anymore, that's okay. Visit her. Maybe bring her something she likes to eat if she can still enjoy that part of life. Let her complain and hate everyone, just be there for her.

Talk with her doctor about antidepressants. Even a low dose might make a big difference.
