If he is getting abusive now then eventually you will get seriously injured and he will be placed in a home or a geriatric psych hospital until the doctors can adequately medicate him. Don't wait till you get hurt. Unfortunately, for most these outcomes are usually the same. It's just a matter of time. No need to get yourself hurt for something that you have no control over.

That is how my cousin died by her husband. Seek out a local shelter or call 911 and do exactly what Geaton wrote

I'm so sorry that you're in this very distressing situation.

The very next time he threatens you (even just verbally), hits you, blocks you from leaving, or you believe you're in immediate danger, call 911 immediately and get yourself somewhere safe. Abuse by a spouse in later life is still domestic violence; age, illness, dementia or disability doesn't make your safety less important.

You do not need to tell the police or responders that he has dementia but make sure they know he cannot return to your residence. If he ends up hospitalized, tell the social worker/discharge planner immediately and unequivocally that you cannot safely provide his care at home -- he is an "unsafe discharge". Do not agree to a discharge plan that depends upon you providing care you cannot perform and are not willing to perform. Do not retrieve him from the hospital or jail no matter how much they hound you, if they do. Sometimes they do.
