My mom has had a few joint-replacement procedures. For the first one (maybe her knee), we were told she could recuperate and do rehab at home. This care plan lasted all of about three hours. My three siblings (bigger and stronger than me) were at her home, and they couldn't transfer her from the couch to a chair or a walker without her being in pain. Then the IV or whatever was being used to provide pain-relief medication came out. My siblings took her back to the hospital, she was admitted, she spent a few days there, and we were able to get her into a local continuing-care retirement community that had a rehab floor. For the second joint-replacement surgery, we said from the get-go, rehab must be in a facility.

After my dad's surgery I had to live with him for a while so he could recover. He got better enough that I and my husband moved into an apartment and I was his daily sitter for a while. Mom would drop him off on her way to work each weekday. The hardest part for me I think was convincing him of his limitations. As he improved, he thought he could still drive anywhere without telling us and would just leave home. Thankfully at one store a cashier recognized he was having a heart attack and called 911, saving his life.

That’s such an important point about convincing loved ones of their limitations during recovery. Many caregivers say that can be one of the hardest parts after bringing someone home from the hospital. It’s a big adjustment for everyone involved, especially when someone feels ready to return to normal activities too quickly.

Stories like yours really remind caregivers how important it is to monitor recovery closely and have support during that transition.
