I'm looking into transportation, activities, home maintenance.

I would call center for the aging in your county first. They will give you good ideas of what's out there in your area.

Senior Services, Area Agency on Aging and if you're fortunate enough to have a Shepherds Center, they will all be able to provide you with what all is available in your area.

I agree you should call a local Senior Center, churches, and local Area Agency on Aging. Go on to Nextdoor.com to see if you can get volunteers to do your home maintenance. Also look over Care.com for other caregiving and services like house keeping. Consider contacting your county's social services to see if you qualify for any in-home care, like light housekeeping, food prep and hygiene. Sign up for InstaCart or your local grocer's home delivery options.

Eventually you will require "too much" help to safely remain alone in your home... what is your plan for that time?

I see from your profile that you and hubby, both in your 70s, live in Virginia Beach and have three daughters and grandkids living there as well. You think now to downsize, perhaps selling a large home, and are beginning on working on de-cluttering. Congrats on starting a project you know you need to think on now, and for trying to start with the de-clutter. Getting rid of "STUFF" to my mind helps you to get rid of mess in the head as well. You begin to think better and breathe better.

I would begin with paper work. Get it done. Be certain you have a simple will, and advance directives as well as POA done. Continue with that downsizing and enlist the help of your kids. Consider where you might wish to live when your home is sold, and begin taking trips. If you are relatively well both physically and mentally you will have more options. Get in touch with your local council on aging. They can give you so much guidance.

Don't try to do it all at once, but make a plan. Discuss things with family. Wishing you the best of luck.

Monieestes, welcome to the forum :) Good to see you are trying to de-clutter. I am around your age and trying to do the same thing. I need to start getting back to doing that. Both my home office, and that of hubby's office, looks like the filing cabinets threw up :P

https://parks.virginiabeach.gov/rec-centers/seniors , check it out, it would be a store-house of information. Hope it is near-by.

As for home maintenance, I assume finding a good trusting handyman. Again, that senior center, other seniors can steer you in the right direction.
